The Supersuckers were here again just a couple of weeks ago. He's touring fool in the area right now. Three appearances in Detroit at a tiny venue in what feels like less than a year after a fairly long drought.

Reading between the lines on blogs and forum posts and whatnot, the past couple years have had a lot of upsets in the Supersuckers' world. Record label changes, management changes, band member changes...

Despite being 29 and having a broad taste in music, I've never been much of a concert goer. I guess I have trouble justifying the price, and don't really see the point in live music. Music tends to be an introverted experience for me; something I use to withdraw from others and reflect, or employ as catharsis.

Last night, I went to my first arena concert though, and I really enjoyed it! (Backstreet Boys with my wife several years ago doesn't count, since I was there more to keep her company.) While it was really someone she has more interest in (Paramore with Hellogoodbye and Lights), it was still a lot of fun. I don't identify with Paramore culturally, but I enjoy their musicianship in their genre. Hayley Williams has great energy, and the stage design was very interesting. I felt very odd and out of place in a stadium of 13-year-old, stick-thin white girls, though. The ones sitting next to us had to leave several songs before the end, I presume to catch their ride or meet curfew or something.

We're already planning to get tickets for Arcade Fire when they go on sale tomorrow morning in Toronto. I'm also looking forward to when one of the indie bands I like comes to town and I can try going to a more intimate show, or when one of my favourite metal bands come by (rare, since most are European). I'm already really sad I missed seeing Parts & Labor before they disbanded, and really hope Tom Waits comes to Toronto again before he hangs it up.

Is there a particular best site you guys use to track when your favourite artists announce tours?

I follow some artists explicitly. I use bandsintown on facebook and songkick, in general. I also subscribe to most local promoters and some favorite venue email listings.

This is why I like the small show experience. I find at large shows, bands generally play in front of audience. I generally don't experience connection and I don't like the price. It takes a rare performance where I know exactly what I'm in for to see an arena show.

If you had elected to see Paramore last year (2012), you would have seen them for about $20 a pop playing for 1200 people at the most. I've never seen them but for bands that I enjoy, the experience changes when you play less and less people. We saw Sleigh Bells last week. They didn't play in front 500 people. They played to and for 500 people. The singer called out her cousin in the audience by name. She hangs with the crowd. She talks to us after the show. The band plays to and for us. They actually feel our energy, absorb it, amplify it, and give it back. The absolute worst seats in the house are 30 yards away and we get to pay less money for all of this bonus. If you see $15 show (Sleigh Bells was $30) for someone you may or not get that experience for, the worst thing that happens is you walk out and do something else that night and are out fifteen bucks a head.

Concert going is still an introverted experience for me though. I don't date at shows and I don't hear well enough to hold conversations with people. I'm just enjoying the energy and the musicianship and hopefully the craft of the band to connect, to spark, to rally.

I saw Chris Cornell's Unplugged and Up Close performance last night...totally awesome show. He managed to captivate the entire audience for 2.5 hours with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and an amazing voice. It was quite a change from hearing him at the front of a hard rock band, but stripping everything else away really showed Cornell's incredible talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and guitar player.

The other great thing about the show was seeing a sign advertising the Pixies playing at the same small theater in January. We ordered our tickets on the spot...should be a great show!

Saw him a couple of weeks ago. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you wrote. Was very weird to have an obvious rock crowd descend on a beautiful theatre, but everyone was surprisingly well behaved.

Wire is having their city: DRILL mini-festival in Seattle right now, so i went last night (where they played as the first opener) and will go on Saturday (where they headline). i won't be able to go tonight (Helmet is headlining). unfortunately Dir en Grey was also playing last night, which i fully intended to go to, but my favorite band won out.

Got tickets to the Arcade Fire arena show in March, but they're pretty bad.

I searched for tickets on Ticket Master's site the minute they went on sale, and the best that came up were upper deck three sections from the stage, I believe nine rows back. When I went to pay it timed out it. So I wound up even further rows back. At least that made them cheaper, I guess.

But gee, you log on as they go on sale, and all floor and lower deck seats are already gone? I read on the AF reddit that even those with pre-sale codes couldn't get any. Ridiculous.

But in reality, I imagine poor seats won't diminish my enjoyment. My wife didn't want floor seats anyway, and lower deck were probably more than we could reasonably afford.

