Re: concerts....who you seeing?
I just got home from seeing Paul Simon & Sting on stage together.
2 and a half hours of awesome. Such a well paced, dynamic show, melding two bands and catalogs seamlessly. Fantastic tribute to the Everly Brothers at the end of the encore set.
Definitely the best rock concert I've ever seen.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Saw Arcade Fire tonight with Mrs. Nym and it was great, even though we needed a pair of binoculars. It was still an awesome experience, but we obviously need to work on our ticket-buying skills. Frustrating that the only way to get decent seats for a hot performer seems to be to get in on the pre-sales.
Was sad my favourite album of theirs, Neon Bible, only had two entries on the setlist. But I guess it's my fault for not seeing them play two albums ago. The plentiful material played from their other three albums was still great.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Now that it's not a Frozen Tundra any longer here in MI shows are starting to ramp back up.
Just picked up tix for:
05-01 Supersuckers
05-29 Detroit Cobras
06-30 King Buzzo doing a solo acoustic show
Having seen all these acts (well not Buzzo solo) many times in the past I am looking forward to some fun evenings!

Supersuckers are in town like 5 times a year nowadays. I saw them in November and they've already been back twice since then.
Still never seen the cobras.
I continue to cut more and more out of life. I'm just too damned tired (I heard Deer Tick were awesome on Wednesday for instance) but
I'm seeing Black Jake on Saturday.
My maybes are:
Eels 6/3
Band of Skulls 6/6
Flaming Lips 6/12
Kaiser Chiefs 6/15
Swans 6/21
Foxy Shazam 6/22
Counting Crows 7/18
Gogol Bordello (actually to see Man Man) 7/30
Probably in order of probability:
Band of Skulls
Flaming Lips
Eels
Man Man
Foxy Shazam
Swans
Kaiser Chiefs
Counting Crows
There might be more but I haven't been paying attention because I just haven't been going out.
redrun talked me into a ticket for Fleetwood Mac 10/22

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
I have tickets to see the Decemberists on 5/30 and the Throwing Muses with Tanya Donelly on 5/31. I never got a chance to see Tanya play with Throwing Muses and I've been a fan since ~1994. This is a show I've been wanting to see for two decades.
This week I learned my daughter's theater class performance is on... 5/31.
Her performance is at 7. The show starts at 8 at a theater about 45 minutes away. With a little luck I can make it for the encore.

Saw Arcade Fire on Wednesday night in Denver. Apparently a few of them were quite ill but they imo still put on a fantastic show. Ready to Start was exceptional and Here Comes the Night Time followed by Wake Up in the encore was superb. Great event!
Edit: Regine sang as perfectly as I've heard her, just glorious when her and Win sang "It's never Over" on opposite sides of the arena.

I'd love to see The Decembrists again. I saw them perform with the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra a bunch of years ago and really, really enjoyed it.Exodor wrote:I have tickets to see the Decemberists on 5/30 and the Throwing Muses with Tanya Donelly on 5/31. As far as the other concert, I don't suppose they are playing some other day in, say, Seattle? When I was younger, I'd travel to nearby cities sometimes to see bands I was fond of. We had a discussion at work yesterday though about things that are just too much effort in old age. Gong to sporting events was one (unless a vendor is inviting me to a skybox seat). Concerts are another, particularly large shows, although I sucked it up last year and took my wife to see one of her favorites, Bon Jovi.

F'n Slayer May 10th and a friend of mine last night invited me to see Steel Panther next week since he has an extra ticket.
I've heard Steel Panther shows are similar to going to a strip club so I took him up on that offer.

Just got tickets for Rodrigo y Gabriela. Can't believe they're coming here locally since their US tour stops are limited. Should be awesome - we have an intimate little amphitheater down by the lake that will be perfect for a show like theirs.

