Ok, so played ST DBG last week...

Once on Monday, once on Tuesday, Twice on Wednesday, Three Times on Thursday, EIGHT times on Friday (st00pid Borg), and Once on Saturday.

And you know what? I am feeling the twitchy itch from NOT playing Sunday Monday or Tuesday.

I really hope they continue the franchise and release expansions based on the original series.

Cuz honestly, I'd like something new to freshen it up after some time, so it doesn't hit the shelf and wait (like Dominion has, recently).

So I just discovered these little beauties:

They're knitting needle row counters. Run about $1.50 each. Even cheaper on Ebay.

My first thought for using these was for the Lord of the Rings LCG, to add more players since the only real holdup in adding them is the threat counters (only two provided).

My second thought for them is to use them to replace the D20 you use to track damage for the STDBG. I like using these because a) you don't need to search for the next number and b) if you wanted to, you can keep your damage hidden (if people aren't paying attention from turn to turn, they don't know how damaged you are.

Third thought? Damage counters for Sentinels of the Multiverse (which really pissed me off that it came with no way to track damage).

Damage counters for Wings of War (although the tokens worked fairly well at the last OctoCon.

Etc.

Ok, my crafting geek has been aroused.

I am going to make Ship Counters (like those old Magic life counters) with a spin dial and trek pix.

And my wife is now laughing at me.

Nerdsday Night (wednesday in ann arbor) with the boys.

Played 60card casual one on one, a couple 4 player, and a 5 player edh.

Crushed the kid, got slaughtered by the Hawt Chick, trashed them all, and came back from the edge (in that order).

Ok, so I am seriously thinking about picking thisstar trek deck builder game up tomorrow, but I want to know...why you guys feel this is such a great and fun game where you cannot get enough of it. It is either going to be this...or the Rex game, but I am leaning more towards the star trek game. Just wanna know why you all think it is so good...

Thanks

Oh...which one should I get if I do get the star trek game? The first or the expansion?

If you aren't getting both, get the first one.

Have you played deckbuilding games? Dominion, Thunderstone, Arcana, etc?

Aren't you in SE Michigan? If so we could plan to get together with CR, LM, redrun, bb2112 or some combination thereof (although it would require CR as he is the only one of us that owns it currently) and play the game. Then you'd know what you are getting into.

No, I live in SW michigan.

I have Dominion, Nightfall, Eaten By Zombies, Immenent Domain, Blood Bowl: Team Manager.

Not a real stranger to the deck building genre. This one interests me....but I am hesitant about taking the plunge. I have the money to buy both the first and the expansion is that the suggestion? To go ahead and buy both?

The first game comes with 15 ships, a set of missions/events to create the Space Deck (where you explore and where you get the points to win), it also comes with a Team Scenario (and different Space deck) to play the Klingon Civil War, and the Cooperative Borg Space deck (everyone against the deck). And a bunch of nifty cards for Starbase to purchase Crew.

The second game comes with 15 different ships, new missions/events, and the Space deck for another team (Romulan Reunification), and the Borg2 Space deck scenario (cooperative again).

We have been playing with the 30 ships and missions/events from both sets and the Starbase cards altogether.
We have tried the Borg scenario with 5 players and with 2. We tried the Borg2 scenario with 2. Don't play with 2. It sucks to get slaughtered repeatedly.

There are 5 promo cards out there as well.

Essentially, you buy Ensign, Lt, and Commanders for XP (like coins), equivalent to purchasing Copper, Silver, Gold.
You buy characters and maneuvers from Starbase to make your crew better.

When you feel ready, you explore the Space Deck for a better ship (if you have enough Speed and Diplomacy, otherwise you must fight it) or for Missions that you can accomplish with your Crew and Ship stats. If a Battle event occurs, everyone fights EACH OTHER for the points of the event (last man standing with the highest attack value).

So if you have four people who like deckbuilding games, it has Free For All, Teams, or Cooperative regardless which one you buy.
Mixing them together makes for more Diversity within the game, playing them separately makes for different games depending what's in the decks.

The primary complaint heard from all sides is getting hosed by not upgrading your ship when others have, as it is a Serious Advantage to have upgraded stats.

another plus is that with both games you can technically have up to 9 players in the exploration mode...although I wouldn't suggest it unless you're looking for 12 hour game sessions.

Basically it oozes Star Trek theme. The major and minor characters are available and priced nicely as "upgrades" to generic Ensign, Commander and Captains (who are usually used as money).

I think it lets a player run away after picking up a ship, but enjoy playing anyway even when my combos are not working out smoothly.

I wonder about having a house rule regarding what happens when your ship gets blown up. Instead of keeping it as your flagship, maybe when your ship gets blown up you go back to the basic ship type. That would mean people with upgraded ships would need to either plan on losing it or spend time building shields/repairing their ship to keep it around. Obviously, if you are at the basic you would stay at that level if destroyed.

I'm hoping Alex (the designer) shows up in that thread to weigh in. I'd love to hear his take on the situation.

I'd also like to see friggin' card dividers in the next set.

I bought some posterboard and weaved it around the foam to make sectioned areas.

For my magic sets I bought color coordinated foam sheets to delineate White Blue Black Red Green and Brown for artifacts/lands. I cut them to just longer than card size and organized the sets by color.

And I cannot believe I just admitted that to you.

COSMIC ALLIANCES just showed up in the mail, so it's time to reorganize my Cosmic set (hybridized with the Mayfair and EON currently)

baby steps

earlier this week I mentioned it and she thought that was a long time...
last night she asked me where it was...
maybe tonight she'll soften up a bit more... of course after last night's conversation I pissed her off so maybe not.

I'm already playing tennis Saturday morning (if the rain gods bless me) so it may be dicey. Dice-y. Ha!

well....for those of you that may have been interested in my wonderings....

I didn't get the Star Trek game....but instead, I went with a game that I had not pondered before: 51st State and The New Era. After looking into it, it really, really started to look really cool, and with a theme that is not seen much in games. I think my group will like it, once they get past the icons and all.

Chaos will disagree with me, but I would suggest taking 51st State back. New Era is 51st State 2.0 and despite the claims that they can be combined, if you're like me it won't work. The icons are different between versions (drastically so in a few instances) and you'll have to refer to two different icon translation charts to figure out what does what. plus, all the cards from 51st State will not have the new distance arrows at the top of the cards. You can add them via a cheat sheet but I dislike having to perform conversions on the fly.

I played A LOT of 51st State and have posted about it before. But I probably won't go back to it now that I have New Era.
