War Of The Roses-Remus not executed on Friday...
I guess we'll give this a try, and hope that the mix of Diplomacy and WW-game paranoia is different enough to not detract from the main WW games running. My idea is to open for signups and rule discussion now, but to hold off at least a week on starting the game. The WoT game that's going now is worth everyone's concentration while we get comfy with how the rules and roles of that game work; once we get to "Wednesday" or "Thursday" of that game, perhaps this one can start.

Re: War Of The Roses--Signups open, game starts in August.
EDIT: Re-read the rules! Changes made on Monday, September 22!
Read the rules. I've made some significant changes to the rules I was discussing in the other thread even now.
Backstory:
The King of Britannia and his Queen and two sons (and only heirs) were summering at the Seaside Palace, when the ground beneath the foundation of the cliffside dwelling gave way and the keep fell into the sea, killing all members of the royal family and leaving Britannia leaderless. Two great noble houses--The Yorks and The Lancasters--each claim the throne for themselves. These two houses arrive at the Great Palace to determine who was behind the treachery that killed the old king, and to decide who will become the new king.
The blame for the treason and deceit that killed the king and his family can be laid upon the heads of all 13 members of both houses. Gold from these 14 nobles filled the pockets of the devious killers who tunnelled under the foundation of the Seaside Palace. All 13 nobles could be found guilty of treason and regicide; if one true king is chosen, he will name his court from his house and then certainly condemn the remaining nobles to their deaths to consolidate his own power.
The rules:
1. Each game day is divided into two turns, a day and a night turn. The first turn of the game begins with a special turn, called the Morning Turn. During the Morning turn, both teams may post in special forums for their teams to set day one strategies; after this abbreviated time period, the game proceeds to the first Day turn. During the day turn, the living nobles gather--in accordance with the Carta Britannia--in the Main Court to debate who among them is guilty of treason and thus should be executed. They cast public votes for those who should be condemned...
2. Each day ends when a majority of votes is placed upon a single player, who is led to the execution block by Captain Crane of the Royal Guards, the only law of the land and the regent caretakers of Britannia until a new King is chosen. The majority is a simple majority based upon remaining players in the game. If 11 players remain, the majority is 6. If 8 remain, the majority is 5. This "required number of votes to execute" is not dependent on undervotes or votes caused by writs of The Church. (See below)
3. The Night Turn follows each execution. During the night, both houses may post amongst themselves in their private "House Forums" until all night orders are received and resolved, plus 6 hours real time.
3a. If all living players of both houses post "Asleep until morning" in their forum, the referee will automatically advance the game to the day turn at his earliest availability. Players may continue to post in the House Forum if they like, but the House forum closes when the day turn (and any nighttime deaths) are announced here.
3b. Players are welcome to post ephemera in the regular thread here during the night, but should refrain from posting anything game-related.
4. The game ends when all players of one House have been eliminated.
5. Only the top three players by succession in the winning house win! The first in line is crowned King, the second is made Regent of Hibernian Lands, the third becomes Archbishop of Britannia. All remaining players are executed for treason.
Roles/order of succession:
1. The first Noble has the Power Of Protection--he or she may protect AT NIGHT any player on either team once per game, and may protect himself twice per game. Self-protect may not be consecutive, he must protect someone every turn. He May give up all his night protections ONE TIME ONLY to protect himself from voted execution. Doing so gives him immunity for that day and that following night from death, but after that he loses all protective powers completely. In the event he prevents his own execution, players will be told that "Captain Crane was unable to carry out the execution". If he elects to use his daytime power, he must express that by PM before a majority is reached.
2. The second in line for succession is Wise.--He may see the role/succession rank of any player on any team. ONE TIME power to see the roles/succession of everyone on his own team, at the cost of losing his "seer" ability for the remainder of the game, and at the cost of all members of his team learning his role and order in succession.
3. The third in line is The Learned--On the first night may determine the role of any slain or executed player. On every following night, he may determine the role of any *two* slain or executed players. The Learned may choose the ONE TIME power of vivisection on a live player by killing a player at night. If he does this, he will no longer be able to use his "coroner" skill the remainder of the game. This use may be blocked by protection, and all consequences of a block of the Ambitious player's assassins will apply. (See below).
