That was disappointing. The guy buried his time capsule just 3 days before my 13th birthday, making him about the same age as me based on his opening photo. Pretty sure that I would have chosen more interesting items. It might have been cool to hear excerpts from the audio tape if it was playable.

In the third grade (1985ish) my elementary school buried a time capsule with the plan to dig it up in the year 2000. I hadn't heard anything about it in 2001, so I called the school to ask if the time capsule had been dug up. I was told that no one could remember where it was buried. :grund:

If only there had been some sort of recording device that could have been used to determine where an object was buried, perhaps with some sort of character that could mark the location for determination of it.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I'm pretty sure I remember where it was buried, but they didn't want my help when I offered. Back when I called about it I think there was only one teacher who was still there and I don't think the administration was too keen about digging up their grounds.

S**T people say at record stores

EDIT - due to Hepcat's comment I came back to link to the article I had read yesterday, which lead me to the linked video.
Guess record store owners and employee's can pick and choose what they decide to buy from their customers these days, even with
the economy being in the proverbial crapper.

If that's the owner of the store, I doubt he does very well. He's kind of an asshole. If he's an employee, he's likely to be fired if his boss sees that...for being kind of an asshole.

It keeps track of timing and other details for our tournaments.

There's a few ways you can run a poker tournament, the most common is that everyone buys in for the same amount (for our early tournament, it's $10) and you'd receive the same number of chips. Everyone then plays against each other, and the last few people left win the prize money. To kick things into gear it's necessary to increase the structure of the tournament so that the blind bets (and/or antes, if those are part of the structure) get bigger over time. The laptop helps keep track of these times and increases in the structure.

Periodically you see me get up and leave for a few frames. There's another laptop off camera which actually hosts the tournament software, then I use teamviewer to mirror the display on the laptop screen which is in the picture. Typically we also do that for the TV screen which is located behind the camera, but on this particular night we had the NFL playoff games (on mute) going on the tube, which is why you can see certain players seem to be focused in that direction.

MHS was the big winner in the second (big money) tournament! (I busted out in 7th out of the nine of us.)

Headhunter music has a beat :)

So let me get this straight....you use the redhead as a distraction while you look at cards? And you still went out in 7th? :) Is MHS the permanent dealer or did I just not see it move?

Check out the guy's site who does that music. He's got zillion of tracks available of all different kinds, and best of all it's totally free (and royalty free, so Youtube is fine with folks using it). I sent him $5 via paypal just to say thanks. Kevin MacLeod, you're a good egg!

The rest of us exist just to be distracted by the redhead. She knows how to work it (and it helps her cause that she's about 10x better than any of the rest of us at actually playing cards). (Helps keep attendance numbers up as well.) MHS dealt for the end of the first game (after she got knocked out), but in general we rotate the deal. She always sits in the traditional dealer spot as it's easier on her back that way (and she can be bossier from that seat), but we have a white "puck" on the table that says "DEALER" on it to signify who'll be passing out the cards.

Ahhhh ok. I will look for that on the re watch. I think I'd rather sit at the 'ends' so as to keep my cards more secret. I'd have to wear sunglasses too as Im terrible at a poker face. Dad taught me poker at about age 9 and my step grandad was in a senior league back home in Missouri. He taught me a lot too. And he played for money or didn't play. It was always strange having to get up money to play my grandpa lol. Great guy. Miss him at Xmases. But now I've forgotten it all and only play poker in games lol.

My dad wouldn't play poker "for fun" because it wasn't any fun unless money was at stake. And he wouldn't loan you money, either, because what's the point of playing against your own money? We only played penny ante but it was dead serious. I had a reputation for being good among my friends, but I was never a good enough bluffer to be really good.

I don't think I've played poker since the old man died. Well, I did try Texas hold 'em once, but that was just strange and not-fun.

Poker is all about motivation. Without money on the line, the essence of the game is ruined. If you could (somehow — magically?) convince people to give it their all, then you wouldn't have the need for money to be involved. I think it's because there is such a large random element. Despite how challenging it is to play well (despite a very simple set of rules — very comparable to chess), it's also pretty easy to lose and to chalk those losses up to the random element. There'd be no fun in, say, playing roulette for "fun," but poker definitely has enough going for it that it's an enjoyable activity in and of itself.

Bluffing is an element of the game. Or rather, it can be an element of the game. Folks who don't know poker too well vastly over-emphasize its importance. Same goes for having physical reads on your opposition. These are the nuts sprinkled on the top of the banana split. You'd still get the diabetic coma (you know, the desired effect) without them, but they do add some to the whole experience.

Texas Hold 'Em is rather simplistic in terms of rules (Europeans tend to gravitate to Omaha which ostensibly ramps up the difficulty factor, though really it's just window dressing on the actual strategic layers to the game), but as they saying goes it takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. I know the strange appeal it had for me when I first watched it on TV. "There are multiple books on how to win at this? How could it take more than a chapter?" I went to the library and checked out one of the books which was mentioned (Doyle Brunson's Super/System). It was a bit of an eye opener on the topic. And of course, the game has come a long way since then. The internet was a heckuva petri dish, and since 2007 (or so) the game has gone through some radical strategic changes (most of which have not really made their way to our home game).

Anyway, we enjoy having folks over once or twice a month, knocking back a few adult beverages, and giving each other "the business" over the felt. I had the opportunity to take stock in how I did in 2013 at our home game, and while I netted a few hundred bucks from playing cards, I know that I shelled out twice that just in keeping the beer fridge stocked. Poker's social relevance is certainly in decline, but it's funny how we still manage to find new folks to pull into our game every few months. If you have any interest in playing face-to-face, find your local American Legion or seek out a weekly pub game over the internet. Generally these are free (or very low stakes) to enter, and you'll be very likely to meet folks there who will bend over backwards to make sure the "new guys" (i.e., "easy money" in their minds) have a good time and teach you the ropes. Worst case it costs you $20 and you lose three hours time. Best, though, to do what Daehawk suggests, and play a bit off-line to make sure you know what hand beats what and a little bit about how blinds work. You don't want to be a complete fool when you show up, right?

Anyway, glad folks liked the videos.
