What MMOs offer free trials?

Post by DuckofDeath »

Probably because I'm stupid, I'm thinking of picking up an MMORPG for the summer between quarters (aside: does any other silly univ in the country use quarters besides OU?). I'm downloading the EQ2 trial now, but is there any others that offer this sort of trial? It seems like a smart idea, the classic "the first one's free" and before long you're pawning off everything to pay for your addiction.

Good question! Where are you downloading the EQ2 trial from?

I could have sworn I read in CGW that Anarcy Online is now free after buying the actual game and expansion packs. This is thanks to in game advertising. If this is true, I might check it out.

Anarchy Online is completely free but you don't get expansions. You can get expansions for free but then it's like $8 a month. Shadowbane has (had?) a free trial. Ultima Online might have. Those are the only ones I've tried.

Quite a few I think. UCLA and Northwestern off the top of my head.

Dark Age of Camelot also has a free trial. Gamespot Complete members have access to a free trial for City of Heroes, but I don't know if they plan to extend that to non-members or not.

Bah, I transfered to this university from another one that used the semester system, and this quarter system is just to steal a little bit more of my money. BAH I say.

You can download the EQ2 trial off the main web site, you download the front end then they "patch" the whole game to you. Pretty spiffy. I tried AO a long time ago and thought it was terribly boring.

Since I despised EQ1 (though I admit I played it for a couple of months just for lack of options), I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed the trial. The game is absurdly pretty at Ultra High graphic quality, I think it may be the best looking game out right now. The humans look weird and creepy, like corpses, but the non-human races are incredible. My tiger guy was neat. The gameplay seems better then Eq1 but it still seems like it's got a lot of boring standard DIKU stuff. I may end up in WoW or GW even if they don't offer a trial.

Yeah, they look like they were climbing the ugly tree and fell face first through all its branches.

There's an update coming sometime around the asian release of EQ2 that has new models, and they look -way- better... not sure when that is exactly, though.

I'm pretty sure Lineage 2 has/had a free trial going on. SWG has a free trial, too.

Fileplanet has links to download a bunch of trial Korean MMO's, too... I haven't tried them, but some are pretty popular.