4. The fourth in line is The Hammer Of The Church.--Has one secret "undervote" which he may voluntarily place on any player in the game. ONE TIME ONLY power to protect himself during the day from execution that gives him immunity from death the following night as well. Using this power eliminates the ability to cast undervotes for the remainder of the game, rendering the Hammer unpowered going forward.
5. The fifth in line is Ambitious--This player has brought his assassins to court in secret. During every night turn, The Ambitious may kill any player on either team each night. If The Ambitious attacks a protected player, his role is revealed to both houses of players and his attack is unsuccessful. He is subject to church condemnation--the Church places two automatic votes against The Ambitious for execution, thereby reducing the number of player votes to execute him. These votes are in addition to the votes of Player 3, The Church's Arm. Anyone caught in an assassination or Vivisection attempt is subject to this Papal writ on the day turn following the night they were caught in the act. After that, the writ is lifted. The Ambitious may use his assassins to protect himself in any given night turn, in which case he may not assassinate anyone during the night. If he is attacked while self-protected, the same penalties against the attacker are invoked. The Ambitious may protect himself consecutively, and may do so as often as he likes.
6. The sixth in line is The Betrayer--The two players at rank 6 for each house may PM with one another freely throughout all turns in the game. They will be given a separate forum for communication. In the event one of the Betrayers is assassinated or executed, any surviving Betrayer is given an automatic nightly protection from assassination and vivisection for the next two night turns. If his protection blocks such an attack, the results will be the same as any other protection regarding the attacking player.
7. The seventh in line is The Bastard--Whispers have abounded for years that this member of House Lancaster is actually the King's true and rightful heir. Player 7 can at any time in the game claim the number one spot in the line of succession for the throne of his respective house. This usurpation will be announced to every player in-game, so The Bastard is well-advised to keeping quiet as long as possible about his status. If The Bastard announces during the day turn, he is immune from attack that night. If he announces at night, he is NOT immune from execution the following day.
All players have one additional "power": each noble has their own squire whom they may use ONE TIME ONLY in the game to secretly change their public vote. The player will notify the referee by PM that he is changing his vote. This will "lock" the players vote on that person, although they are free to cast cosmetic public votes that will be ignored in the final tally to determine majority.
No contingency voting in any secret votes, by the Hammer or by nobles using their one-time power. ("Put my secret vote on Bubba if he gets to 6 votes!" is not allowed.) Votes of this manner must be made via PM, and must be specific and not situational.
Order of resolution for Night Turns; night turn orders will be resolved in the following order:
1. The Protected Protects. If The Ambitious chooses to self-protect, he may PM that order as well, and it takes effect from the start of the night.
2. The Wise Sees. (result given)
3. The Learned learns. (result given)
4. The Hammer Of The Church really hopes he lives through the night, since he has no night powers.
5. The Ambitious may send his assassins to do his bidding if he chooses. Simultaneously, if The Learned elects to forsake his regular power and perform a vivisection, that is resolved alongside the actions of the Ambitious. (Result NOT given until the start of the Day Turn)
6. The Betrayers really hope they live through the night, since neither has a night power. They may use their Betrayer forums in addition to their House forum.
7. The Bastard hopes to survive the night. He may invoke his right of succession power.
8. Throughout the night, players may post in a private House Forum while the night turn actions are resolved.
Order of resolution for Day Turns; Day turn orders will be resolved in the following order:
1. All public voting and discussion takes place in real time.
2. Any noble using their one-time power to change their public vote permanently for that day turn may do so in real time at any time. The referee will use time stamps to determine vote validity if no immediate confirmation is sent.
3. The Hammer Of The Church may cast his undervotes at his leisure. The most recent PM with a vote is considered the valid vote.
4. If The Hammer or The Protected elect to use their one-time power, they may do so in real-time or with the "T-1" conditions, as specified in the thread below.
5. The Betrayers may talk on their private forum throughout Day and Night Turns.
6. The Bastard hopes to live through the evening. He may invoke his right of succession power.
Read the rules. I've made some significant changes to the rules I was discussing in the other thread even now.

