Now, it is time to unify behind your party’s nominee.

There is no such thing as the perfect candidate!

What, are you really going to vote for the Democrat?

Don’t be ridiculous, a third party vote IS a vote for the Democrat!

You have voted in every election since you turned 18. You are NOT going to stay home this year!

Snippets of despairing conversations from Tuesday night?

Nope. These are just a few of the thousands of entreaties we have heard for the past 25 years for why so many conservative, freedom-loving patriots had to get behind so many of the atrocious and compromised candidates the Republican Party belched up for us.

And, time and again, they wore us down. They ground away our resistance. We caved. We surrendered. We voted for Mitt Romney.

It was such a detestable act that the only way we could screw up the appetite for it was to lie ourselves into thinking, really, this guy is GREAT! He is a turnaround artist! Total flip flopper, but he’s from Massachusetts! No passion or authenticity, but a really smart technocrat! He will get things done!

In the past 26 years, we have had just two Republican presidents. They were both named Bush.
Under the two of them collectively, they raised taxes, nationalized education, oversaw massive increases in federal spending, more than doubled the national debt and launched a trillion-dollar interventionist war that we ultimately surrendered and put it on our credit card.

This year, Republicans spent $100 million hoping to triple down on that Bush magic. They lost. And then they lost their party.

Now, it is time to unify behind your party’s nominee.

Truly, we know this is hard. We know better than any of you just how hard this is. We have done it so many times, we can hardly look at ourselves in the mirror.

But, we can tell you, it will get easier.

No, Donald Trump is not the perfect candidate. He may have a few slight flaws.

But he sure did beat the crap out of every one of the horribly flawed candidates you offered up.

There was Jeb! What a hot, fast, awkward fling that was!

You even tried co-opting the “tea party” by hiring Marco Rubio to be your seasonal worker. Only to learn later that Liddle Marco had committed absolute apostasy on the single most urgently important issue to us: illegal immigration.

Now it is all over. You can stop fighting now. There is only one thing left to do.

Shut up and get in line.

And, please, try to do it with good cheer and a smile on your face. We have a general election to win! You don’t want Hillary Clinton to win, do you?

He also just flipped on his opposition to raising the minimum wage. It's a pretty transparent attempt to woo Sanders voters who still see Clinton as the enemy.

I wonder how far a Republican can go towards socialism.

As far as is needed. It is after all just hope for change at this point.

We have all already seen how likely those changes really are. Over and over and over again.

It is not too hard to imagine him running a little left of center, or even to the left of Clinton, if that's what it takes to win. He's not really a Republican, after all. Of course, what he actually proposes (much less delivers) if elected is anyone's guess. We just have to trust that it will be GREAT.

Can we dispense with the cheap intellectually bankrupt seasonal fad of slinging accusations of racism around? I'm goddamn tired of it, even if I'm not a big Trump fan.
It's 109 first team All-Americans.
It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.
It's 24 Southeastern Conference Championships.
It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

Trump started his political life with birther fantasies and started his campaign by declaring war on brown immigrants. He celebrates his opposition to political correctness to such a degree that supporters feel comfortable yelling "White Power!" at his rallies. The core of his appeal is the promise to white Americans that they should "take their country back." He has been endorsed by white supremacists and by the fucking KKK, and he refuses to denounce them.

Yeah, there's racism there. He's earned the accusation. If you took it all out, there would be no Trump campaign.

Not bowing to political correctness? Huzzah!

The racist undertones in Trump's campaign have been well documented. If you want to deny that evidence, fine. But don't get outraged over something everyone but you and Rip recognize.

My father-in-law and stepdad came over for a cookout today, so of course the political tirades started. They have both jumped into the Trump camp completely, and believe that by picking a stellar VP and filling his cabinet with experts, he will shock everyone with how awesome a President he is. The Kool-Aid drinking has officially begun. To be fair, they have always been "anyone but Hillary," so the Republicans could have nominated a deformed goat fetus and they would have rallied behind it.

I know where MSD is coming from with the racism comments because I grew tired of it when it was applied to Republicans in general in previous elections with no real evidence. However, in this case Trump made his own bed. We live in a world where even an accidental slip of the tongue can brand you a racist, and here's a guy who not only passively condones the support of white supremacists, his statements are downright blunt.

I hate knee-jerk political correctness and use of the race card as much as anyone, but when the guy is eating a taco bowl and saying "I love Hispanics," even I cringe. I can't be part of a party that turns a blind eye to that sort of thing. I turned a blind eye to a lot of Republican social issues over the years, but I have to draw the line at blatant discrimination.

