In my never ending quest to chat up games that no one else plays, I thought I'd bring this thread up to date. I did play a little Automation back in 2021, but this is the first time I've gotten serious with it again since the previous decade

. It is still in Early Access

but is pretty much feature complete for the car and engine design portions. There's also a "light" campaign, the full campaign is still in development.

For me, the fun part of the game is designing cars and engines. And as I've noted before, the game has a very detailed systems to do that designing, but it doesn't really require a lot of automotive knowledge or good drafting skills (
hah!). The game starts off with 1946 technology and goes up to 2012. For me there's a lot of fun designing cars that are restricted to that post-WW2 technology:
But what makes it all really special is that once you have designed a car, you can export it to another game, BeamNG

BeamNG is a driving game, or rather as they say: "
A dynamic soft-body physics vehicle simulator capable of doing just about anything". BeamNG comes with a bunch of cars and a bunch of locations; the locations include a test track (and environs), a couple of urban centers, some nice offroad places and some other locales.
And what makes it really fun is that I can export a car I build in Automation and then drive it in BeamNG. And BeamNG, being a very detailed "
dynamic soft-body physics vehicle simulator", allows me to enjoy all the little nuances of my car design, motivating me to go back and tweak this and bump up that and generally have a good time.
Both games are on sale right now, check them out.
