"The universal gaming controller will provide a Windows controller standard that helps game developers bring different genres - such as racing, sports and action/adventure - to the Windows platform more easily," said Chris Donahue, group manager of Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies at Microsoft. "Gamers will have more playing options with a familiar, versatile and well-designed gamepad-style controller."
Black Lives definitely Matter Lorini!
Also: There are three ways to not tell the truth: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
From the sound of it, they're just saying the new X-Box's controller will also work on the PC. I'm not sure how it is all that different from an X-Box controller and a PC X-Box controller clone, save that you only have one instead of two.
I play almost no games on the PC that would benefit from a gamepad. If they were to come up with something that beats the kbrd/mouse in an FPS or RTS and had the range of assignable commands that a kbrd provides in a strategy game (think Warcraft or Civ hotbuttons), then perhaps I would be interested.
Otherwise, like BH said, it's going to be little different than what is currently available from Logitech.
You do not take from this universe. It grants you what it will.
I'm all for a universal controller but don't want it to be the only option.
If my xbox360 controller works on the pc too, then yeah, but I don't want the pc world to consist of only 1 controller.
All MS is doing is releasing stuff that other companies already did for the original xbox controller. I've been using that on my pc for a while now since its really just a usb controller with a funky end.
I mainly use the gamepad for emulator games since keyboard/mouse feels funny on those. I also play vice city with both keyboard/mouse (on foot) and xbox controller (in car). Retired my ancient sidewinder gamepad but still use my sidewinder 3d for flight sims.
As long as a PC will let me use whatever controller type I want and reconfigure it however I want I'm happy.

There's a certain amount of chicken-and-egg here. Games that are well suited to a gamepad don't end up on the PC since gamepads for PCs are neither widespread nor standardized.
This is great news! Console controllers are constructed better than PC gamepads and most people don't want to have to hunt down drivers or modify their console controllers to work on a PC. This also might mean even more console games appearing on the PC, which I am all for as well.
Oh, and I almost forgot, standardization of a PC controller would be highly welcome as well.
