Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
I saw my first Clinton ad last night during the Convention. I don't watch much traditional tv so just haven't seen any. I thought the ad with children watching Drumpf saying outrageous things was pretty effective. That said it was repeated several times, I would have expected to see more message diversity at this stage.

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
Gotta save the ad production money for the late game. We've got 3.5 months left. Spending money on people watching the Republican convention isn't exactly playing to undecideds.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
The Week
It apparently takes people over half a century before they begin to care about the Democratic or Republican National Conventions — or at least about watching them on TV. Nielsen numbers show that for night one of the Republican Convention this year, 14 million of the 23 million people who tuned in were older than the age of 55.
Historically, this trend tends to be true, with most of the viewers of the last three conventions belonging to the 55+ crowd. The numbers came close to being even at the 2012 Democratic convention, when 50 percent of the audience was 55 or older, The Washington Post reports. One exception to the norm was 2008, when Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination; 57 percent of the audience watching was under 55 that year.
Regardless of the numbers tending to skew older, Americans typically love their convention coverage — a report in 2012 found that about two-thirds of Americans watched at least part of the 2008 convention, rivaling Olympic coverage. "It really is a nonsense argument to say no one watches the conventions," University of Oklahoma professor Jill Edy told USA Today. "People who are politically interested already — for them, this is appointment television."
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Reuters has a large article on what few undecideds there are.

I get their point, but I'm not sure how much relevance I'd give age divisions from traditional TV in the age of the internet.Isgrimnur wrote:

Thanks for posting that because I cannot for the life of me understand the undecided. I can understand "disgusted and not voting" but undecided? It boggles the mind. This quote from one of them, however is very telling:Isgrimnur wrote:Reuters has a large article on what few undecideds there are.

Immigrants are like carnies. They are here to steal your children in the night and raise them as one of their own.Smoove_B wrote:Dude has 3 kids under the age of 6 (well, one yet to be born) and his biggest concerns are immigration and national security?

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
A colleague mentioned illegal immigration to me today. I countered by asking how much impact it had on his daily life, and he was honest enough to admit that it was none at all. He countered by saying it still wasn't something that should be ignored. I advised him that it was not the position I was taking.

Idly wondering if there's any precedent for announcing one's running mate at the convention. That would draw more interest than doing it over the weekend.

So none recently, but it would hardly be ground-breaking. I wonder why it went out of fashion. Seems like a logical convention function.Defiant wrote:Dan Quayle (88), George H. W. 1. It might be released beforehand to try to lengthen the media attention (Announcements before the conventions were generally 2-14 days before the convention). OTOH, it would be kind of awkward to release it during (or right before) the other party's convention.
2. It might be harder to keep it a secret nowadays?
3. A few of the ones above occurred when it wasn't 110% clear who the nominee would be (I'm thinking R64, D72, R76)

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
If ever in recent history the best strategy is to take the high road and not feed the troll it is now. Since Drumpf has no actual content, let him keep screaming to his heart's content. If she is smart, HRC will have only one debate then focus on women, Latinos and educated people. There is no chance of taking any of Drumpf's supporters, so she needs to focus on getting out the vote.

For the love of all that is holy, Strident Hillary needs to stay away from the convention at all costs. If that ack-Ack Mars Attack speaking cadence shows up, I will lose all hope.Jaymann wrote:If ever in recent history the best strategy is to take the high road and not feed the troll it is now.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

I watched a bit of the RNC out of morbid curiosity, but I'm not sure I can watch any of the DNC.

In any debate(s), they will be talking past one another. She will destroy him with reason and facts and he will destroy her with ridicule and accusations, and each side will congratulate itself on its great victory. They just don't speak a common political language.Jaymann wrote: If she is smart, HRC will have only one debate then focus on women, Latinos and educated people. I haven't read up on him yet. First impression is that she doubled down on her own boring safe establishment vibe, making this election a clear referendum on the status quo.

Yes, floppy disks are still used at our nuclear bases—but there’s a good reasonRip wrote:It isn't a good excuse but I do have to acknowledge how far behind some government IT systems are.
Want to launch a nuclear missile? You'll need a floppy disk.
That's according to a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), which found that the Pentagon was still using 1970s-era computing systems that require "eight-inch floppy disks."

From what I've read, Tim Kaine is a safe but smart pick. He's a moderate that seems to be pretty even-keeled. I'm generally a Virginia fan - it's a state that more or less always seems to have its act together.

From what little I've read, he seems to meet my top three priorities when it comes to Veep pick:
1. Qualified
2. Capable
3. Qualified and Capable

Re: The Hillary Clinton thread
From what I just read this morning, Kaine almost seems like an anti-Trump, although he's much more likely to appeal to moderates than progressives.

Just saw his speech. I wasn't a huge fan of the pick when I heard about it last night but he more than won me over. Seems like a genuinely warm and decent fellow with a strong record of civil rights. He isn't flashy in the least, which is actually really refreshing in this election. All in all, his speech made me a bit more optimistic after Thursday night's nightmare fuel.YellowKing wrote:From what I've read, Tim Kaine is a safe but smart pick. I just watched it too, that was a pretty incredible speech. I'm curious to see how Trump will attack him. The only angle I can see is the 'He's coming for your guns' nonsense.Captain Caveman wrote:Just saw his speech.
