Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Saw a review for Cutthroat Caverns and figured it was a new game. Apparently not. But the tagline - "Without teamwork...you'll never survive. Without betrayal...you'll never win." sounded like our typical gaming session, so I figured it was worth a look.
I read through the rules last night and it seems pretty straight-forward. Our gaming night next week is pretty packed, but I'd really like to try this.

CM2008 available again for $10 on Tanga:hepcat wrote:IN!El Guapo wrote:Today Tanga has Campaign Manager 2008 on sale for $10 (plus $6 shipping):
Does anyone know anything about the game? It seems vaguely hokey, but I'm into politics and I'd love a good campaign game (and I could use another 2-player game). Is this any good? Should I just get 1960?
I believe that someone around here was extolling the virtues of this game a while ago. I've played 1960 and will probably get it someday. But for 15 bucks with shipping, I think I can afford to add this one to my collection as well.
On a side note, Z-Man Games is really amping it up. They're on track to rival FFG someday if they keep up the level and quality of output they've been trending towards.

I missed it last time, but I'm picking it up now.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
couple of games of Cosmic Encounter, a game of Citadels, and a game of Chaos in the Old World to end the night last night.
For whatever reason, CE was much more fun and interesting last night. I drew the Pacifist for game 1 and started the game with 3 negotiates in hand, but got too overzealous and blew them consistently in every encounter, only getting one actual win and having to give a colony for a colony when opponents played their own negotiate. I stopped drawing Ns after that and never drew another, even after I emptied my hand and had to draw another 8. I ended up winning this out of nowhere when, with every other player helping defend the player I was attacking, I basically threw to lose (an 01 attack), only to have my opponent second-guess himself and play a negotiate in anticipation of me playing one. OPPZ. Second game I drew Macron but didn't accomplish much. Our winner was Will (choose who you attack), who also drew his own flare to boot. Overall, I just think it was more fun because everyone got to do "stuff".
I've got over 20 games of Chaos in the Old World under my belt, and last night's game was the shortest and most lopsided I've been involved in. The sad part is, the winner was my buddy's stepson, who had never played Khorne before. The game went five rounds, with Khorne double-ticking in every turn but one (where he achieved a single tick). REALLY hot dice by Khorne, cold dice from us fighting back at key times, and a complete lack of "anti-Khorne" Old World events had us just throwing up our hands in helplessness. As Nurgle I ended the game with just under 40 VP, but the game was really not close.

I was invited to the Memoir '44 online game this weekend. Played it with my friend, it was pretty nice. Having to spend "Gold" that you buy in batches online is sort of a bummer though.

I love Memoir 44 Online and I suppose since it's not going to be free it could be either a subscription type deal or the current pay-as-you-play system. I don't mind the pay-as-you-play system at all. My initial 100 gold ingots (that was back in beta days... I believe you just get 50 free ingots now when you sign up) lasted me several hours worth of games. I bought the "Major" pack (2,400 gold ingots and a $30 coupon for Days of Wonder board game purchase for $60) and have been very happy with that purchase.

Played SAN JUAN last night with RevHempus and kenetickid plus wife; Rev won twice, kk won once, I took one, and kk's wife went 0 for 4 (HA! TAKE THAT FOR WINNING ALIEN FRONTIERS THREE TIMES IN A ROW! YEAH!). Forgot how much fun this game was, going to have to break out Puerto Rico next.

I've got a 5 player game planned for this Saturday and I'm extremely excited! 5-player is most awkward, but that's all I could manage to get this time around.MythicalMino wrote:I have a 6 player game of Twilight Imperium planned for tomorrow....gonna set up the map tonight. I miss playing Puerto Rico. That used to be our favorite game, but I haven't played it in a long time. I should probably dust it off soon (and Agricola too).