23 Nov 2013, King's X at Amos' Southend in Charlotte, NC.

Weird night for King's X. They played a set that had some surprises that were clearly more mellow and then ended early because Doug was in pain. They still made it through 14 songs, but by the 10th, he couldn't hide it anymore. He finally had to say something about a hernia operation not fixing a problem. He kept doubling over and holding his side, and finally sat down for the crowd to sing Goldilox. I'm pretty sure they were going to play Dogman and Pray because he kept getting confused and thinking the next song was Dogman, and he never got out the 12-string bass. After the rather abrupt end, they still came out to meet fans. Doug tried to come to the table for a short time, but he couldn't take it. In fact, when one helper was guiding him out under the shoulders, Doug told him to just pick him up. He had to be carried out from the merch table. Ty and Jerry were pleasant and we got a picture and autographs.

These guys are totally committed to the crowds of lifetime fans they attract. This had been 4 years since they'd been here before, with Jerry's heart attack in the meantime. I can't see them pulling it off much longer. Doug is 63.

They were to be in VA today and had to cancel.

"dUg Pinnick had to be rushed to the hospital last night after our show and is going to require further surgery and recovery from his hernia. We regret we will not be able to play the show tonight in Springfield, Virginia. We'll keep you posted on dUg's health. Thank you to everyone who came out to our shows the last couple of nights and to those who were planning to come tonight!"

That does suck. I often forget how old they are. Mostly because of the energy they have when playing.
I was worried it was over when Jerry had his issues.
Heres hoping for a full and speedy recovery and that they continue to rock for many more years..

This is what I get for not being on the ball and catching here earlier.

Life is so unfair. Concert going is so backwards. I'd happily pay $10 to see her at the Masonic. I would have happily paid $40 to see her at the Loft a year and a half ago (where she sold out before I had a chance to get $10 tickets)

Lord Huron is the 31st
Sleeper Agent (opening for New Politics and another band whose name I can't find at the moment) on the 4th is my consolation prize for missing the creationist museum debate.

My sister is trying to talk me into Skinny Puppy as well but I think that will be enough January and February for me.

March opens concert season. If I have the oomph, I'll have to figure out if I'd rather do Les Claypool or the Pack AD come March 7th.

We missed the Creepshow.

Doors were open at 8. We figured with four bands and the Creepshow going on second and the show going until 02:00, we we could easily get there at 21:30 and I wouldn't have to be on my feet for six hours at a show. Only there were only three bands. Deke Dickerson didn't get a set. He played a set with the Reverend and the Reverend played for nearly three hours minus a couple of short breaks.

On the bright side the Reverend was fantastic as usual and his gig just got better and better as the night went along, even if I came out to see the Creepshow. Toward the end, he played almost the entire Gospel According to... album which is my favorite album.

I won't make the same mistake for Sleeper Agent next month... But then I tried listening to New Politics (the band they're opening for) and I am completely uninspired by their music, so I'm likely to see the opening set and then take off. /bummed Sleeper Agent hasn't played as the main act in Detroit since I first heard them maybe four years ago, maybe but at least they're coming as a warm up act with a short set. There are shit ton of bands who never even bother coming at all.

And apparently, I am no longer Yosemite Sam. I am now Eric the Viking.

Saw Arctic Monkeys last night at the Boston University Agganis Arena. The opening acts were the Orwells and Deerhunter. Missed most of the Orwells, but caught the entire Deerhunter set. I'd never heard them before, and I was interested at the start. First couple of songs had a cool, atmospheric vibe. But then they seemed to go off the rails into ear splitting distortion ugliness. Not my thing.

The Arctic Monkeys were outstanding, though, right out of the gate. Very cool set with a towering LED "A M" behind them which they could vary in intensity and effect throughout the set. Between that and the fog and mirror balls and different colored lights, probably some of the coolest lighting effects I've seen in a while. But take that with a grain of salt, as I've basically sworn off big stadium concerts in favor of only going to smaller venues. Agganis Arena isn't a stadium, but it's the biggest venue I've been to for a show in five or six years probably.

Anyway, if you've never checked out an Arctic Monkeys show (or the band generally), I'd highly recommend them. I saw them back on their initial tour in 2005 at the Paradise (small iconic Boston club), and to say they've grown since then would be a huge understatement.