Saw Shining (Norway) open for Dillinger Escape Plane a few weeks back. Shining destroyed. My life has been changed. Seriously amazing band....
Saw Gojira (2nd time) open for Mastodon night before last. Gojira destroyed. My life continues to be changed. Seriously tight band....
BTW, at least for the first show of the tour, Mastodon was so boring/bad/lame that I left early. Mastodon. Seriously. YMMV.

Forgot to mention me and the wife are booked for this next year. Unbelievably stocked.
I have two friends who have previously been and most of the bands are readily available during the cruise. The bands mingle with the fans and even have been known to do late night karaoke.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
They are insanely good. I mean... maybe even better, somehow. It's just so well performed, and tight. Being a drummer, they really speak to me, simply because the majority of the music is heavy, rhythmic, and complex.Skinypupy wrote:I've heard from lots of people that Gojira is incredible live. If you live in Vancouver (don't you?), you're out of luck, yes. Next tour they'll do something local again. Every show in Seattle has increased 2 fold, at a minimum, in regards to attendance. They went from approximately 150 at their first show (where they sell 12,000 tickets in France) to 400 last year (on tour with Devin Townsend), to 1200 on Monday. I'm very happy they're getting the looks.
Now, I can only hope Shining will return and soon. There has been some mention of them touring in the near future with Devin Townsend as well, simply because he's working on Z2 and he is nearing his Casualties of Cool release with Jorgen playing sax on it. Would be sweet, for certain. Shining is outstanding live.

skipped a lot of good stuff recently (missing Godflesh hurt), but i just found out about Death in June next week; can't miss that. also just bought tickets to Kraftwerk in July (3-D concert?) but unfortunately New Order was sold out.
Loop is this week, playing a teeny-tiny venue on the reunion tour. i have the last album they put out decades ago and it's pretty good, but Robert Hampson's Main project is far more interesting to me. in any case, i'll take what i can get.

Saw Slayer/Suicidal Tendencies/Exodus two nights ago.
#1 Suicidal was a freaking beast. Never enjoyed their music. But these guys know how to put on a live show. Their energy was off the wall. If they headline a show in Denver, I'll be there.
#2 Exodus was solid but only played 5 songs
#3 Slayer was Slayer and owned it. Couple points, if you like old old school Slayer, the set was a dream. Everything pre 1991. They rocked it to 19 songs. Hearing Hell Awaits, Chemical Warfare, and Dead at Dawn at the same show is a Slayer fans dream.
#4 Gary Holt shreds, buff said.
#5 My wife left our balcony seats to go in the pit during Raining Blood. That's a cool wife. But it ruined the performance for me because I had to watch and worry about her the entire song.

This evening's festivities have the added distinction of this being my wife's last day at a very VERY unfulfilling job. She's moving on to bigger and better and we are celebrating that!

Just saw Lindsay Stirling at the Riverside theater in Milwaukee last night. It was a great concert in a great venue, although I will say that it seemed like a bit of a short concert. But tickets were cheap, and my daughter loved every minute of it.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Last weekend was my double-concert weekend.
Friday night after watching Elise star in "Seussical" (she was amazing) I made it to the Decemberists show just before they went on. They started by playing "Castaways and Cutouts" in order. Now, I'm a big Decemberists fan but that's far from my favorite album and a few songs in the middle are...slow and draggy. The show picked up after a short intermission when they played a more varied set. Nothing new but Colin mentioned they had 18 tracks recorded for a new album!
Saturday night might have been even better. The show started with Tanya Donelly accompanied by a celloist, guitar player and one other player. She did a great mix of Belly tunes, solo stuff and a few Throwing Muses songs. I didn't think I'd ever see Tanya play live again after she announced her retirement so it was a rare treat.
The main Throwing Muses set was even more fun. They started with a bunch of new stuff which is quite good. Then Tanya joined the band they ran through a bunch of older stuff - including some songs recorded after Tanya left the band. The encore was just the core Muses doing a few post-Tanya songs.
What a great weekend of music. I don't have tickets for any upcoming shows (I'm skipping the kickoff of the Veruca Salt tour ) but this will hold me for quite awhile.
