To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

Re: Random randomness
The new concept restaurants will ditch the chain’s fluorescent lighting and neon purple signage for a more grown-up look. It’s less about convenience and more about ambiance. Taco Bell is ditching the bolted-down tables and chairs for friendlier group seating that doesn’t feel like typical fast-food dining and opting for touches like cushioned furniture and options for “al fresco” dining.
There are also electrical outlets available for customers who want to plug in their laptop and use the free WiFi found at some Taco Bells, or just charge their phone.
“Consumers told us they wanted an environment where they could sit and stay a while,” said the concept development dude tells National Restaurant News.

We have a Wendy's restaurant close by, that has remodeled a couple of years ago and went "upscale" (although nothing like that Taco Bell in the picture). They now have a seating area with couches and armchairs, a big-screen TV in the wall and a fireplace. I still like Taco Bell better than Wendy's though.

I hate Hate HATE IMs!
Fuck this shit! They are the worst possible way to do non critically time sensitive business and using them for business is not critically time sensitive is the worst.
I don't have time to drop everything for you sending one sentence thoughts on a work topic that doesn't get the to point and doesn't ever actually set an expectation.
Sit down with your damned email. Compose your thoughts. Put them all together. Make sure you set an expectation in the email. I will then set a priority to your need and address it when I can.
There needs to be a rule that states all IMs are optional and why the hell is it that every one who insists on using them doesn't know how to get to the point? I don't want to hold to one sentence pieces of conversation while you figure out how the hell to ask me for something. You need something. I don't work for you. I am busy. The onus is on you to express what you need.
I'd love to say I feel better, but I don't. It is now officially time to no longer drop anything for IMs. Or simply start answering with "no time." I'm gonna take shit for it but I'm so done.

I hate IMs. I never used to keep my IM client open unless we were on a conference call with a customer and needed a way to communicate, but my current boss' boss likes us to have our IM client open in case he needs anything.

My only issues with IMs is that we have restrictions set to prevent passively saving IM history. I don't remember anything that happens in IM.

At least in my world, the quality of emails aren't much better than IMs. People seem to think it's more efficient to hastily write a brief incoherent mind dump instead of taking the extra 30 seconds it would take to write a clearly worded email. Instead of one exchange we end up with a half dozen further emails back and forth as I try and decipher what the original request is.

I changed that shit to save everything. We don't have restrictions but our default settings turned that off. Everything that happens, happens in writing and I save everything that happens in writing. We live by IM. It's taking over our corporate life. No one picks up phones any longer, almost every conversation starts with IMs. My entire team is remote from me, so it's really the only way we can function.

We have it too. I like it, but it's only for informal communications. Anything you need documented goes through email. Saves a lot of phone calls too.

Skype for Business (the rebranded Lync) has taken over most communication within our company over the last 3 years or so. The downside is that I often end up being asked to troubleshoot IT problems via text rather than voice. And that makes for a slower process most of the time.

Re: Random randomness
It's a constant barrage for me of I need I need I need and it always plays out the same, where a simple request that did not need to be addressed immediately now has to be addressed immediately and the simple request becomes a long dragged out distraction of one liners that don't adequately explain the other person's expectation.
And yeah that's how internal business is being migrated to over the last three years or so.
And I never get a chance to get into a concentration mode. I have large projects that require me to tune out the world to organize. Usually by doing code for dummies. But it's like the phone is ringing every five minutes. Only it's not the phone. It's an intercom where someone just busts in starts talking and you don't even have the luxury of showing them your work to respond with "Can't you see I'm working on a project?" And so I set my status to busy or away but no one cares. They just send messages anyway.
Today, I finally had it and exited Lync and am letting "missed conversations" go to my mail. I got to work on customer project for 30 minutes uninterrupted until just a few minutes ago where I got a call from someone annoyed that I did not respond to his IM. It felt glorious. A half an hour to concentrate on something. I kicked out a whole document. One of six for which an external customer is ready to kick my ass over.