Re: War Of The Roses--Signups open, game starts in August.
Preliminary rulechanges thoughts:
1. I'm very seriously considering making it only the top *2* players in any given house get the win, instead of 3. The game has the potential to be over very quickly otherwise.
2. I think The Bastard needs a better power.
3. I'm thinking it would be kosher to open up the two House forums for interested viewers, but they'll need to PM me for the URL and registration.

I'll say in, I cant imagine a time being able to kill your fellow man is a bad thing.
Some claim to be things they aren't.
Some claim things they don't deserve.
Some claim to know more than they ever will.
I don't claim anything, because no one would believe the truth anyways.

I could also join.
Possible suggestion about teh bastard:
Perhaps make it so that only people from your house or only the upper people will know?
Also about the betrayers: As the ranks can change, does that mean that they still get to talk, or will the 6th person always be the one who can talk?

He is back online but has a hell work schedule this weekend (through Monday) to the best of my knowledge so I would not expect to see him much before Tuesday....not that I expect this to start before then anyway.stessier wrote:I would suggest tyring to confirm Chaos has net access again.

I needed blackmail material... Instead I'm gonna sell it on the internet.... I have never seen such creative use of Hallogen Lamps and Canola oil in my life... And that midget donkey... sheer brilliance.

I work in theater. In Los Angeles. That kind of thing isn't so much blackmail material. More like career boosting. Also helpful for picking up chicks.
Thanks a million, man!

Re: War Of The Roses--Signups open, game starts in August.
Sorry for missing the resurged interest in the game. Between a busy weekend at work and trying to keep up with a little Warhammer time, I missed this.
A few significant changes:
1. Unbalanced teams: I kept coming back to one particular problem that bothered me--a deadlocked vote in the early game. I felt as if there needed to be some impetus in the first turn to move the game forward. If the two teams were balanced, I felt as if neither team would move aggressively to stir things up and betray their own "team" and we'd sit forever with evenly-balanced votes. With an unbalanced teams, I felt that it added a sense of urgency to the Yorks (the six-man team) as well as the un-inherited Lancasters.
Thoughts on this? Does it work for you folks?
2. There's a lot of death potential here. With two Ambitious players early on, plus an execution...we could quite easily lose three players a day for the first day or even two. Perhaps some sort of "institutional" protection that either dissuades the Ambitious from using their assassins, or perhaps a passive protection that protects other role-holders in the game but doesn't give away the guiding hand of the assassins is worth putting in?
3. Giving serious thought to making it so only 2 players on the winning team are the actual winners of the game. Thoughts?
Like to send out roles on Tuesday night, Morning Turn of Sunday to take place from then until Wednesday afternoon.

Re: War Of The Roses--Game Starting Tuesday Night!
Is this susposed to be the The Hammer Of The Church (see in red)?5.

Re: War Of The Roses--Signups open, game starts in August.
Unbalanced seems to be a good move, however, perhaps you can even the playing field a bit by creating a situation in the game where one of the players on the larger team can defect to the smaller team. As it stands, the majority team can stack their votes together and simply out vote the other team. I could be simplfying the situation as there are a ton of rulez in this game. Just a thought.triggercut wrote:1. Unbalanced teams: I kept coming back to one particular problem that bothered me--a deadlocked vote in the early game. I think the assassin player must have a situation which gives him fear of being exposed. Perhaps the guard is protecting the two lowest ranking players so an attack here results in a kill but then the guard expose the assassin to all players. Of course, protection from #1 might be enough already.triggercut wrote:2. There's a lot of death potential here. I think thats cool. I would be behind just two players winning the game.triggercut wrote:3. Giving serious thought to making it so only 2 players on the winning team are the actual winners of the game. Thoughts?

Re: War Of The Roses--Game Starting Tuesday Night!
I'm trying to figure out a use for the Bastard's power. Basically seems he needs to keep quiet until just before the other team is finally killed off, thereby getting into the top three for victory. Other than that, he shouldn't ever use it.
If a higher ranking noble is killed off, does everyone advance up the change, gaining new powers and losing their old ones?

bastards power is clearly an end of the game power and nothing more. it's a reward for someone so low on the totem pole surviving so long.

Posting questions as I read....
14 or 13? I see 13 slots. Is "14" a typo, or is there a non-player character (or hidden character)?triggercut wrote:The blame for the treason and deceit that killed the king and his family can be laid upon the heads of all 13 members of both houses.
