Murder at Midnight

Post by IceBear »

It's early Tuesday morning, Nov 1st, 1938, and Rex Holden slumbers facedown on his desk with an empty bottle of cheap bourbon nearby. Suddenly the private eye is startled away by a knock at the door and a sultry woman's voice speaks, "Mr Holden, are you in? Something dreadful has happened and I need your help."

What does Rex do?

Rex makes sure he has his .45 tucked away in his shoulder holster, takes a quick slug from the bottle and goes to the door.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

Rex opens the door a crack, standing by the wall.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

Rex sighs and says, "Sweetheart, that was just a radio program. There ain't no martians."
" Hey OP, listen to my advice alright." -Tha General

He sees the beautiful young lady standing there in her tight evening dress, which doesn't leave much to hide. He feels a stirring in his loins, it has been so long. He opens the door to let her in.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

She frowns at Rex's behaviour and haughtily speaks "Mr Holden, I was under the impression that you were a serious private investigator, am I wrong? What's with your unmanly behaviour? Certainly if I were an assassin come to kill you the Rex Holden I've heard of would have faced such dangers head on and not hiding like a frightened woman. I'm no longer certain I wish to hire you after seeing such craven manners from you."

Amazed at her beauty Rex holster the .45 and opens the door fully to get a look at the dame and says, " My apologies, Ma'am. I was napping and was startled. Not everyday a beautiful women comes knocking on my door. Will you please come in so we discuss why you need to see me?"

Open the door fully and stands aside so she can come in...

"That's alright, lady. Do you need a phone book to find another dic? If you make a call, leave a nickel by the phone." Rex then goes to back to sit at his chair with the intention of continuing his rest, this time in a more respectable fashion. His feet are propped up on his desk, his chair leaned back and his hat pulled down over his eyes.

Dazzling Rex with her smile - at once both full of innocence and seduction - she pushes the phone book back. "That's fine Mr Holden, I'm sure you'll satisfy. I apologize for my haughtiness, but tragedy has struck. My father, Earl Robinson, is missing."

Rex searches his foggy mind until the name comes back to him - Earl Robinson, a multi-millionaire who made is fortune in shipping and fishing. This would make the dazzling young woman in his office Veronica Robinson, Earl's only surviving family.

"My father," she continues, "has been obsessed with the occult since Mother's and Freddy's death." (You recall hearing about a deadly fire on the Robinson's estates a few years ago in which Earl's wife and son were killed).

"Last night, like he does every Halloween, my father had some of his spooky friends come over for a seance. I was up in my room, sleeping, when there came a bloodchilling scream. I quickly dressed and ran downstairs but I couldn't find anyone about - my father, the servants, his friends - all were missing. The room in which they held the seance was in ruins, the table and chairs were all tossed about like there was a great struggle and the window was smashed. I believe my father was kidnapped by his so-called friends. I wish to hire your services to find him. Will you take this job?"

I'm yer man, Miss Robinson.

The window was smashed, you say? Were the shards in the room or outside?
Where does that window lead?
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

The glass was inside the room. The window looks upon the garden that Daddy had planted when Mother and Freddy died. It has a nice clifftop view of the harbour and he would spend hours looking out that window.
Spoiler:
Did she notice where the glass was? - Average chance=50%. Rolled 16%

I think we're going to have to head to the scene of the potential crime. On the way, you can fill me in on the guest list and employee roster.
