Re: The Art of the Donald Trumpocalypse
Trump, seeking GOP unity, has tense meeting with Senate Republicans
Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) left the meeting worried about Trump’s grasp on the basics of the Constitution. At a lunch with reporters afterward, he recalled that the candidate did not seem to know what he was promising to defend.
“I wasn’t particularly impressed,” said Sanford. “It was the normal stream of consciousness that’s long on hyperbole and short on facts. At one point, somebody asked about Article I powers: What will you do to protect them? I think his response was, ‘I want to protect Article I, Article II, Article XII,’ going down the list. There is no Article XII.”
Trump said at the meeting that he has yet to attack Flake hard but threatened to begin doing so. Flake stood up to Trump by urging him to stop attacking Mexicans. Trump predicted that Flake would lose his reelection, at which point Flake informed Trump that he was not on the ballot this year, the sources said.
Asked in a Senate hallway later about his exchange with Trump, Flake declined to elaborate.
“No, I’ll just leave it,” he told reporters, adding “my position remains, I want to support the nominee. I really do. I just can’t support him given the things that he’s said.”

When asked by House Republicans about his problem with Latino support, Trump reportedly said, "The Hispanics love me!" and dismissed the issue.
That flavor of bullshit might play on Twitter, but everyone in the room knew it was nonsense. Not very reassuring to a roomful of people facing re-election with Trump at the top of the ticket.

More on Jeff Flake, who I'm normally no fan of, but who occasionally gets one right.
The Washington Post reported that when the Arizona Republican stood up and introduced himself, Trump said, "You've been very critical of me."
"Yes, I'm the other senator from Arizona — the one who didn't get captured — and I want to talk to you about statements like that," Flake responded, two Republican officials told the Post.
Flake was referring to Trump's comments from roughly one year ago when he questioned whether Sen. John McCain of Arizona was a war hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War. Trump said he preferred people who weren't captured.

Trump releases a fairly reasonable statement after Dallas and now surrogate and potential running mate Newt Gingrich comes out and says if you are a normal white American, truth is you don't understand being black in America. WTF, is the presidential pivot actually happening?

Re: The Art of the Donald Trumpocalypse
Can you imagine? Newt Gingrich led the Bill Clinton impeachment. Chris Christie wants to prosecute Hillary Clinton. Trump may be dumb, but he is cunning and knows how to feed the crowd.
I have followed Newt since 1984. I went into tax law because he proposed switching payroll taxes for "flat" VATs. He's a policy wonk with no moral scruples or charisma whatsoever. He's the original bomb-thrower who destroyed civility and turned Congress into its current hyper-partisan state. Newt's perfect for the VP role that Trump needs. And they even both have a terrible record with women.

Trump defends parts of Constitution that don't exist:
http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/08/politics/ ... ion-gaffe/
http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/08/politics/ ... ion-gaffe/
Then again, maybe he has plans for expansion, beautiful wonderful plans."I wasn't particularly impressed," Sanford told reporters after Thursday's meeting at an event. "I think it was the normal stream of consciousness that's long on hyperbole and short on facts. At one point there was mentioned -- somebody asked about, you know, Article I powers and what would you do to protect them and you know, I think his response was 'I want to protect Article I, Article II, Article XII -- go down the list.' As we both know there is no Article XII."
Trump's answer came in response to a question from a House Republican about whether Trump as president would defend the prerogatives of Congress that are laid out in Article I of the Constitution. The issue is highly important to lawmakers who are frustrated by the powers of the presidency, which are defined in Article II of the Constitution but that have expanded in recent years by the increased use of executive authority.
There are a total of just seven articles to the Constitution although there are many more amendments to the founding document, which could be what Trump was referring to accidentally.
When Trump made his comments "a number of people looked around at each other at that point with a little bit of a quizzical or curious eye," Sanford told CNN Friday.

Re: The Art of the Donald Trumpocalypse
The worst news I've seen this week is Trump's response to Dallas and the most recent BLM marches.
At an Indiana rally, he said this:
Trump's campaign requires the specter of race war to succeed. We're going to be getting more of this poison from him.
At an Indiana rally, he said this:
There is no evidence whatsoever that anyone has called for a "moment of silence" for the killer (or at least no one involved with these protests). But notice the main point, which is how he's characterizing the BLM protests as support for the Dallas shooter. It's revolting.Donald Trump wrote:“The other night you had 11 cities potentially in a blow-up stage. Marches all over the United States—and tough marches. Anger. Hatred. Hatred! Started by a maniac! And some people ask for a moment of silence for him. For the killer!”

I'm not sure whether I was more amused by:El Guapo wrote:Just a reminder that Donald Trump's campaign is still a garbage fire.
or alarmed by:n other garbage-fire news, the Trump campaign continues to barely exist. Sam Stein and Elise Foley attempted to contact the Trump campaign in all 50 states:
A few of the state operations had no websites or no numbers listed. Many of the other numbers didn’t work. When we left voicemails, we didn’t get callbacks.
On only six occasions did someone actually answer the phone. And in several of those instances, the person who picked up explained that a physical office would be opened up only after the convention.
Crazy times we live in.Also, Breitbart News reports that “Bikers for Trump” will patrol the streets in Cleveland during the Republican convention. “Bikers for Trump aren’t going to Cleveland looking to cause trouble,” the right-wing site assures readers, “but will be on hand to counter thousands of professional leftwing agitators planning to disrupt the Republican nominating convention.” So relax — there’s no way a riled-up paramilitary gathering of rabid bikers could react in any way that reinforces middle America's concerns about the Republican nominee.
And sad, because +1 to Holman's post above. Divisive vitriol it to the Trump campaign what oil is to a combustion engine.
