What's up with XP Media Center Edition? Should I avoid it?

From what I've heard, yes. Get XP and media portal if you want the shiny media front end.

I've also heard it's bloatware from a lot of folks. But on the other hand the newest version is supposed to be quite an improvement and there are whole fan sites on the net dedicated to media edition so someone out there must love it. And for your Mom and grandpa crowd it can be nice to have everything simplified on the front end. Here is a favorable review just to get another opinion. Most likely if you are technically savvy you can get a better solution elsewhere, but if you want the convenience of insta-setup Media Center might be for you.

I beta-tested the original version before release and I never had a problem with it. To me it always felt exactly like regular XP, except for the obvious media features and the ability to control it with a remote. And if I recall correctly, all of the media features could be turned off if/when you wanted to use it as a non-media device.

I had the same apprehensions as you. But my wife is using MC 2005, and everything seems fine. I uninstalled all the nonsense that Gateway loaded and left the OS. Runs great.

NOTE: We don't actually use any of the MC "features" though.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range
