I'm attempting to put together an unofficial IT Three Margarita Lunch team building exercise for the Friday before Memorial Day. We all take half day vacations, go to lunch together, enjoy some adult beverages, and get the long weekend started early. Woe to the yet-to-be-hired IT support guy that will get to man the phones by himself on that day.

I've read this through like four times. I still have no idea what it means. I am assuming that this is because I don't work in IT and haven't been part of a corporate network since the 90s.

Seeing the thread about Chicago reminds me of a story a buddy of mine told me in the service.
When he got stationed to northern Maine (where I was at the time) he drove thru Chicago on the way here. He had been partaking his favorite weed at the time and as he drove down the freeway he was watching those dotted lines zipping down the road at an incredible pace all mellowed out, zip zip zip zip. Figured he must be doing 80-100 mph.
Suddenly the flashing lights of a cop car appear in his rearview mirror. He pulls over and the cop walks up to him and before he can say anything my buddy blurts out "I'm sorry for going so fast officer. I don't know what came over me."
The cop says "How fast do you think you were going?" My buddy says 80-100 mph.
The cop says " I pulled you over for going too slow. You were only doing 40."
My buddy spent the night in jail, paid his fine and made record time up here without partaking anymore.

Got what it takes to be a ninja assassin?

The Japanese prefecture of Aichi is looking for six fit young ninjas to join its team.

Opportunities for sleek, fast masters of espionage don't come along every day -- but this position offers a year-long contract and 180,000 Japanese Yen ($1,585) a month.

I'm sure there's some cultural myth that can tell me what it means when you find a dead opossum on the front steps to your house. No trauma, no signs of distress...just DOA.

Good to hear. Years ago, when I was fresh to the world of IT, I replied to an email by accidentally hitting Reply All. Unfortunately, the first line in my reply was a joking allusion to sex with small animals as the greeting (the originator of the email was a friend). Thankfully, most folks pretended they hadn't read it.

I'm having one of those weeks where I have to deal with a coworker who vacillates rapidly between expressing open contempt for me one minute, to being friendly the next. My boss still hasn't done his year end reviews....again. And his interaction with me is usually in the form of grunts and monosyllabic replies.

I've been told I'm reading into things by the HR person. But it's hard not to get discouraged in this kind of environment.

My annual review was due in September. Old boss promised me a certain percentage based on the prospective ratings and final approval. He delayed so long that I'm now under New Boss, and the HR process is moving to twice-yearly adjustments done company-wide. So there's the potential that my review period in April may result in my losing my 6mo overdue raise. And my title is still wrong.

Aye.

My review theoretically happens this month. The good news is that raises come along with the review. The bad news is that goal setting comes along with the review. I hate goal setting. I want to do less work, not more work. Under the current system there is no more efficiency to be gained and no more money to be squeezed out of processes. So goals = "How do I create more work for myself to benefit the company?"

Efficiencies. Increase results by decreasing actual work. Of course, that requires being able to get your head above water enough to not just hotfix everything.

I took the first really indepth look at my pay rate in the last three years. I knew my pay had gone down. I did not realize just how much it had gone down from where it was 3 years ago. Along side of the harsh reality that I need to focus a LOT more attention on my income as it no longer covers just me came the loss of any interest in continuing work for this district. :(

Pay freezes and "acceptable" decreases negotiated into our contracts have cost me way too much. Finding myself very bitter at this point.

Prices go up. Every year that you're not increasing as much or more, you're doing the same job with likely more work for even less that when you started.

Bargained employment is such a double-edged sword.

Even were inflation flat I'd be making less. My union actually bargained lower pay for all the teachers in the district. Due to where I'm at on the pay scale, I (and everyone hired the same year as me) have been hit for the tune of thousands of dollars a year due to this and the step freezes. Given my service time to the district I should be at the top of the pay scale. I'm barely half way there. I had thought I would not be able to leave the district due to pay level. It has gotten low enough due to the cuts and the freezes that that is not true. I may very well be better off accepting a lower (for now) rate from a district with a healthy financial situation and supportive community then staying here and making what I now make. Happier too.

A large local health system just released financials that show a $185m loss. Bond ratings took a huge hit. Debt defaults are a worry. They've announced 250 layoffs with plans for 500 more. Blame is largely on the shoulders of their finance Dept. My job is to make sure the same thing doesn't happen here. And they didn't bring me in because everything is perfect. No guts, no glory.
