Just recollecting the word "voluntold". Grawr.
wot?
To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?
Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Re: Random randomness
the United Way had its hooks into Cingular when I was there in a big way, even garnering scheduled meetings off the floor for the rank and file, as well as required action to refuse to donate. I was not a fan.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: Random randomness
I'm seething. It's probably a payscale-based decision, since none of us are management and whatever time one of us misses for volunteering (cough) is worth less than that of other employees, but it also feels incredibly sexist since we're all women.
We're also incredibly backlogged because of a bunch of technical changes to our work environment over the last several months and we're busy. There's no escaping that.

Re: Random randomness
Well, it was not my name pulled, and I did just have a brief chat with my supervisor about it. She thinks it was innocuous enough, and the upper tier pulled two branches at random after not getting any real volunteers to step forward.
Lots of people have grumbles about the United Way, but that's how government and big corporate tends to show how civic-minded they are. What a crock.

If I'm getting paid to do it, I suppose I wouldn't care. As a coerced volunteer I wouldn't be particularly helpful but I wouldn't care.
However, as a salaried employee who is not going to have the rest of his workload lightened to take on the additional responsibility, I'd have a huge problem. I'd even have a problem if they offered me a paid incentive to increase my workload. (See my objection to wage based goal setting that is going to get my in trouble in 2017)

Re: Random randomness
United Way is not a monolithic entity - each chapter is run independently. Some are good and some are bad. My local one is decent (by my estimation - gets 4 stars from Charity Navigator) and I'm on the company's fundraising team and even led our drive one year. Personally I think if you have the time it's better to donate to each charity individually, but I can understand the benefit of their oversight and culling.

Re: Random randomness
At my office they push UW as well. They suggest everyone to donate "your fair share". I will not donate to this charity. Who says what my fair share is? How is "my fair share" not my money to use? I donate to Child's Play every year. I know where that money goes and I trust the CP people and believe in their cause. I do not trust UW and do not think they are a better charity. You get an extra vacation day if you give "your fair share", I can do without. We also have to go to a meeting every year about all the good that they do. My manager also suggested that I do give because it is looked at by the higher ups to see who gave and who did not (I am not sure that is even legal), but is is still my decision. I will not donate to UW ever.

At my office, you can designate the charity to which your money goes when you donate through United Way, and it makes it easy to get whatever corporate matching is done.

I have one of my old college roommates coming up for like 3 days to help me with some framing and sheetrock work in my basement. This is a guy I've known for like 24 years now, which is totally insane considering all the beer and fat sandwiches we all used to routinely shovel in our faces. Anyway, in the last two years he has gone vegetarian and he now feels better, he's lost weight and it's a choice that's really working for him. Anyway, I'm worried that in the span of 72 hours of hanging out he's going to revert back to a meat-eating caveman. Should be interesting after a few beers...

Tender Hooks are those big hooks cadavers of beef are hung on, and they HURT a lot, making you quiet tender.
Hence the phrase: On Tender Hooks - means you are hurtin' for some relief to some painful situation.

Re: Random randomness
I always thought it was a nautical reference. Something to do with a ship tender...possibly related to Roni.
Most. Random. Thread. Ever.I awoke and looked for my monarch family, but I couldn't find them. I searched for days, but no sign of them. It was like losing my parents all over again, only much quieter. So I wandered to the nearest highway, took the first bus to New York, and claimed a fat inheritance. It was only later that I learned that monarchs migrate south for the winter .. here ... to Mexico. Oh, Tenderoni, that's the only real reason I've come to Mexico: to find my foster parents. My big plan, all that work I've had you doing -- it was just an excuse. Do you hate me now?

I have an old friend coming to town tomorrow. He wants to meet up at a bar before he goes to see Phish. Of course I agreed and broke out my drinking pants and organized the crew. But another friend just told me the guy is on the wagon. He calls him every time he fucks up and drinks.
So I'm thinking of taking him on a tour of Italian beef dives in the area instead. If he's gone veg...I guess we go shopping for new pants?

Did you know (in California anyway) if you are drunk it is illegal to sleep it off in your car because you "could" drive it at some point. Allegedly the thing to do is hide your keys in the bushes so you can tell the cops you lost them.

I thought that was the law everywhere. You can't be "in control" of a motor vehicle while drunk. I could see the bush thing working to avoid conviction, though I bet you'd still be arrested.Jaymann wrote:Did you know (in California anyway) if you are drunk it is illegal to sleep it off in your car because you "could" drive it at some point. I think it's not just California. It would also help if you were in the back seat, not the front. In the end it'll come down to how much of a jerk the cop happens to be.Jaymann wrote:Did you know (in California anyway) if you are drunk it is illegal to sleep it off in your car because you "could" drive it at some point.