Nothin. I've been boardgameless for a couple of weeks now. I need to play something. I was going to try out Forbidden Island with my wife while waiting for the Moody Blues on Saturday, but the persistent drizzle we were waiting under put the kibosh on that.
And no game tonight. Our wives want to go out to eat and just "visit" tonight. Blegh.

ironically, I tried something like that, asking for a card and a colony in exchange for a colony. I had nothing to lose at the time, while the other guy stood to lose his second encounter. Despite that, he wouldn't part with the card.Chaosraven wrote:Perhaps part of the Deal should have been "and you give me a Negotiate for this Attack"

I've talked it up quite a bit in the past. I know Chaos and the gang also play. It's a really fun, simple game that engenders a feeling of immense hatred and distrust of other players. It can, and should, result in at least one yelling match (whether joking or serious). Be warned though, kill stealing is the goal and that can never end well for those with a delicate constitution.Smoove_B wrote:Saw a review for Cutthroat Caverns and figured it was a new game. It looked like you guys were having a great time playing at OctoCon. I know Joe enjoyed it, but he's a backstabby type anyway.hepcat wrote:I've talked it up quite a bit in the past. Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Ended up having only 4 for the Twilight Imperium game. We played 3 rounds today, and are planning on playing some more tomorrow morning.
Interesting game so far. I am the Arborec (from the Shards expansion), Kurtis is Barony of Letnev, Joe is the Ghosts of Creuss, and Jesse is L1Z1X.
Right now, Jesse seems to be the strongest. This is the first time Joe has ever even seen the game, so he is not really understanding what is going on. He seems to be playing King-Maker, doing about everything he can to help Jesse because Jesse keeps threatening to attack him if he doesn't do what Jesse wants. Kurt and I are neighbors, with Jesse on my other side. Jesse has attacked me twice, and taken 1 of my systems (the other system I only had a ship there and did not control the planet). He has offered a peace treaty if I promise to attack Kurtis. I really don't want to attack the Barony, though. That will leave me open on two fronts (vs. the Barony and vs. the L1Z1X).
The problem, though, is that Jesse has a Cruiser and a Dreadnaught parked right outside my system, with another Dreadnaught, Carrier and a Destroyer 2 systems away. I pick strategy cards first next round. I have a Flagship, Dreadnaught, and a Cruiser in my home system. Two systems away, I have a Carrier w/ 4 fighters. I think what I will do, I will take the Diplomacy card, and play it against Jesse, so he cannot attack me for the round. This will allow me to build up my defenses in my home system (I have a fleet supply of 5 right now, so I will be able to have my Flagship, 2 Dreadnaughts, and 2 cruisers in my home system). That fleet should be able to hold off the 1X's fleet(s) if he decides to attack me. I can try to move my carrier closer to my home system also.
The 1X also has their flagship out, and that is about 3 turns away from my home system. If I can eliminate his fleets that are threatening me, I could push him back and retake my system he captured from me. And then hopefully continue to push him back, and maybe along with the Barony (Kurt), together we can push him back some. Right now, Jesse (the 1X) has 19 resources. And combined with Joe, he has the influence to keep Kurt and I from voting anything against him.
My plan is to get the Diplomacy card, play that against Jesse, then build up in preperation to fight on the next round. Hopefully, Jesse will move on to attack Kurt (with him thinking I will join him, which I won't), which will leave him vulnerable to my fleets and allow me to take some systems and get a foothold once again on the Galactic stage. This would put Jesse in a tough position, having to fight me (who will betray him!!) and Kurt. For the second strategy card (4 player games you take 2 strat cards), I will take Technology (if I can). I need to start boosting my technology. Of course, all of these well-laid plans may fall apart as soon as the game starts again tomorrow....
I love this game!! So many options

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Sounds pretty good Mino!
I'm excited to try out the Arborec, their power to build units with their GFs is amazingly cool! I'm surprises Kurtis doesn't have his Flagship out, the Barony's FS is one of the coolest in the game (and a real game changer with the repairing). If he manages to pair that with Duranium armor... you guys better watch out. I think it is interesting that the Creuss player (Joe) is frightened of the 1X. He should really give him the finger and tell him to bring it on. Yes, the 1X have nasty Dreads (DNs) but the Creuss have that natural "chokepoint" at the Creuss gate that seems to be relatively impenetrable IMHO, given the right preparation. And if he manages to grab some wormholes, then that can be sticky. That being said, the 1X are scary, cheap DNs with better combat numbers can be a nasty thing. But so can warping around the board.
Be sure to grab that Arborec racial tech ASAP. Boosting the build capacity to 2 for each GF seems inconsequential, but actually is rather awesome. In theory this means that you can exponentially grow your forces - 1 GF can create 2 (so a small 2 GF fortified planet can suddenly spring out 4 more for 6 GF, or better yet, 5 GF and 1 PDS). Just be sure that you activate that Diplomacy card early on, because you don't want to be holding it AFTER Jesse strikes you and prevent retaliation. My thought is to simply spam GFs at your key planets to make a possible invasion too unattractive to him (and to build a production base for a nice retaliation fleet in the next round). GFs are, in practice, unlimited. Be sure to grab a PDS for the planetary shielding.
I'm so excited to play this Saturday!

