Well they said from the beginning you could access your games come Thursday
This is great news though. I was worried I'd lose THE place I go to buy old games cheap that actually will still work. I don't need BG1 or anything. Still have my disks.
The funny thing about all this is I was using GoG as my virtual backup so I didn't have to make copies of my games

I have come close to doing this, but haven't. I don't have a single game installed that requires me to apply a patch (they are all Steam or GoG), but I can't press the delete button.
I deleted about 2.5GB of BF1942 patches and mods a few weeks ago. Last week a friend sent me a note that he put up a BF1942 server and that we should get the gang back together for some killin'.

Nope, I'm done. I'll make sure all of my stuff is downloaded and then I'll take them off my bookmarks and unsubscribe to their newsletter. That's just BS.
I'll still buy from GoG over Steam, though, if a game is available at both (even if the price is a little more), because of the lack of DRM. But, I've lost the warm & fuzzy; do I really want to give my CC number to a company this unprofessional? And "unprofessional" is the BEST way to describe them now ...
Maybe it's a cultural thing. I didn't know they were based in Poland, there are a couple eastern Europeans I work with, and they both have this same quirky and sometimes cruel sense of humor.
Anyway, I'm still going to be a customer of theirs as long as they have no DRM, and no client needed to play. But after all this, if another company comes along offering the same thing I'd definitely consider switching.
edit - I wasn't replying to Lorini - "What a weird thing to do" refers to GoG.
While I can certainly understand people getting upset about this, I also see the amount of buzz the stunt generated and I have to say, "Mission Accomplished". They may lose some customers who felt slighted, but they probably gained about 10 times the number they'll lose.
It's just as possible and I think much more probable the buzz was almost entirely among people who were already customers or people who were already aware of GOG. Increasing awareness of GOG among the gamers probably did happen, but awareness in a positive way? If this were such a good thing, other organizations should try similar stunts that attack their own credibility: banks could shut down and freeze all accounts as a hoax, airlines might declare bankruptcy and cancel all their flights for a day, hotels announce bedbug infestations and then have a good laugh as their current guests scramble for safety and new guests clamor to stay at the humorous hotels. It's all in good fun.

I never stated it was a "good thing". However, the saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity" has merit in the world of advertising. was it a douchey thing to do? heck yeah. did it get their name spread across the internet in a viral manner? heck yeah. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are deplorable human beings who have made their fame via porn tapes and partying. Yet, they are wealthy and famous because of those very same negative things.
it may have initially been discussed only within the circle of current gog.com customers. but it was featured on numerous game and game industry sites. i'm fairly certain that there are more than a few non-gog.com customers reading those sites.
and the analogy using banks and airlines doesn't really apply in this instance. livelihoods aren't affected on the same scale. not even close.
your view of marketing is based on old school paradigms that hard work and honesty equal success.
So what happens when they really do go out of business because they've lost half their customer base? Who knows? I'm not saying everyone should stop buying there, but if I want to be lied to and made fun of, I can always call my bank.
And I could get the same by calling home or posting on OO!

Hmmm. Is this your way of hinting that a hepcat porn tape is on the way to the intranets?! Welcome to the 21st century internet indeed.

Well, if anyone remembers, OO went offline for like...months...but I digress.
There was a girl (non-gamer...gasp!) at work who was even aware of the gog.com fiasco, so I'd say their marketing stunt worked pretty well.
If anything, I'd say that they will get more people to their site because, let's face it, people are spoiled by Steam/Impulse/GamersGate and thought they'd always be around...kind of like that girl with whom you are casually having sex. I was surprised to see a number of posts (see Penny Arcade thread) of people who said things like "I never bought from them, but I wish I'd done it sooner" or "Damn it, I just heard about the site now that it's down!", and "I hope they come back. Bitches they are, but I hope they come baaaack".
So, for all of you people who are saying you're going to boycott them forever, I think you are only hurting yourselves.

I kinda liked the stunt. It seemed a nice metaphor for what GOG is all about. Taking dead things that still have value for people and bringing them back to life. Sometimes you don't even realize how valuable something was to you until it looks like you won't have it any more.

