Cruz suffered some embarrassment Sunday when video surfaced of him attempting to hug and kiss his 7-year-old daughter Caroline while out on the Iowa campaign trail. Caroline was not terribly interested, creating a strange scene.

I'm no fan of Ted Cruz, but if I can't mortify my children in public by trying to kiss them when they want nothing to do with me, then the terrorists have won.

Wellll... I think that little meme crosses the line into making fun of the candidate's children, or something. It's an unfortunate private moment grabbed and repurposed for political points. (It's not like he was using her in an ad to ask Jesus to carpet bomb Muslims.)

I assume that even Ted Cruz's kids love their dad.

Possibly. Being used as a campaign prop? Less so. That gif is funny, though.

Oh, I thought it was some stranger's kid. I was SERIOUSLY creeped out for a minute.

His own daughter? Hell, I get that at least ten times a week from my 6 year old. :D

Obviously, the answer is more money.

Those per-capita costs have to do with post-1970 legal requirements (e.g. Title I, the ADA, etc) to educate even those with various deficits and disabilities, many of whom require specialist assistance and special facilities. Before the increases mapped in that chart, such kids were usually just washed out, kept home, ignored, or institutionalized.

Also, computers and other tech--absolutely necessary for educating kids into a world where they are necessary for most work--are bound to raise the costs of filling a school. In 1970 is was just books and desks.

So, yeah, education costs more. It also does more.

Cost of School: $166,773 / 13 years = $12,828 / year

Cost of full-day Private Daycare: $12,355 to $9,240 / year

So for $3,588 more per year, the school educates your child and takes on children with disabilities and developmental disorders.

It's not so expensive when you compare it to the alternatives. CATO Institute advances their agenda very effectively, and the % axis becomes extremely deceptive as it has no reference frame and puts test scores and compounding CPI together.

Normally I would assume so too, but everything I read these days indicates that Cruz is legendarily unlikeable.

My kids don't like when I work late at year end and tax season. I can only imagine their fury if I was on the campaign trail for years. Then again, I try hard to be the awesome parent and not Ted Cruz. His kids might actually be happy to see him leave.

You mean this Mario Woods?
The final chapter of Mario Woods’ life began when he slashed a stranger for no apparent reason and ended with him staring at the barrel of a San Francisco police officer’s gun and saying, “You better squeeze that ... and kill me.”

That’s the account provided by officers who were on the scene of an incident that has caused an uproar in the city and shaken both the Police Department and Mayor Ed Lee’s administration.

Within minutes of when he first defied police efforts to arrest him, Woods, 26, lay dead on a Bayview district sidewalk, shot by as many as 15 rounds fired by five officers.
...
The first beanbag round, shot from a 12-gauge weapon, “had no effect,” August’s partner wrote. Police then hit Woods with two more rounds, including one that struck his leg, causing the limp that Woods displayed in the videos of the police confrontation. Still, Woods wouldn’t drop the knife.

When a fourth beanbag was fired using a more powerful 40mm gun, the officer said, “The subject appeared to be stunned and crouched to one knee but still refused to drop his knife. ... (He) quickly regained his balance and stood back up.”

At that point, another officer tried to subdue Woods using pepper spray. He didn’t appear to react, the police accounts say.

“I then noticed a large crowd of people behind me,” said August’s partner. “I walked toward the crowd to advise them to back up when I saw the subject with the knife still in hand begin to walk toward the crowd.”

As Woods headed toward the bystanders, August tried to cut him off, police accounts say. In the videos of the shooting, he can be seen stepping into Woods’ path.

“I yelled, ‘Back up!’ as loud as I could at the crowd when I heard multiple gunshots,” August’s partner said. It was the sound of August and four other officers — Winson Seto, Antonio Santos, Nicholas Cuevas and Scott Phillips — firing their weapons.

I wasn't judging the validity of the case for or against Mario, only the use of the Super Bowl to promote their cause.

Didn't think you were. I hadn't heard of the case, so I ran down context and decided to share.

I'm a little surprised there has been no Beyonce side bar in the Superbowl thread. Sports radio decided that today was the day become all hot and bothered by it and that has now expanded to my FB feed... But then until this morning the only thing that struck me as interesting was it seemed like Cold Play was live while Bruno Mars and Beyonce were obviously recorded choreography.

Even this picture rolled off of me as an almost  when I saw it but then I was reminded of it this morning.

After it was explained to me by radio and social media feed that I am supposed be hot and bothered over all of the symbolism that I totally missed, all I can think of is, "Holy shit, that must have been cool to appreciate live if you saw it and I missed every last piece of it." That took some serious artistry and I am unusually dense when it comes to art.

I don't think I care for taking and making a political statement out of being a paid Superbowl guest but, wow, what a cool way to do it.

I apparently also missed that Cold Play was also looking making a civil rights statement for the gay community. Same critique, I guess only Coldplay was just rainbows whereas there was this whole thing Beyonce had going on.

*shrug*

I guess if you are to take a political message and specifically one about civil rights, "Believe in Love" is the proper conclusion.