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
well....Joe and Jesse....it is kinda a leader of the pack thing. Jesse is the...how shall I say it...the "cool kid". And Joe is, well....Joe. We all work together, and Joe, Jesse and Kurtis are all good friends outside of work. Although, Kurtis has taken more of a stand up to Jesse, but Jesse is the "leader" in their little group, for the most part. Joe is a born follower. So, that type of relationship seems to have come to the gaming table, also.
As far as the game, and the points you bring up. We all, actually, have our flagships out. I just built mine the last turn, to try to keep Jesse from attacking me (that big ship is intimidating). It worked, so far. Kurtis, after looking at his fleet, actually has a stronger fleet than Jesse. But Jesse has more resources to spend at the moment. Kurtis has either 2 or 3 Dreadnaughts out, along with a couple of carriers and a Cruiser or two. I will be playing the Diplo card VERY soon, probably my first go-round in the next round. I am first to pick (I was the speaker the last round), so will be able to pick it up. Right now, I have a fleet supply of 4, so one more dreadnaught in my home system, I think, should hold Jesse off. And keep him from really doing much damage to me. Only problem is, I believe he will take the Initiative card, and maybe swipe two of my planets before I get the chance to play the Diplo card.
If Joe will come around, and form a temporary alliance with Kurt and I, Jesse wouldn't stand much of a chance. All of his ships (except for his Flagship) are on my borders, nowhere near Joe. Joe could really do some damage, I think, which will take some of the pressure off of me (and Kurtis to a lesser extent).
Question about the Arborec special ability. Can Ground Forces build ships? I have looked into it, and most ppl say "yes". But, there are some that also give good arguments for "no". I am reading it that the Arborec GF's can indeed build any unit, but until they get that racial tech, they can only build ONE unit (2 with the tech).
As for my tech...I have not been able to get ANY tech, yet. Jesse became such a quick threat so early, that I have been trying to build a fleet (which he basically annihilated, destroying 4 ships [3 cruisers and a carrier]). He doesn't care about trade agreements or anything, really. He is a very straight forward strategy type player: fight, fight some more, then fight again. I really don't trust him as far as his "peace treaty" offer goes. I think he will jump me as soon as he can, maybe not even going after Kurtis. That is ok, though...name of the game (and one of the reasons I like this so much). But it does put me in a tough spot. Kurtis sees the threat, and is trying to maneouver his ships in line to strike at Jesse, but it has been difficult, as Jesse keeps getting action cards that really hammer us, and boosts him (although, I am kinda thinking we screwed up and he played some cards out of turn, but not sure).
On a personal level, Jesse is a very sore loser, and was actaully quite annoyed when he was going to be defeated in the Galactic Counsel. I don't remember what it was, but whatever we were voting for was going to hurt him, and help us. We actually had the votes to pass the law, and Jesse got irritated by that. He changed his vote so he wouldn't "lose" the voting. LOL...makes me laugh.
But anyways, we will continue on tomorrow, so I am looking forward to it. I just need to come up with something to keep myself in the game.

I don't see why not. AFAIK each GF has the ability to produce 1 unit, just like a Star Dock. Star Docks are also attached to a planet (except for the Saar), so it isn't a matter of it being "on" a planet.Question about the Arborec special ability. Can Ground Forces build ships? I have looked into it, and most ppl say "yes". But, there are some that also give good arguments for "no". I am reading it that the Arborec GF's can indeed build any unit, but until they get that racial tech, they can only build ONE unit (2 with the tech).
The consensus is that the Arborec GFs can't produce while on a Carrier (I'm not sure exactly why and I could be wrong about this) and not after moving or invading (pretty standard really, they have to be in the system before being activated to build).
Just remember that most people say they can't "pool" their production capacity, so that means 3 GFs would have to spend 3 resources to build 3 GFs and not 2 resources (until you get that racial tech).

