Take a tip (from upwind) of the dippers. I keep styrofoam cups in the car and a washable cup at work to contain my shell-spewing ways. It cuts down on the gross factor. It can cause a bit of an issue if caught away from your desk for an unanticipated interval, but those are the risks you take.LordMortis wrote:I debated buying sunflower seeds yesterday for just that reason. Apparently, I lost that debate. I elected not to buy sunflower seeds because eating them and spitting out shells can be kinda gross for the people around you. I think I might be buying them tonight anyway and just not eating them around other people. They'll be really good for sitting on the computer at home and not snacking and not smoking.Isgrimnur wrote:As weight loss is my target, I'm not so much worried about the source of calories so much as the number. Instead of snacking on high carb snacks throughout the day, I replaced them with high fat sunflower seeds. I get fewer calories and expend more calories and spread the intake out over more time due to the effort to get into the shells.
I figure that losing substantial weight right now is serving me more good than worrying about maintaining a fine nutrient balance.

This is a thread about digression! Stop staying on topic!
That is going to take time. To learn to be like a kindergartner again. Getting my snack time and bringing a proscribed snack to eat for said time. Makes me not want to work and go play in the sandbox. And nap time. Though, I'm not sure I ever actually had a nap time. I have to wonder if nap time is a myth. I sort of ideal they sell to you for some nefarious purpose I've yet to understand. The Meal wrote:The trick is finding all those ~100 calorie snacks to put into your system. Yeah, but it takes me like two hours to get through those 25g. And during that time, I'm not sucking down peanuts or cheese crackers. The Meal wrote:160 calories per 25 grams?

Two bags gets me through work without eating lunch, meaning I can normally stroll out the door and to dinner at under 700 calories up to that point.

Re: Random randomness
I'm not making a concerted effort to burn through the bags at lightning speed. Each bag is one serving. Since I stopped drinking sodas, this is the only reason I have to go to Sam's Club. Each bag would cost me $1 in the snack bar down stairs, so that's about a $15 savings right there. The Meal wrote:2.5 tablespoons in two hours? Re: Random randomness
You should actually be snacking a lot. Just on low calorie stuff. I'm a big fan of carrots, but I often eat granola and yogurt, or cottage cheese and canned mandarin oranges. I get lots of calories between meals but it helps keep the metabolism burning and reduces my hungry levels meaning my portion control is easy at meal time. Lots of sugar in the oranges but I still manage to keep calorie count down.LordMortis wrote:Not smoking at work was very easy when I snacked a lot. Not smoking and not snacking. Sheer insanity.
Someone explain to LM about lots of small meals vs just 2 or 3 big meals. I'm all tuckered out after the D'Art fiasco.
This is important LM, so I hope someone fills you in. It's not complicated though, and actually lets you curb your appetite more often than you might expect.

Re: Random randomness
This is absolutely true. LM, it might not seem possible now, but with a little change in your eating habits, you will be going to bed feeling more satiated hunger-wise than before you started to try to lose weight. The Meal wrote:Rare is the day that I'm going to bed hungry wishing I had more calories that could go into my mouth. Spread the intake throughout the day and don't gorge on any one meal (I could probably cut the standard lunch down to 650-750) and you end up surprisingly satisfied.
I was amazed and extremely happy to find that my hunger controlled itself once I started eating more often, but less calories. Because I am a garbage can. I eat anything within arms reach. My wife and I actually argued, because she would serve me these HUGE servings, and I would complain. She would say "just throw it away" but I'm simply not programmed that way. Eating everything on my plate plus not wasting food has been imprinted since childhood. One of the hardest things I did the last time I lost weight was to stop eating with food still on my plate and to throw that food out (since it really wasn't salvageable).

I need a good weekend plan. Otherwise, I fear this will be an excellent weekend to eat, drink, smoke, and sit on my ass. Normally, I'm all about doing nothing on the weekends. I fear that will spell disaster for my diet or my sanity this weekend though. It doesn't help that I am on verge of being flat broke. Or perhaps it does help. Going out for beers and bar food is hard to justify when you have nothing in the ole savings account.

I do my fair share of blowing money. Boy do I. But I like some sort of security. To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

Wow! I got a new Thermos this weekend, and now that I'm drinking the third cup of coffee I poured out of it this morning, it totally rocks! That last Thermos sucked ass (at holding in the heat), and if I wasn't smart enough to drop it last week and put a big gash in its (mostly aesthetic) plastic cup, I'd have never realized just how crappy a job it was doing.
All hail my new thermos!
Oh, and having three monitors rocks.

I'm picking out a thermos for you.
I limit myself to one 20 oz cup of coffee with two teaspoons of creamer powder substance and two teaspoons of sugar now. When I adapt to having a less blonde and sweet cup of coffee, maybe I'll cut the coffee even less and allow myself to drink more.

And also, probably nearly impossible for any of you to read the plates....
