Burnout 3

Post by Break »

I've been waffling back and forth on this game. Should I get this? Should I not get this? There may have been a thread about this game when it came out, but I wasn't paying attention back then :) Any help is appreciated.

The consensus from the thread on gonegold was that this is a brilliant game which will reward repeated play solo and multiplayer. I haven't picked it up, yet, but iimagine that will happen as soon as I tire of Project Gotham, which really isn't a similar game.

It is an incredible game. I bought an xbox a month ago for Fable (which I was very dissapointed in) but Burnout 3 made it well worth the purchase. I don't even like racing games and I find myself addicted to it.

You are right to tire of Project Gotham first though. Since playing Burnout 3 I can't stand to play Project Gotham anymore, a few minutes into playing Project Gotham and I am switching DVD's to get some real speed.

While I have been disappointed most of the overhyped XBox games, Burnout 3 is amazing and well worth a purchase. My brother in law came over to play it on Saturday, and had to be kicked out 8 hours later.

Burnout 3 is the best arcade racing game ever made and no Xbox game library is complete without it.

I'm not even that into racing games, but I wore my thumbs down to a nub on the single player game, cursing and yelling at the TV and nearly driving my wife to divorce. But it was worth it because I really doubt I'll have a more satisfying gaming accomplishment all year than 173/173.

I had the first Burnout and traded it for Burnout 2 last year - an OK game but it never really blew me away. I honestly had more fun with San Francisco Rush on my N64.

so what (if anything) makes Burnout 3 incredibly better than Burnout 2?

Sense of Speed, Online Multiplayer, New Game Modes, Graphics, Sound...

You name it. It's improved in Burnout 3.

multiplayer isn't a big drawcard - I don't have X-BOX Live and my kids hate driving games.

does it have a decent in-car camera?

Actually, I don't believe there is an in-car camera. I'm pretty sure you get the standard two bumper cams + two behind car views.

The main thing that distinguishes B3 from every other racing game is the way it makes crashes an integral and exciting part of the gameplay. When you crash you hold down the A button and in slow motion you try to steer your crushed hulk of a car through the air or across the pavement and into your opponents as they overtake you from behind. Makes for some tasty, nailbiting takedowns and some infuriating just-misses.

Don't be a doubting thomas! :D You'll love it!

I received this one for my b-day this past weekend and am loving it. 25 events done so far. I love the sense of speed. I did however search for the DJ and turn him off after about 30 minutes of play. And I will be loading some tracks on to my X-Box this weekend so I can get rid of the cheesy music. But the gameplay is sweet!

I do have a problem with the downtown races in the US. It's really hard for me to see the taillights or support pillars when I'm racing under the bridge. I can't even pass the Preview 1 Burning Lap race. I need 1:03 for a gold and I can't get better than 1:20. Urg!

Yeah, for me the DJ was turned off after about 10 minutes, and the whole of the music after about a half hour.

EA pretty much sucks at putting music in games as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure there must be some people that enjoy that crap, but I can't name one EA game that had a soundtrack I could even stand.

There are a handful of good songs, but yeah, I recommend turning off the horrid DJ and ripping your own tunes to the hard drive.

My tracks are all Linken Park and Limp Bizket. Great songs to race to. The songs that come with the game are definitly worthless.

well Burnout 3 arrived yesterday and I did a few events last night. it is certainly faster and a little prettier than the previous game (which justifies the upgrade I guess) but I haven't yet found the magic in this series. give me Carmageddon or San Francisco Rush any day...

I was in love with burnout 3, but like a rose, it faded. Once I got over the oooh, and ahhh of the spectacular crashes, the rest of the game became a bit well, boring to me. The crashes are very cool, no doubt. But you should know the A.I. cheats it's ass off, but that's by design. May work for some, but it didn't for me. It's not much fun to have a great lead against the A.I., only to have it magically catch up to you at the end, for the sake of making it "exciting".

My suggestion is to rent it first, and while you're there, rent Test Drive Eve of Destruction. Eve is a fantastic game, and I'm having a blast with it. It's career mode is a sheer joy to participate in.

I'm not here to knock BO3. I know it's a fun game. I'm just saying , give Eve a chance. Don't let the Test Drive label dissuade you.

thanks for the tip - Test Drive Eve of Destruction appears to be PS2-only in Australia but I'll check it out if it makes it to X-BOX.

so is there any point using "Impact Time" in regular (non-crash-for-cash) events?
however I steer my car during a crash its position is reset when the race resumes anyhow :?

The only reason to steer your crash while racing is when somebody's barrelling up behind you and you can take them out. (It takes only the tiniest little lovetap.) The two reasons to do this are 1) to impede your opponent's progress and 2) to fill and extend your turbo bar.

At first the camera seemed frustrating because half the time it wasn't showing a rear view so I couldn't see what was coming up behind me. Then I realized that's because it only shows behind you when there's an opponent to see.

As for the rubberband AI, a good (maybe even essential) strategy is to conserve your turbo energy when you're in the lead. That way, if someone overtakes you, you can boost into them for a takedown or boost past them to retake the lead. Since the AI plays catch-up, sometimes it's best to not even try to extend your lead. (Though it is possible to pull ahead of the pack so much that if you crash you still won't be passed.)

In theory, I've always agreed with you about rubberband AI. But Burnout 3 is my favorite-ever racing game so something in that equation does not compute. Maybe because B3 is a crashing game at heart, not a racing game.

Agreed, in most racing games you would be concentrating on the fastest way to take that corner. In Burnout 3 your wondering how to take it while pushing your opponent into that oncoming semi.

That's really it. Rob is right too, it's not a racing game. The designers let the A.I. play catch up, so you can do mean things to them again once they do :)

Which is understandable. I'll buy that. What irritates me is that the rubberband A.I. doesn't work the other way around - if I'm taken out or crash once or twice in a race, especially later in the game, I'm fucked. There's no way to catch up, because the rubberband A.I. doesn't work for me and the A.I. cars never make mistakes. Once that happens, the "crashing game" aspect is ruined. It seems to me like an arbitrary way to make the game more difficult, and has led to a lot of frustration for me. Most especially when I crash due to something that I really couldn't avoid, such as hitting something around a corner or hitting oncoming traffic over a sight-blocking hill. In that case, winning a race becomes less a matter of skill and more just dumb luck.

If I had a reasonable chance of catching up to the leaders, then the whole gameplay method of taking risks and maxing out speed and boost to retake the lead would make sense and be a ton of fun. It just doesn't work when you take a corner at 150mph, slam into an oncoming truck, and as soon as you're reset you see "You are 15 seconds behind."

Sigh. Restart.

So, anyone have any ideas when this is going to drop in price? I keep telling myselft that I am on a game buying moratorium but I cracked for Halo2 preorder and will again for HL2. I tried this in Worst Buy and enjoyed what little I did.

How do you activate the custom soundtrack? In the audio options all it lets you do is change the volume?

Keep digging around in the menu. I think it's under Profile or something. What's annoying is that you have to reset the soundtrack each time you load the game. Fortunately, the DJ stays off.