CM2008 available again for $10 on Tanga:

I missed it last time, but I'm picking it up now.
It might have been me that extolled the virtues (it's been a while since I played it). It's a light version of 1960. It's shorter, and I don't consider it as replayable (I think there are fewer ways for the game to go). It's a great short game, though, and excellent as an introduction to the heavier 1960. For $15, it's definitely worth it.

I like Campaign Manager 2008 very much. It plays quickly, around 30 minutes, and is something like a cross between M:TG, 7 Wonders, and 1960. Good, particularly if you can get it cheaper.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Score! I just made a trip to a not-so-local FLGS and I found, buried on a shelf behind some other games, a sole copy of the Phoenix Elves vs. Tundra Orcs Summoner Wars set. Both of the original starter sets have been out of print for awhile now, but the Elves vs. Orcs were much more popular than the Dwarves vs. Goblins and have been impossible to get short of outrageous prices on Ebay. My almost 9 year old son has taken to Summoner Wars a lot lately... can't wait to give these guys a try.
Beyond that... I feel like I'm waiting for more games than I'm playing. 7 Wonders: Leaders and Small World Underground won't be here in the US until July, while Dungeon Run and Belfort are coming in August

I have to say, despite enjoying Small World quite a bit, I'm not terribly excited for Small World: Underground. It seems like pretty much the same game just with new races and a tweaked setting. I feel like if I want to get a new game then I'll get a new game, not a mod on a game I already own.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Well, I'll admit I'm a Small World fan so this was an easy sell to me. From my reading of the rules it seems to me this isn't so much a mod or expansion as it is a subtle but significant reworking of the game. They've taken a lot of popular and powerful racial powers (like the Elves and Sorcerers) and made them special powers (Immortal and Vampiric), making them available to any race. There's a river that runs through each board which you have to "pay" an army token to cross but can't occupy (the token goes back in your hand at the end of turn) so it's a little tough attacking across a river... but the river spaces are long and are adjacent to several others... letting you attack distant spaces. They've also added special items and locations that are randomly seeded on the board, which will give players something new to fight over.
Finally, it seems that with a few exceptions (say, drawing Immortal Elves as a power/race combo) the two games can be incorporated together and that just means more crazy combos and gameplay. Folks on BGG are already working up rules to combine 2 maps and have an overworld/underworld setting in a single game.

