Looking for a dsl modem

Post by brettmcd »

Finally going to break down and get dsl her, (sadly no cable where i live) and was wondering if anyone had a dsl modem lying around they would want to part with. Trying to keep costs down, i would definately pay for shipping and all that. Figure I would check here before i go out and buy one.

Have you checked with your provider? I know verizon gives you a "free" modem as long as you sign up for a year. At least they used to. Otherwise Ebay might be a good place to look.

I've got 2 or 3 DSL modems, but they're all quite specific to the ISP. Including 2 MSN ones.

I've got one of those Alacatel USB DSL Modems. The one that looks like a stingray. I only used it once when my Ethernet DSL modem took a lightning strike and I had to wait for a new one. It's great so long as you have no intention of hooking up a router to it.

send me a PM or Email if you're interested.

Thanks,

definitely look into this first. i got a free modem when i first signed up for SBC/Yahoo DSL almost two years ago, and it's mine to keep when i move. i'm pretty sure a lot of the big-name providers still give away modems with new service, or at least give you a decent discount on the hardware. in addition to the actual modem, i also got a brand new D-Link 10/100 NIC, several in-line line filters, a couple line splitters, a wall plate with built-in filter for hanging a phone, and a couple of phone cords. it was all part of the "Self-Install Package" that they were giving away for free at the time 8)

Sprint sadly wants me to pay 100 bucks for their 'package' of modem and everything else. And as i live kinda in the country, (no cable) they are my only option.

Hey Brett, I have one of these. You can have it for cheap. What do you think?

Check to see if the provider gives free technical support with their modem. I've had DSL from Verizon for about 8 months now. I got the modem free with a one year agreement and the router was free after rebate.

I already had a belkin router and almost passed on theirs, but decided to get theirs since they give tech support on the equipment you get from them.

Glad I did. I know my way around a computer and do my own tech support, but modems and routers are out of my league. I've had to call tech support quite a few times for connection issues and even though they walk me through the solution it still seems like a puzzle to me.

Of course, if you can't connect, you have no access to the info on the internet so you have to get the info from somewhere else.
