Re: Random randomness
The only reason 65 was picked as "retirement" age is so that Social Security thought it is enough to be self-sustaining.
Food for thought: average lifespan life expectancy in 1935 in the US is... 60 for male and 64 for female. (Social Security is founded in 1935)
http://mentalfloss.com/article/31014/wh ... ent-age-65...Roughly half of the existing private and state-run old-age pension systems, as well as the federal Railroad Retirement System, were using 65 as their retirement age, and the other half were using 70. It was practical for the federal plan to sync up with one half or the other, and the government’s actuarial studies suggested that starting the pensions at age 65 would allow for a system that could easily be sustained with moderate payroll taxes.

65 is no longer the retirement age for SS anyways. I wish both the government and advertisers would realize this.

Is Coldplay the new Nickelback? I'm kind of surprised how negative the reaction has been (that I've seen) to them being the halftime show act. Sure, they're not exactly edgy, and I'm not a massive fan, but they're music seems generally fine, and they have at least a few good songs. And it's not like the halftime show has exactly been booking Kanye or anything, so I'm not sure what people expect here.

Aw man. Now I'm gonna have to take the Monday after as a vacation day so I can be plastered by half time so I can loudly miss-sing "Yellow" when they play it. I'm pretty certain that's a law, somewhere.

Re: Random randomness
I was wondering why they wanted to put everyone to sleep with Coldplay, since their music is so boring. Then I heard their new song, which is some sort of dance pop atrocity, and I wasn't sure what they were going for.

People expect a glamorous show for Superbowl half-time. Coldplay is just...not it, unless they change their act around completely; a guy in grungy jeans and a t-shirt sitting at a piano doesn't really fit with the "Super Bowl 50" celebration extravaganza. Honestly, One Direction may have been a better choice for the ratings (apparently they are the new Backstreet Boys but with crazier fans?)El Guapo wrote:Is Coldplay the new Nickelback? Coldplay may be the official headliner, but for the past several years, NFL stopped relying on a single performer to bring in the ratings. They are rumored to have booked Bruno Mars and Beyonce as special guests (or maybe it's Coldplay that's in charge of finding their "special guests", not sure how this works).
But then again I'm biased, because for over 5 years now, I just can't bring myself to like most of Top 40 songs (and bands), they are so boring. I actively try to find new stuff that I might like, but most of it sounds like emo crap that played college radio stations in the 90s.

I so wish. I love me some 90s sounding emo crap. It's probably been close to two years since I was poking around looking for music. Maybe it's time try again.gilraen wrote: I actively try to find new stuff that I might like, but most of it sounds like emo crap that played college radio stations in the 90s.
The last I remember it was Taylor Swift, Boy Band of the moment, and the "All About the Bass" chick.

In what can only be described as both the best and worst casting decision since Natalie Wood, Kayla has been cast as Maria in the West Side Story opera scenes at her university.
I asked if the opera director actually SAW her during the audition and Kayla said yes but that the director said they can always get her a wig.
I'm not sure if I'm proud or mortified.

Frances Coldplay was a pretty well decorated Vietnam War helicopter pilot who got into a dark spiral of drinking and depression after the war. His life on the streets led him to the start of a rapping career, though, with Ain't No Thang being his breakout hit. He had moderate success in that realm, but his unexpected switch to country music philanthropy is what really made him a household name. Frances' music is on the mellow side, as said above, but songs like Hugs on a Truck have the kind of positive message they're probably aiming for this Super Bowl.Kraken wrote:I have no idea who Coldplay or any of those other people are, but I do know Kayla, so I can at least offer up three cheers for that news.

I'll uphold my lifelong tradition of not watching the Super Bowl again this year so I'm going to miss Mr. Coldplay's act, even if I do suspect that you're pulling my leg. Just spent an hour at Chili's being subjected to pop music. No idea who was behind any of it. It might have all been the same woman for all I could tell. At least I think it was a woman.

They can put on an arena show. I'm not a fan but I have no doubt the NFL, Pepsi and CBS can come up with something interesting. I don't like Katy Perry either but her halftime show impressed.gilraen wrote:People expect a glamorous show for Superbowl half-time. Re: Random randomness
My Criminal Procedure professor in law school (unsurprisingly) spent some of his earlier years doing criminal defense work. He told a story in class about one client that he was assigned. In that case the police officers stated in their report that as they approached the client he had thrown a bag of drugs at them. My professor basically rolled his eyes reading this and was like "yeah, right, you did an illegal search and this is your cover."Default wrote:One of my customers shot a robber to death in his living room. Oops.
He meets with the client and asks him about it, and the client says "oh yeah, I threw my drugs at them." So the professor asks, "Why?" The client says, "Everyone knows that if they find the drugs more than 10 feet from you they can't charge you for it."
The client got some bad news that day.

Got a new espresso machine. Spent some time this morning figuring out how to use it....and drank everything that I brewed, which is about 4 shots of espresso in varying iterations (not counting the 2 cups of coffee I drank before I even finished reading the instructions). I think I'm about to launch into the stratosphere.

One of our closest friends has persevered through a bumpy road to her opera dreams, but she finally got a great opera gig in San Francisco a few years ago and she's cloud 9 happiest person ever now. If talking to her might help Kayla motivationally or professionally at any point in time, just give a holler. This friend is incredibly nice and one of my favorite human beings.MHS wrote:Thanks.