Galaxy Trucker: Big Expansion
Definitely a no-brainer. The upgrade kit was kind of unnecessary, but having it let me avoid having to mix the expansion and original parts together. Generally speaking, the stuff you see in the expansion allows you a lot more flexibility in-flight.
As for the new stuff:
We only played with the new spaceship parts and alien, avoiding the "extra difficulty" cards and "extra extra difficulty" cards, since we still routinely don't make it to the end, even on the first flight. The new spaceship parts include stuff like "Indestructible Plating" and "Shield Boosters", which allow you a mechanism for blocking heavy lasers and big meteors that you were unable to shoot down. Also, we saw bi-directional lasers, cannon engines (sigh) and weapon/engine boosters, which allow a one-time super boost to a relevant attached component, except the component then blows up. Also of note: Reactor Furnaces (finally, you can regain a limited amount of battery power mid-journey by tossing goods into the furnace), Stasis Pods (keeps four extra crew "on ice" in case you take losses) and some adventure cards which are quite mean / beneficial. There's one card, where everyone bids, and the highest bidder gets to nominate a set of coordinates, and everyone loses whatever component is on those coordinates. Ouch.
The blue aliens are pretty useful, but not game breaking (although there's that one jackass that basically gives you a free energy point per adventure card).
All in all, well worth it.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Another round of Mansions of Madness last night, this time with 3 players using scenario two. I might have to change my thinking a bit from pseudo-GM to a vindictive player instead because I lost another game. There were numerous times when I could have played cards or dropped monsters that would have been extremely bad for the players, but it just felt like such a harsh move that I skipped out and just continued with lesser, slightly irritating tactics.
We also had a Castle battle rematch in Heroscape that went really well. In trying to take back the castle we went with an army made of up 9 squads of Phantom Knights and then some random guys to fill the remaining 120 points. It took us 9 rounds, but eventually wave after wave of green phantoms were just too much to defend against. It was actually pretty close, but it made for a tense encounter.
Tried Inn-Fighting to close out the night and ended up playing for 2 hours, playing three games. Once we had the rules down, the turns were just flying by. I am a bit surprised at how low it's rated at BGG...maybe because of the D&D name people were expecting something else? Or perhaps we were able to benefit from various FAQs and rule clarifications that helped with the less-than-stellar rule book? I don't know, but for a casual game we had a lot of fun.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
We played another game of 51st State this week. I made a point of refusing to play New York because I'm convinced they're disadvantaged with range. hepcat decided to give them a try and had a good start and a decent end-game after stuggling in the mid-game. joew played the Merchant Union which seemed pretty balanced and steady (and superior to New York). I played the Mutant Union which had a more clear strategy, and I pulled the leader who gives VPs based on conquest and had a good run at the end with the weapons resources/VP generators. Getting the Storehouse early on was critical since it let me carry 3 resources to the next turn, which is exactly what you need when you're pulling resources from conquest. Getting extra cards from conquests also opened up a lot of options. I think the expansion will make 51st State a better game, becuase the game needs more than 3 factions.
We also played Alien Frontiers. hepcat kept rolling triples and used it to great advantage in placing colonies with the Colony Constructor. At the end, there was a fair amount of play with the Raiders and stealing each other's items. I avoided most of the fallout by stealing the Holographic Decoy (which requires any raider steal the Decoy instead of resources). I was also able to secure the win by steadily advancing the colony placement track to challenge hepcat's control of territories (using an Artifact that let me borrow the +1 colony movement bonus for 1 energy per colony on the territory), and rolling 6s for Terraforming. joew built up a horde of Alien Artifacts but fell behind early on due to getting no chance to buy extra dice until mid-game. Control of the Burroughs Desert (and the +1 Alien Ship die) for the entire game helped me a lot, and I was surprised that nobody contested it. To win Alien Frontiers, you have to pull out the knives.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
smoove: the game is much more compelling for everyone when you play hard as the keeper. There's a phenomenon I've experienced in Arkham Horror that I've found holds true here as well: losing to the game gives me something to play for and makes the intermittent victories that much more satisfying. YMMV depending on the gaming group, of course.
A buddy trekked over this weekend with his son, two nephews, and two friends and we pretty much boardgamed non-stop for two days. I've never hosted that many people here before. It was pretty nuts. All in all we played the following games: DungeonQuest, Time's Up, 4th Corner, Chaos in the Old World (with the Horned Rat expansion), Battlestar Galactica, Senji, and Wrath of Ashardalon.
DungeonQuest was, well... dungeonquest, goofy and fun and arbitrary. One guy had a record setting amount of swag on his person (as noted by previous records being written on the inside of the game box) but was unable to get out as we all failed miserably. I managed to piss the dragon off two times without taking much damage, but the third time inflicted 11 wounds and down I went.
Time's Up, still best party game ever and one of the most rewarding games I've played in any genre when playing with the right group.
CITOW with Horned Rat was definitely interesting. We drew random factions and I got exactly what I was hoping for (the Horned Rat). Things were pretty chaotic for a while as people wrapped their heads around the new cards. I had a good grip on The Horned Rat pretty early and shot into a pretty sizable lead midway through the game. The last couple of turns saw me fighting for every VP I could get my hands on as everyone tried to pile on to prevent me from winning. I made a huge mistake the last turn of the game loading up a bunch of clan rats (cultists) into The Badlands trying to get a ruination share, not realizing that due to region order Kislev was going to ruin first. Since it was the fifth region to be ruined, our Tzeentch player, who ruined the Badlands on the same turn, got screwed out of a boatload of points AND the game. Meanwhile, our Nurgle player took advantage of this and got the ruiner's bonus and second place in ruination in Kislev, shooting him past me at the 11th hour and winning the game by ONE VP, 55-54. Just goes to show you: this is a game you really need to pay attention to every step of the way.
Battlestar Galactica was, in short, astonishing. For literally the 6th or 7th game in a row, I was the only Cylon in the first loyalty handout. After the player before me turned up a Cylon attack card, I decided to forego my usual strategy of lurking until I could find my eventual Cylon counterpart and revealed myself on the very first turn. It was the best decision I could have made as two MORE Cylon attack cards were revealed in the next 3 turns, with raider activations galore... and NO jumps. Before they knew what hit them, the humans finally managed to get to one space shy of the end of the jump track... but the cost was outrageous: 7 or 8 civilian ships bit it, the FTL was down, and they only had *3* remaining population. Yet another Cylon attack card was revealed shortly thereafter, and then I pretty much ended it by my supercrisis... you guessed it, the Massive Assault attack card. The attack effects of the card didn't actually cause much damage, but the loss of 2 spots on the jump track were completely devastating. The humans kept fighting and actually held off death at the 11th hour, but losing that much population so early was just killer and the game ended in a fireball with the death of yet 4 more civ ships. They never jumped once. Grand total on the attack cards was 5 (6 if you count my supercrisis) out of maybe 25 or 30 total crisis cards. The game took literally just over an hour. Ridiculous and it'll never happen again, but... woo!
Wrath of Ashardalon... I keep thinking when we first sit down that I just don't like the game due to the encounter mechanic, but each time by the time we're finished I've ended up having fun. This game was perhaps the most fun and rewarding yet as we staved off annihilation by the skin of our teeth at least 3 or 4 times as we built up a ridiculous amount of experience points and forgot about using XP to nix events. We used up both healing surges and had 3 other players down at different times, but healers managed to save those downed players before their turns came around again. At one point we had over 30 experience points saved up, with only person rolling a natural 20 to level up, so we were able to wipe through the entire endgame (killing a bunch of critters and escaping down the secret tunnel) without much trouble by nullifying every one of the really bad encounters by dumping 5 XP for each. After coming so close to losing so many times and considering the teamwork we had to employ to come through, this one was REALLY satisfying.
Senji... I'm torn and unsure, but intrigued. Anyone out there played this? This one is part area control, part diplomacy, part battle, with factions vying for honor by killing (and losing!) units, trading for cards that you play in combinations to earn honor, etc. Torn and unsure: without considering the diplomatic aspects, combat seems extremely simple and VERY dice-driven: add the number of units each side brings to the battle, then roll all 8 dice. Add the number of times your house symbol appears on those dice to the running total, then play a support card (if you have one). These cards, if you've negotiated for them, allow you to recruit additional units from other factions (represented by the symbols that showed up on dice you weren't able to use). The loser loses all units committed to the battle while the winner loses the number of units the loser lost. One such combat early in the game saw one of the guys try a huge attack on me that I only managed to win because of a high-value combat card one of the other players had traded to me on an earlier turn. Additionally, I was pretty bummed that, after I played a pretty diverse game of trading, hosting enemy family members, and winning battles, another player spent the entire game just sitting back drawing cards, without being attacked... and flew past me on the very last turn to steal the win from me. So I'm torn and unsure because of how well that strategy worked and over how arbitrary the combat appears at first, but as I said, I'm also intrigured: the diplomatic aspect of this game is integral to everything and after one play I was still mostly clueless on how to work it efficiently. I sense a lot of depth just due to that diplomatic system and I think I'd like to play again to be sure.