A slight nit, but they're wealthy because of their forebears. They're merely famous because of the tapes and partying.

To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

The site has been relaunched, but it's sloooow (and sometimes not loading). I guess a lot of people are downloading their purchased games, just in case GOG goes down for real.

I had no interest in them before because I was not interested in any of their products. Now I have no interest in them regardless of their products. They have not exactly improved their lot; it is one potential customer lost.

Whoops.

Well, I wasn't really being serious. But Ms. Paris has managed to pimp a whole lot of perfume and overpriced clothing. Dunno if anyone wants to touch her now though. Back then, I don't think she had quite as much an arrest record.

Just to be clear, I'm not 'boycotting' them because that implies they could change and then I'd buy from them again. I don't buy from places that do what they did, so I won't be buying from them either. Impulse has many of their games and you don't need Impulse to run them, unlike Steam. There's competition in the marketplace and I intend to use it.

as has been proven numerous times, you don't exactly display normal thought processes. Take that as you will.
So...."normal" people think that companies displaying erratic, unstable behavior = good? I guess I need to finally just suck it up and plot my own method to separate such idiots from their money.
It seems to me that they don't understand they have a niche customer base, and they have just willing sacrificed a portion of that niche for what? What the hell good does it do them that non-gamers (like in above comment) now know who they are? How does that turn into more customers?
There IS such a thing as bad publicity. Companies have gone out of business when customers have lost confidence in their product. Others have had to spend incredible amounts of money doing damage control (did you get an urge to buy a new Toyota when they were having problems earlier this year?) I do not see how exposing the biggest fear in ones business model is a conduit to more business. It seems obvious their customers don't have much faith in them if they are scrambling to download everything they can right now. On top of that, each one of those customers who aren't so disgusted that they aren't turned off for good are now more expensive to maintain as customers if they are downloading more to their local machines rather than rely on the software always being available on the servers.
Probably the only worse marketing idea would be if they announced every game they ever sold came infected with a virus.
Like it or not, the fact remains that you can log into the site today, download a crap ton of optimized old school games relatively cheap and then never visit (or pay) them again. There is value in that, questionable PR stunt aside.

Tell ya what, let's wait and see if they're still around after 6 months.

So, company making people believe they might have gone out of business = auto manufacturer selling cars that potentially kill people?
no. sorry. that doesn't even remotely work as an analogy. also, i don't think you understand the saying "there is no such thing as bad publicity". at least not on the level it's intended.
Put it this way. I buy something from Best Buy. The salesperson tells me I can bring it back in two weeks. I bring it back in two weeks and the Customer Service people say "oh sorry, you can't bring that back". "But the salesperson said I could!" "Too bad, you can't bring it back". Then in a week, I get an email from Best Buy saying they were kidding and showing me a video of the Customer Service people laughing and pointing at me while I was walking away. They now say "we were kidding, you can bring it back". I send the video and the story to the Los Angeles Times and all the local news channels. They run it at the 6:00 news.
You honestly think Best Buy wouldn't fire everyone involved at the store? Really? Or that I'd want to go back for more of that? Seriously.

I will agree they are famous for those things... but pretty sure they are wealthy due to coming out of one of the lucky vagina's

I look at it this way: They were going to bring the site down anyway, so instead simply stating this, they did a PR stunt to get some free publicity. The end result would be that you still wouldn't have access to your games for a week. Was it in poor taste? Yes. But, I'm glad it was just a stunt and they're still here instead of being DRMed into Steam/Impulse.

I think folks are being a little overly dramatic with some of these analogies. They're being compared to auto manufacturers selling cars that cause accidents, airlines not honoring tickets and now corporate entities laughing at their customers after ripping them off. At no time have I seen any evidence of overt maliciousness from gog.com. They pulled a dumb PR stunt, yes. They then apologized for any misunderstanding. I've yet to see any links to youtube videos of their employees laughing at their stupid customers, however.
If you're disappointed in the original marketing stunt (and yes, I was too) and don't want to buy from them anymore, fine. I just don't see where they've done anything worth demonizing them. If they had a history of stunts like this, I'd be the first in line to yell foul. I can't find any evidence of this being business as usual for them, though.
