New Game Framework Idea (just discussion)

Post by Austin »

I'm not looking at starting a new game right now. There is a solid line of those who wish to run one soon. I had a thought and wanted to put it down though.

This is just a basic framework/concept. Tweaks and powers would be added for flavor and rebalanced.

Number of players - 11 - 17

1 Villain
The rest are villagers.

Each night the villain tags 1 villager as evil.
- That villager knows he now plays for evil and wins with evil
- That villager does NOT know who tagged him

Each night the Villain tags a player until there are more evil players than good. Lynches during the day are majority based. Village wins by killing the original villain.

That's an intriguing ruleset, Austin.

The only problem I see is that it almost requires the goodguys to achieve an early knockout win. If the badguys get two or three turns in with their full team, the game would seem to overwhelmingly favor them.

They only have to kill the original villain before he achieves a majority. The other villains won't know who to avoid as they won't know him, nor each other. Interesting quarterbacking role the original villain would have. Try to send a message to those who are contacted about who he is, or who others are? Just try to survive?

Almost sounds like the "Thing" game. Interesting twist though. I wonder if we can get Kraegor to play?

I never played the Thing game, nor have I read it. I only know it in reputation of being... painful?

Thats about right. Everyday is basically like the first day since anyone can change at any time. Not so much fun IMO.

I read it...it was painful to read. Pretty much just looked like guessing. The difference there was there were two lynches. If, on the second lynch, they found a Bad Guy, they could keep guessing until they missed. If they found a Bad Guy first, but missed second, Day was over. Also, the Things had to play for the Bad side as soon as they were converted, but didn't learn who was on their team until the following night.

Maybe the fact that your Bad Guys never know who is on their team will make this different.

Also, I don't think the Good Guys had any powers in the Thing. Maybe that would make the difference here.

I'm certainly not married to this ruleset. Just some thoughts I I thought might be molded into something. ;)

heh. I can tolerate the "1" shifting player concept. A constant stream of shifting allegiance.... the game loses it's sense of detective work and simply enters full fledged stab in the dark paranoia. It's amusing that the Thing game was almost a win despite that fact.

The idea of simply killing the "original" may work.

This format obviously would end much more quickly than the Thing simply due to attrition.

village essentially loses 2 a day.

presume 18 players. 5 days. 6 nights. 5 misses. start at night...
6 bad guys. 7 good guys. 5 dead.

miss. game over.

the larger problem was the lack of penalty for a scan miss during the day. it dragged the game out. From a balance perspective, it made sense to have no penalty... but from a game movement perspective... time stood still....

In the thing game did the evil players know each other? In this one everyone remains blind and only the original vampire or whatever needs to be slain. You'd be watching for someone who is avoiding certain people as the day moves on... or something. Anyway, glad I posted this as I had forgotten it. :P

The chief issue with this ruleset -- a problem if it's not to one's taste -- is that it overemphasizes randomness or luck and underemphasizes skill. There's nothing to latch onto.