Taught Alien Frontiers to my older son and a couple of my friends I hadn't seen in quite some time. They loved it. Also got to learn the italian rules for Bocci (sp?) Ball, as we have apparently always played by redneck rulz.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I picked up Through the Ages: A Story of Civilzation and played it last night. I'm still mentally sorting it out, and we only played the Basic game! We didn't even deal with War, Pacts, etc.
It did feel a lot like Civilization for the computer, that's for sure.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
Tommy and I got in a couple of boardgames last night. We haven't had a game hit the table in a long time, so I convinced him to come over and get some boardgaming in.
First up with Alien Frontiers. I jumped out to an early lead, but then about mid-way through he completely dominated the game. That seems to be a recurring problem for me with this game, in every game i've played I've come on strong in the beginning and then petered out at the end. Also, we both agreed that the game wasn't nearly as much fun with 2 people as opposed to 3 or 4. Hopefully try this out with Stuart next week. He hasn't played, it will be fun to have a newbie to pick on.
Then I dragged out Carson City. I've owned this game since last GenCon, where I picked it up at a scratch and dent table for $20. I had read through the rules a couple of times, and was still kind of baffled about how the game worked, but I figured we would at least give it a few turns and see how the game flows. Well, we got it figured out by about turn 2 and got a full game in. We both really enjoyed it. I think overall Tommy had a better strategy on the table...I do believe he outplayed me resource wise, but I (in a change of pace for me) went with an aggressor route and had more ranches and mines than he did, so I was starting at a +3 for all of our duels. That enabled me to grab the contested +3 token (but just barely) and after that I pretty much won every one of our duels in the final round. Based on me winning those last round duels, I was able to eek out a 1 point victory over him. I want to hit the table with this one again, especially with a couple of extra people. Highly recommended.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I really liked Carson City. I seemed to be alone in that though. It got put away and hasn't been played in a year or two. We never even explored that much of the strategery. The game was largely reactive while trying to set yourself up for the last turn or two. It misses the Puerto Rico like nature of trying to force other people to take the turns you want them to take, but I don't think it suffers for it. Rather than that, IIRC the goal was to keep your options open moving into the last two or three turns, while still being competitive.

