Any sports games with a single person career mode ?

Post by MeSlayer »

I was just thinking about this while browsing through one of the many OOTP threads:

Playing a sports game like an RPG-like career where you start out as a rookie pitcher or something, negotiate your deals, up your stats by doing well, etc etc

That would interest me much more than a baseball manager mode, but it could be fun in other sports too

Are there any sports games that are like that ? Text games are fine too, probably preferable actually

Inside The Park Baseball is probably the closest you'll get to it. I never gave it a lot of time, but I bet it's improved since the initial release.

Edit - Just to clarify with my bad memory of the short time I gave it, you start out as a minor league ballplayer with a set of skills that you have some say (if not complete say) in determining and then you work your way up through the minors and the bigs. You can buy better equipment that influences your ability, read books and some other stuff.

There's at least one professional racing game that does this, along with the usual golf/tennis/whatever. I'm not aware of any team sports though.

Powerful Pro Baseball 10/11 has a mode like that. You start as a rookie and gain in skills depending on how you do in games and at the end of each season, you negotiate your salary or enter the free agent market if your contract is up. If you wanted, you could even make your character from the minor leagues through a different mode and get him into the pro league...then use that character through his professional life in a different game mode. I've only played #10, which was the one where they introduced this mode. It's fun, but it's definitely not as well thought out as it could have been. I've heard that they really improved upon it in #11. I think it's only for Japanese PS2/Gamecube though.

I cant' tell -- are you looking for a baseball only type game?

Because in Tiger Woods PGA Tour, you create a golfer and can play in a career mode (among other things). You get money and training that increase your abilities (control, driving distance, putting, etc...).
Maybe next year, maybe no go

No I'm talking about team sports in general, sorry I should have made that more clear.

I realize that a racing / golfing / tennis / etc sports would have more of an single persons career aspect, but I was just thinking how fun it would be to play out a career in a team sport

Obviously I'm in the minority there because there don't seem to be too many games like that : )

Can you take steroids to enhance your career? Maybe get set up with a dealer, buy and use better drugs as you move up. Get hooked up with another guy that gives you stuff to enable you to pass drug tests? That would make it real :)

There's a nice text based soccer game pretty much exactly what you describe. You gain stats, can move up to new and better teams, even buy houses and cars with your money. It also has a minor relationship aspect where your fans/family/teammates/girlfriend(wife) have relationship meters, that go up or down depending on post-game press conferences.

Free Star soccer or something like that, I don't remember the name and lost it along with my old hard drive. :(

Racing or boxing, yes, but in a team-sport? Nope.