Long, unapologetically elitist argument says that democracies end when they become too democratic (because demagoguery). While I disagree with some of the guy's precepts, most glaringly that the US suffers a surfeit of democracy, he anticipates and addresses my objections and arrives at an accurate and chilling assessment. I found it disturbing and am interested in your opinions of his reasoning if you have the patience to read it critically.
Could it be that the Donald has emerged from the populist circuses of pro wrestling and New York City tabloids, via reality television and Twitter, to prove not just Plato but also James Madison right, that democracies “have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention … and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths”? Is he testing democracy’s singular weakness — its susceptibility to the demagogue — by blasting through the firewalls we once had in place to prevent such a person from seizing power? Or am I overreacting?
I'll feel better if you can show me where he's wrong.
Because the Republican party has gone completely off the rails. He would be a distant third in the Democratic primary.

That misses the point. The point is you either come together to support candidates or you don't. There is no exception that will do anything but make a mockery of the original sentiment.

If they wish to do this fine but the end result is next election if they manage to get a moderate candidate to win the nomination they will find no support from the remainder of the party. If they feel this way they should do the honorable thing and leave the party. I can at least respect that.

The remainder are doing the equivalent of drilling a hole upon the ship which they ride. It won't end well. Especially for them.
I can think of two exceptions. One is if the candidate is similar to one whose name starts with "H" and rhymes with Ritler. And the other is if the candidate reminds someone of Bobby Jindal. I can see the Republican frontrunner having similarities to both.

If Trump has this kind of unifying influence on us here at OO, can you imagine the miracles he's working elsewhere?

This might be the most partisan election cycle I've witnessed.

When democrat attack ads are made up entirely of Republican quotes with regard to their candidate, you know things are completely off the rails.

Everyone thinks they are living in uniquely difficult times, but this seems genuinely unique, from an objective viewpoint.

#NeverDefault
Donald Trump assailed the media on Monday for what he said was a misrepresentation of his comments on debt, rejecting the notion that he would have the United States default on his debt.

"I said if we can buy back government debt as a discount. In other words, if interest rates go up and we can buy bonds back as a discount, if we are liquid enough as a country we should do that. In other words, we can buy back debt as a discount," the presumptive Republican nominee said in a telephone interview on CNN's "New Day."

Those who said he wants to buy debt and default on it are "crazy," he added.

"This is the United States government. First of all, you never have to default because you print the money. I hate to tell you. So there’s never a default. But the point is it was reported in the New York Times incorrectly," he said, referring to a critical Times article that ran on Friday.

That article examined an interview Trump gave to CNBC last Thursday in which he suggested that he could reduce the national debt by persuading U.S. creditors to accept less than full payment.
So, if I understand it correctly, we secretly print more funds, don't tell anyone so that there's no currency adjustment on the international stage, and pay them off with a devalued currency that no one knows about?

Maybe we can just paint some lead bars in gold leaf and pay things off that way. Once we have the receipt, it's no longer our problem, right?
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I'm not quite sure I'd call it *that*, especially when you have many prominent Republicans who so far either have concerns about Trump, are saying they won't endorse Trump, won't vote for Trump, or, even further, they'll vote for Clinton. If it were most partisan, the Republicans would all strongly support the Republican nominee.

(Eg, Ryan, Bush Sr, W, Jeb!, McCain, Romney, Graham, Erick Erickson, PJ O'roarke, etC)

(Of course, it's possible that some/many/all of them will change their minds by Election Day, but it's definitely unusual.)

Everyone thinks they are living in uniquely difficult times, but this seems genuinely unique, from an objective viewpoint.
Absolutely.

Give him at least a year. His first priority is rebranding the White House. The Trump House will have a restaurant and day spa open only to the most exclusive members of the President Trump Club. Those who pay the 250,000 dollar a year membership fee. And while you're there, don't forget to pick up a pack of Trump Steaks. They are, without a doubt, the most flavorful, delicious steaks around!

(I will never, ever get tired of that scene in Trump Vader)
Nope, first priority will be to commission the Mount Rushmore head.
He's need to increase the size of Mount Rushmore first, in order to fit a head that size.

Jesus, Trump is acting like a child
"Well, this is a nice way to start off the interview. First of all, you should congratulate me for having won the race,” he said. “I thought, you know, at least there would be a small congratulations, but I'm not surprised with CNN, because that's the way they treat Trump. It's the, you know, they call it the Clinton network and I believe that. So, you know –”

“Wait. Hold on. Mr. Trump, I did congratulate you the last time we spoke. I said congratulations on winning the big race,” Cuomo responded.

“Thank you very much. So warm and so well-felt,” Trump said sarcastically.

Throwing a temper tantrum for not being congratulated again a week after his victory.

Or maybe it's just a way to avoid answering the question...
