I'm so disappointed in myself.

Post by Little Raven »

I'm almost 29 years old. I am happily married, and have been for seven years. I have two wonderful children. I command the respect of my peers at work and still keep in touch with my college buddies. I have beaten Civ on Diety. I have written programs to calculate ideal trade routes in Escape Velocity. I have been fascinated by a Hong Kong bartender who philosophized on the ramifications of human government, and I never bought Diakatana.

I am, by most any yardstick, a mature gamer.

And yet I still get a kick out of the Time Bitch in Warrior Within.

Civ III. I've never beaten 'Sid,' though, which is now the hardest difficulty level on Civ III.

To be honest, I'd much rather play at Monarch. I can win at Diety, but in order to do so, I have to start treating the game as a giant math problem rather than a game, and that really, really takes away from the fun. I only beat it on Diety once to show myself that I could.

I can only win occasionally at Regent, and that's with thousands of hours of experience with Civ 1 and 2.

Believe me, Hatter, you're plenty smart enough to take Diety if you want. All it takes is a dozen or so hours spent reading forums over at Apolyton or CivFanatics, a pocket calculator, and the patience to review each and every unit and city each and every turn in order to make sure you're maximizing its potential at any given moment.

I found this to be about as much fun as pounding my head against a brick wall. Some people must enjoy it, though. There are plenty of people who have beaten Sid. I am not among them, and I have no plans to try and change that.

Stick to Regent, if that's where you enjoy the game.

Yeah, you know, that's the philosophy I take. Sure at higher levels I could treat each turn as my last, analyze every city/unit, run a decision tree 10 turns out for each move, etc. but it's just not fun. I prefer to play at a level high enough to be a challenge, but not one so high that it just isn't fun. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this attitude.
