You know, I miss the old Gone Gold/OO gaming challenges. We did them every once in a while back in the good ol' days. We'd all pick a game, then play through it providing level-by-level commentary and discussion as we went. It was always It usually worked better with games that had some variation in gameplay, but weren't open world (Thief II was a great one), but it was a lot of fun.

So, what does everyone do for filler on the PC? You know, when you have 20 minutes to kill, which isn't enough to get into a serious game, but is too much time to do nothing.

On a slightly more serious note, I often head over to OneMoreLevel.com. I usually end up playing for more than 20 minutes, but it's more mindless.

My go-to is Bubble Shooter. Though sometimes I mix it up with the Bubble Spinner. I'm also partial to Castle Wars. I used to like Dice Wars, but now that I can't figure out how to turn off the music I play it less.

Lately it has been Atom Zombie Smasher (also has filled this role many times in the past, to the tune of 34+ hours according to Steam and I would guess it is probably closer to double that) or Qvaridga.

Thanks, all. And it isn't so much "I don't want to play for an hour, what can I quit after 20 minutes" as it is, "I have to leave to get the kids in 20 minutes, what can I do that I can just quit and walk away from." Or "Company is due at 1, it is 12:40, I'm bored, they may be early, they may be late, but I don't want to be rude by making them watch me finish a quest/fight/match."

Then definitely avoid Hearthstone. My wife would rather eat a cold dinner than leave a match before the end.

Luckily, she knows this is true, so she won't be able to give me too much grief when she reads it... 8-)

For the kids... Play longer than 20 minutes randomly. Make kids wait and wonder if you are coming. builds character.
For Company is due. Wear head phones to block them out. it's what I do.

Yeah, a few months ago in order to play Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance on a Win98 virtual machine.

I installed Win98SE on vmplayer, which doesn't have DirectX support, so I couldn't run the W95 version of Birthright but I was able to play the DOS version. I was hoping that a W98 VM would be a good solution for playing old W95/98 games, but the lack of DirectX support pretty much nixed that idea.

Wunderbar! Steam just pushed out an update that made the client decide that my entire library is not installed. Thanks gaben!

Update: I ran through the Steam "flushconfig" procedure, and that seems to have corrected whatever went awry. Phew! Manually going through and "reinstalling" each game to make Steam see the local files would have been annoying.

Steam may go through a quick check of the directory the first time you load up a game after doing that. At least that's what happens when you point Steam at a new library that already contains games. It picks up and lists the games correctly, but doesn't actually do the setup until you run each game. Not a full, brand new install-type setup, but it runs through some sort of check list dealie.

That game was always of interest but detailed reviews always found too many issues for me to take the plunge.

It's a great game. I got it years back and patched it with a high-res patch and it worked beautifully! I didn't really have many problems as most of them had been worked out by then, mostly via the community patches. It's matured a lot since its original release.

I actually felt the original two Fallouts had more bugs on modern machines compared to it.

For the record when I say "issues" I really mean game play problems/balance issues/poorly thought out/working mechanics.

I don't recall what the game was like in terms of bugs.

I didn't really have any issues with the game, but it did have pretty exploitable mechanics - like Haste and respawns. There was one point in the game where you find an open portal that lets piles of nasties through, and if you've got mountains of Haste on you, it's possible to kill them all over and over and over and over for a lot of experience, which simplifies other things later. It does eventually run dry, but it takes a long time. Haste remains a very potent spell, though, simplifying a lot of really hard fights.

Just installed the Perfect General Internet Edition again. Still works fine. I did put a lot of time into the original. At the time I could choose between Panzer General and the Perfect General and chose the later. I was never sorry.

For about the last 9 months or so it's been Gems of War. It's on mobile and Steam, haven't paid a dime and it's easy to drop if you need to.
