So - this is probably a stupid question - how do you roll or strafe in this game? I've made it this far without knowing how to do either.

360: Hold down the left trigger and hit X while walking in a direction, and you will roll in that direction.

I was just riding around and I came across another cowboy taking a leak next to his horse. I shot him in the back with my rifle and took his horse. I actually felt a little bad about it later. This game is too much!

Even better, you should see if you can "dispenis" him instead.

Guess the game would need true HD for this ... but hogtying him in the process might be a fun thing to do

This one bounty managed to get on a horse and get away from me the other night. I chased him halfway across Mexico before I finally managed to lasso him. He paid a high price for making me chase him so long. I dragged his lassoed ass about a mile back through cactus country. It was nice payback hearing him complain and grunt when he hit rocks and such.

His friends didn't show up until I actually hogtied him. Maybe next time I will just drag the bounty all the way to town before tying him up.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. I wonder if that's scripted. I chased the guy for what seemed like 10 minutes. I had to pick him off with a rifle because catching up to him was never going to happen.

If one is Moe Van Barr for the exclusive outfit, it's bugged. Anything else, it will pop up eventually.

Is there any sense in keeping the gold bullion from the treasure hunt quests?

I'm still in New Austin and working my way through what I believe is the main story line but I'm spending a lot of time by justing travelling around and do things that come up - I assume that the game will guide me into the other areas, correct?

I'm still enjoying the game immensely - so thanks a lot, forum effect, this game was not on my radar at all.

Haven't heard of any reason to hoard them.

Do main quests (marked with letters on your minimap) to advance the story and unlock new areas, but the game is designed to let you dick around with side stuff as long as you desire.

Important note for when you reach the second area: Don't call your horse. Use the one that's there and don't get off until it's over. It'll make sense when you get there.

I like to scout out the bounty location and position myself between the bounty and the horses. If that's not possible, sometimes I'll start the assault by shooting a horse in the ass with a low powered weapon. The horses flee and makes it harder for the bounty to get to one. I'm trying not to kill horses if I an help it. Still, the stats say I've done away with 99 domesticated horses. :(

I find that going after a bounty at night works best. Usually there's only a few people awake and you can drop them before the other guys wake up. I've actually never had a bounty try and run from me. Half the time they come running up, though admittedly I've only pursued about half a dozen...and I've only taken one alive.

I'm pretty sure 95% of my domestic horse kills are with the Gatling gun - and I'd think we'd all agree that it is a reasonable loss.

Also: Apparently RDR doesn't like my strict NAT...first time I've had that problem gaming with the console. Rather than bridging the connection through my PC, I'm going to try using a wireless adapter while slapping the Xbox in my DMZ. I hope the developers appreciate the effort.

My connection doesn't work unless I put it in the DMZ. This is the only game with that problem.. Must be using a weird port number or some crap.

I give up. Even with the wireless adapter, I can't get out from under a strict NAT configuration. If I have time tomorrow I will run the proverbial 100 feet of CAT5 cable through my house to see if that makes a difference, but I can't imagine it will.

What I don't understand is I was able to fix this for my computer to play Company of Heroes, but for some reason the same fix won't work for the Xbox360.

I fully blame my DSL Modem / Router combo unit + Linksys wireless router.

Yeah, I did. FWIW, I've finished the story and I believe all but one stranger mission ("Opiate" one). The ending of "I know you" was not what I expected at all.

Arrg, I was doing the Love is an Opiate mission. I completed my task (the one that involves getting a horse) and the interested parties were walking away. I got back on my horse, decided where to go next, and started riding. One of the idiots walked in front of my horse, I hit him (just a little bump) and got "Mission failed!"

Huh?

So I did the rocket propelled TNT trick on him. :x

I think I have about 30 hours in and I think my biggest complaint is the weird animal spawns, mostly for the wolves, cougars and now bears. I am pretty sure they are tied to a day/night cycle, but I hit some magical spot between Tall Trees and the Plains where I managed to fight off 8+ bears before getting killed by a motivated grizzly. And I'm pretty sure some of the bears have been through Ninja training as they noiselessly creep up on me while I'm gathering plants.

I was reading somewhere that they needed to sell 4.0 million units in order to break even, with a good chunk of the budget going toward promotion. I still don't get all the bad press that was circulating last year suggesting the game was a mess, but I'm having a hard time believing they could have pulled the game out of a nosedive given how it plays now. The best I can figure is that maybe it was bigger in scope and they just lopped out more strangers / stories / missions / areas to tighten up the core we're playing now.

I hope it does well enough to warrant more - without question it's the best Western-themed game I've played.

Just recently got a 360. And also just signed up for Gamefly and picked this for my first game. Wow is it great. However, it is one of those pesky games that have pretty much unreadable fonts on SD televisions. I was hoping to play it in my living room, but no big deal I guess. I mean, that's what I bought the VGA adapter for, after all. I gotta say, this game looks SO much better in HD than SD. With other games (Modern Warfare 2, for instance), SD looks okay because I think they turn up the antialiasing at the lower resolutions among other things, but with this one, whoa. I mean, it looks decent. But in HD it look really good in comparison.

I just read this whole thread, doing my best to avoid spoilers. Though I did catch a minor one. You go to Mexico in this game? Is that a whole separate map? Because the world seems pretty big already.

Speaking of the map, what are those dotted lines? They're not train tracks or trails. They go through the wilderness seemingly randomly. There doesn't seem to be anything of interest on the lines. I can't figure them out. Perhaps I'm just not far enough into the game to get an explanation for them. Or maybe there isn't one. If there's some sort of cool reason they're there, don't tell me what it is. I just want to know if they actually have a purpose.

The dotted lines are county/country/state borders. They really don't mean much.

Everywhere you can go is on the map. Mexico is south of the river.

Yeah, the lines are just indicating different regions. You'll use them more as you start to get missions that tell you go to specific regions to find things.

The map seems pretty large right now but if you go to certain spots the paths will be blocked. As you progress in the story you'll be able to cross back and forth into these new areas.

I'm so stupid, thanks guys. Yet again, my overthinking in games has lead me astray. I had done a Stranger quest in Armadillo that started me thinking that they meant something.
Spoiler:
I think it was called "American Appetite." You've probably all played it. People kept disappearing near Hanging Rock, north of town. I just happened to notice that the first two spots they disappeared from (with the shoe and the bone) were pretty much directly on that line.
So I thought whatever was happening had something to do with those lines. I followed that one as far as it went to the north. Even so far as to go way around and onto the train tracks to get up on the cliff where it ended. Found nothing, though it was a nice view. Anyways, as you guys can probably guess, I later finished the quest. However, it still kept that idea in my head that there must be some weird purpose to those lines. I can't believe I was so dense to not think of county lines and area boundaries. Oh well!

Just make sure you're checking your Journal for updates to the Stranger quests - very few are actually finished after one or two encounters. If they're still listed under "Stranger" (or whatever it's called) there's still more to do and sometimes all you can do is wait for time to pass.

I was confused at first over the "American Appetite" missions because it was the first one I encountered that wasn't obvious what was happening.
