Someone design me a game...

Post by LordMortis »

Neil's mentioning of Car Wars has me wanting to play the old Apple/Atari Autoduel. I imagine one of you guys to could whip out a simple version AutoDuel like game pretty quickly.

Hop to it!

...That or mail order monsters, or Seven Cities of Gold. God am I feeling nostaligic right now.

Or the old SSI classics like Roadwar 2000 or Roadwar Europa... Did I get the names right?

Ya, but only if you can find an Apple 2GS emulator to play them on. CGA graphics make my eyes bleed. I can still see the portraits of the purple orcs from Pool of Radiance!

I'd second AD or CSoG. Get to it!

(And who's this Neil character?)

I think I might just start screwing up all of my spelling intentionally and I'll completely drive you screwy. What's horrible is that this will keep me straight for a week and then my normal lack of brain function will take over and I'll forget.

How hard is it build a grammar and spell checker into UBB?

The spell-checker is a right-click option in Opera 8. :)

Not an option for me. I have no fewer than 6 B2B web aps that require IE 6.

I think I started spelling your name incorrectly when I started reading more Neil Gaiman stuff. So you can blame that poor association on him.

I am still waiting for a programming volunteer.

If you've got a Dreamcast U2k is your man. He's got a whole team of programmers at his beck and call.
This is not the sig you are looking for.

Someone get him in here!!! Alas, I don't have a DreamCast, but I would get one if independents started making remakes of my favorite 80's computer games and still kept the "stuff" that made them fun.

The thing is that I'd like to see them design a new one with new technology, however without making it new technology centered if that makes sense.

I might even have to break down and buy a control stick sometime in the future as XWing has also been calling my name.

I even tried to run the original Mech Warrior a few years back. On my AMD k62 350 the speed was too insane.

I'm even thinking about breaking out Syndicate again as I sit here.\

...Damn, I have spend too much money on video gaming over the years.

No fun here, but I played Roadwar 2000 a few month ago on WinUAE Amigaemulator using .adf files of the original Disks. I still own the Game, and in addition I think it's abandonware anyway. When I first changed over from quick battle to tactical battle mode...man that was a blast those times!
Gaming? Nope, I'm into Bitwig.

PoR had EGA graphics.. 16 colors is a mighty improvement over 4.

I dloaded and ran Roadwar 2000 in xp just fine a few months ago. The site I dloaded it from had something in the executable that made it run..I have no idea what but it worked fine. Yes 15 years ago I owned the actual game so save your piracy sabers for another! No it did not bring back fond memories, it is hideous to look at, yet I wasted half a day with it anyway :).

I have been thinking of trying to get an Autoduel version to run in xp lately as I have been rehashing old classics(recently played xcom, wasteland, darklands, gold box ad&d) for some unknown reason to try and break outta a gaming funk.

Auto Assualt well be coming out soon and is a Car Wars like mmorpg, at least thats what I keep telling myself.

What is Steven Jackson up to now a days?

GURPS and stuff. I wish he'd license Illuminati for pc. Done properly, I would never need another game.

I would like to add my plea to Lord Mortis' for a version of Car Wars similar to the one which used to run on the early apple. I could waste the entire rest of my life with that game.

A lot of the best ideas in his glory days came from Warren Spector, who was the Brian Reynolds to Jackson's pen and paper Sid Meier.

Still, Jackson designed Car Wars and Illuminati and OGRE on his own. If the Catholic Church is correct about good works, Jackson has a parking space reserved in heaven.
Over here.

Mail Order Monsters rocked. That was my favorite game for the Commodore 64. Even though the game would take 30 minutes to load up (if it loaded at all), it was worth it. I loved making a T-Rex with photosynthesis.

As close as we can get for the moment. Maybe good sales of this title will get us a true Autoduel sequel/remake.

Is that the same Warren Spector I think it is?....google says yes it is! How did I miss that he worked for Steve Jackson Games. His bio said he helped develop Toon for SJG and Top Secret for TSR....I loved booth of those, go figure. Holy crap his game credit list is easily the most impressive I have ever seen. This guy has been entertaining me for 20 years  . Sorry for the derail, I'm of to go stalk Mr. Spector now.

Speaking of games, I'd like to see a Battle of Britain game done from the British ground controllers perspective. You see a plotting board showing Britain and the coast of France, and icons for the enemy raids coming in.
Something akin to this boardgame map but done on the computer. There would be background chatter as new reports come in, and possibly radio transmissions as fighter groups head off to intercept.

I have Talonsoft's Battle of Britain but it was I think too detailed for me. Perhaps something a little more light, but that still gives me the feeling that I'm an Air Marshall trying to coordinate Britain's fighter defense. Maybe if we have a virtual plotting board with the female WAAFs moving the icons around the board as well.

Warren Spector also cowrote a few PARANOIA adventures for West End Games