I know that I was feeling like I was playing a very reactive game to Tommy's. He seemed to always be one step ahead of me (which is not uncommon) and I would then have to jettison my plans to try and react to his. "Shit! He just went for the saloon, and he has a crapload of houses and an empty parcel. Well, I can't let that happen." I liked the fact that unlike Agricola or LeHavre if someone else grabs something you need, well, pardner, looks like we're gonna have to slap leather.
Neither of us ever touched the XP point squares in the game...but I can see how in a close game they could be a pretty big game changer.

This is exactly why I much prefer Carson City over other worker placement games where the only "interaction" is taking something before another player has the chance to. Going first has its advantages, but so does being able to outgun anyone else.hentzau wrote:I liked the fact that unlike Agricola or LeHavre if someone else grabs something you need, well, pardner, looks like we're gonna have to slap leather.
I played a game of Wilderness War yesterday, the GMT game about the French and Indian War. It was quite good, and I especially liked how well it implemented historical aspects of that war into the rules and gameplay. The French have lots of Indian allies and can move through the wilderness much more easily than the British, who have to rely on networks of stockades and other fortifications. However, the British have an overwhelming force of drilled troops, if they can figure out how to get them where they need to be. For awhile the French and British sides are almost playing two different games. It's really interesting.

LM, I have no idea why you thought you were alone in liking Carson City. I thought we all did. I'm not really sure why we are not playing it still/more often. I'd happily pick it up again.

I enjoy Carson City as well but the wife and I sort of put it aside. We only ever got to play 2 player, which is fine, but not a fun as more people. And I always decided I didn't want to teach other people because it suffers from the common Euro problem of being a pain in the rear to explain all the little contingencies. Still, it has as much strategy as Agricola and plays much faster. I still prefer Le Havre, but it takes SO long to play.Remus West wrote:LM, I have no idea why you thought you were alone in liking Carson City. I thought we all did. I don't think I'd want to play CC 2 player. It doesn't seem as though it would have the same feel at all. We usually have 3-5 people though (3 or 4 being by far the most common though) and I actually am not sure even three would be as much fun.baelthazar wrote:I enjoy Carson City as well but the wife and I sort of put it aside. I've never played Le Havre.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I'm looking forward to trying CC with another player. While it was fun with just 2 players, I really can see the appeal of having a 3rd player in the mix. More conflicts for space and resources = more bang bang pow pow. I'm not sure that Stuart will really go for it though, he doesn't seem to like/do well at most resource management games.
And I'm a big fan of LeHavre, but I don't think I've had an issue with it being overly long. Any time you teach someone the game for the first time, it will take longer, it seems...I remember my first game being 3 hours, but after that we've managed to get play time down to about 2 hours.

Speaking of Puerto Rico, I taught that to kenetickid and his wife. She was absolutely in love with it. While I have been at work, he and she have been playing Dominion and Cutthroat Caverns with the kids.