Here's a review from the Boston Herald on last night's show. The review is a little annoying, but it gives a flavor for the night.

Next show on my calendar is a Valentine's Day present for my wife: Taking her to go see Lorde at the Orpheum. Not a show I'd necessarily go to myself, but I'm actually looking forward to it. She's gotten so much buzz, and the songs I've heard from her are solid. She's different. Check out this video if you're interested: Royals.

An absolutely epic show with Amon Amarth, Enslaved, and Skeletonwitch last night.

Skeletonwitch definitely brought the most energy (that singer is a madman on stage), and Amon Amarth was solid. I wasn't a big fan of Enslaved prior to the show, but gained a new level of appreciation for them as they were really fantastic. Especially since the all power to their instruments cut out multiple times during their set. They'd get halfway through a song, and everything would just...stop. They handled it remarkably well, and I still came away incredibly impressed with them, even though I really only heard 5 songs and 1/2 of a few others.

Also realized that I am getting waaaaaaaay too old for metal shows. I didn't even really get in and mix it up (much), but came away sore as hell today from all the headbanging.

Seeing Lake Street Dive again on March 1st. They just released a new album a few days ago. I think it was last week or the week before they were on the Cobert Report, heh. And, the lead singer appeared in House of Cards S2 EP6 (she was the singer at the ball game). They got a good review of their new album in rolling stone and were on Letterman as well.

Update: Saw them. They were incredible. Really an amazing band to see live imho. Extremely tight and Rachelle Price is just has a certain presence about her that is mesmerizing

Most of their remaining shows in the states are sold out due to their sudden rise in popularity, but still some places have tickets. If you are even remotely interested in a jazz-influenced indie-pop band, check them out live if at all possible (most of the stuff is better live). You won't regret it.

Watching Ogre spit out "Warlock" while flaying his arm with a massive knife (using clever prosthetics) was a thing of beauty. I avoided the "splatter zone" for this show, but had a blast nonetheless. Seen SP four times now, and this one might have been the best. Such an immensely creative stage show, and Ogre hasn't lost a step as a front man.

Unfortunately they did continue their tradition of absolutely awful opening bands. Army of the Universe was the crap foisted on us this time...they were a disaster. You'd think I would learn not to show up until waaaaaaay after they open the doors.

Les Claypool is probably out so I'm tossing up BJ and the Carnies which will be a bar with over 200 "friends" that I never see or The Pack AD, whom I've had to pass up in the past. Theoretically, BJ and the Carnies will be the more fun night out and fun is what it's all about. But who knows when the next opportunity to see the Pack AD will come around.

I know you know the deal...who knows how many shows they will ever play again? Except you're in Portland, if they're ever gonna play again in the future it'll be there...unless this is a toe in the water for them? We can hope!

We saw them twice on the last tour. First time Jenny was there, second time she had already gotten sick. The second show, even without her playing, was in the top 5 of shows I've ever seen ever. It was an outdoor show in August at Interlochen where Chris Funk was a summer camper when he was a teen. He gave shouts out to teachers of his that were in the crowd...aromas of camp fires from the State Park across the lake drifting over...very enthusiastic music students in the crowd that they brought on stage...perfect weather...magic show...

Well, that was kind of an adventure.

Logged on at exactly noon and got in the "virtual line" for 3 VIP tickets. After a minute or so I got a screen saying there weren't enough of that type of ticket availble. By then the regular tickets were all gone too. Colin posted on Facebook that the show sold out in 15 minutes but the online system was either overwhelmed or all the tickets had been aloted within 5 minutes. I kept refreshing but everything showed "tickets not available"

I gave up and went to lunch. When I got back I kept hammering the site and I actually got a single VIP ticket in my shopping cart. I didn't want to go alone so I bailed and kept refreshing but never got another hit. I wound up with multiple browser windows open and in the process of closing them all noticed the VIP ticket was still showing as in my shopping cart.

With a timer at the top of the page reading ~1:30 before I lost it.

After frantically typing in my credit card info I was able to complete the purchase!

Unfortunately I couldn't get tickets for my brother and my girlfriend and regular floor seats are currently selling for more than the VIP ticket face value on stubhub. I guess a band that can sell out two nights at an amphitheater can sell out a small venue pretty quickly.

Still, in the end I'm going to the VIP meet and greet!
