Installing a wireless router, need some help pleae.

Post by dbt1949 »

I have a regular router(Linlsys) with the ethernet cables already hooked up to all my computers and everything is fine there.
Now I'm getting ready to install a wireless router for my laptop only.(Netgear)
On the cabled router there's a port(#1) that is for either normal or Uplink.(which it says is for use with a hub or switch)Is this the port I need to hook up the wire router to or will any of them do?

Thanks!

Any of them will probably do. Is the wireless a router or access point? Because if you already have a router an access point would be easier than a wireless router.

If it is a router you may end up with a double NAT issue because the first router NATs the adress and then the second does as well. This often makes certain things (like hotmail) not function behind the last router.

The wireless one is a router also.
Thanks for the help!

Be sure to turn off the router functions on the router. You'd really be better off with an access point.

Can you just replace the your current router? The wireless router should have 4 ports to plug in ethernet cable.

Well guys,I installed it without a hitch. The only problem I had was figuring out my administrative name and password as I have never used it before.Later on in the directions it tells to use the default but I didn't read that far down for awhile.
Anyrate it all works fine. All my online passwords seem to work okay too.

And Beer Goggles you may very well be right but it's all working now the way it is so why mess with it?

You are no fun. Messing with working things to make them 'better' is tons o' fun.
