Wow Rome Total War, Call of Duty and Age of Empires II all in one poll?

They all play so differently. I liked Call of Duty myself but it's not a strategy game and not really a simulation either.

well i have a write in vote. While i love Rome and it absolutely stunning i still have to say that the ones that still holds a place in my heart, due to mechanics and fun is still Warcraft II and Starcraft

That is a tough selection to choose from without knowing more of exactly what you're looking for.

For a general strategy/simulation game with a strong historical basis, Rome Total War.

For a classic real time strategy game with a historical theme, Age of Empires 2.

For a large scale, micromanagement type of game, Civ III.

Call of Duty is a completely different type of game - regardless of how they advertise it as being like a simulation, it is an first person shooter, a pure action 'cinematic' game.

All in all, I'd call Rome Total War the best of the set, but they're really different types of games.

The only simulation on that list is Stronghold (and not a terribly authentic one at that). The best "strategy/simulation" games would all be wargames, and you have none of those listed.

Its really hard to chose between Civ 3 and R:TW, as they're pretty different games, but I chose R:TW because its newer. Civ 4 will be out soon. Buy that also.

Rome: Total War seems to have whimpered away from it's once VERY powerful status on the forums. What happened? The only other game who's GGFE died so sadly was Soldiers.

Foul.

You don't have Majesty as an option.

What?
Check out this poll: R:TW 8 Civ 3 4. That is a huge statement in and of itself.

This poll is worthless unless someone defines what is meant by simulation. How can Starcraft be a simulation of anything?

Its one thing to construct a poll of the best strategy or simulation but when I see "strategy/simulation" I take it that the poster wants the best game that has strong strategy elements and strongly simulates the period which is in the game.

This eliminates most fantasy and sci-fi genres entirely. I'm with Jeff V though in that none of the games listed have any strong simulation elements.

The best "strategy/simulation" games would all be wargames, and you have none of those listed.
As long as the definition of wargame is broad enough to include EU, I'm good with that.

I agree. The style of play in many of the games don't resemble each other enough for me to say that this is a better strategy game than that - they have different objectives.

Since you listed more than one Total War game as a candidate, can I assume you've tried one and liked it? If so, I personally have enjoyed Rome: Total War more than any of the others so I'd recommend that.

However, some of the others are bargain priced now: Civ 3, MTW, etc. so you could gamble a bit less $.

But, if you're looking for a strategy game recommendation in general, I might add to keep in mind Kohan 2 and Ground Control 2 also.

You don't have the two on the list that i'd pick..

Combat Mission Afrika Korps
Cossacks 2

Hands down, the best in my view. Imperial Glory with a patch or two would be added to that list - we'll see.

Rome came out in Sept, what the heck are you talking about?! Name the number of games that have active threads 8 to 9 months after release.

Usually I consider a good GGFE to have a nice long buzz. And at least a few mentions now and then in other threads.

I'm not saying I want 80% of 1st page threads to involve it... but I haven't even seen so much as an AAR. I mean shit, Dawn of War gets more mentions.

No, not really. I just went and checked the 3 most recent pages of "PC Games by Title". There are three RTW threads and one DoW thread.

Going further, a search in all forums on "RTW" reveals 30 threads since Jan 1, while a search on "DoW" reveals only 15 threads for the same time period.

Going even further, a search in "PC Gaming by Title" on "Rome" reveals 37 threads since Jan 1, while a search on "Dawn" reveals only 6 threads for the same time period.

Sorry, data trumps anecdotes every time :)

My favourite (I think everyone knows in this forum :) ) is hands down Soldiers. Was playing the coop with Turtle last night, even though I have done the particular mission a number of times (Theft) which involves stealing a train from the Germans with a rocket tank it still had some great moments.

To get the best out of it though MP Coop or PVP has to be done. It is also played very much controlling individual chracters in game (although you can be managing a number) and so is different from your list above.
