concerts....who you seeing?

through some coincidence i found out this thing called The Security Project was playing last night (second show added because the first one sold out) and it sounded intriguing. the band included Jerry Marotta (of Peter Gabriel's band back in the day) and Trey Gunn (King Crimson) and one of Shriekback's guitarists and some other people i didn't know, covering mostly songs from the first four Peter Gabriel albums. their vocalist had a preeeetttty good impression of Gabriel's tonality, range and expression. needless to say the musicianship was impeccable. it's a low bar, but easily the best 'cover band' i've ever seen. they stated the intention of this was to keep these songs alive, since Gabriel's not playing a lot of them live anymore. samples

Robert Smith has always had that creepy something about him and their music that intrigued me.

Touring in support of the (forgettable) Wild Mood Swings album in 1996, I caught the Cure playing a stadium show at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver. Including three encores, they played for three straight hours and it was an incredible show. They had a dystopian amusement park theme on the stage, and the majority of their setlist was straight from the eighties. The third encore was 27 minutes of A Forest, an album track which never stood out as exceptional to me. They freaking shredded that song and now it's one of my favorites.

Anyone on the fence for going to see The Cure in concert should absolutely go for it (even in a less-than-intimate venue).

I saw them on that same tour in 1996 at a smallish theater. This time around they're playing the local outdoor "shed" venue - not nearly as nice a place for a show but I'm really looking forward to it.

The Cure played Portland last night for the first time since I saw them in 1996. They did three encores and played for three hours including a few songs they rarely do live like "Burn" and "The Snakepit"

It was pretty amazing.

Tool just announced an October show. They weren't terribly impressive the last two times I saw them, but I figured I might give it a shot and see if their live show has improved.

$92.50 (before service fees) for floor seats.

Not a fucking chance.

Never was a big fan of Tool. They have some stuff I like, but not enough to go see them live...especially at those prices.

Little bit of both, Rage and Public Enemy.

I think they've had just a couple of surprise shows in LA last week to gauge interest. Needless to say, it went over big.

If you do some YouTube searching, they did No Sleep till Brooklyn as well.

Should be epic, assuming you like Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, and/or Rage Against the Machine. The fact I love all three is a dream come true for me.

And in classic RATM, they will be in Cleveland playing a show during the Republican National Convention.

James Taylor is at the Tucson Arena tomorrow night, following my home show. The rep from one of the radio stations that sponsors my show offered us a pair of tickets. I guess we should go. tlr is a lot more excited about it than I am.

Not a fan of James Taylor at all myself.

On a different note, I bought tickets to see Michael McDonald in August. My favorite voice in all of music perhaps. I looked at his recent setlist and he's performing some really damn good classics I can't wait to hear.

Used to be a bigger fan, so I've seen him a few times. Boring as hell every single time. Don't go tired, you'll never stay awake.

I admittedly dozed through part of the first set, but did see most of the show. While it didn't make me a convert, I give him credit for being engaging, personable, and giving the fans what they wanted, including a selfie opportunity between sets.

He had a good band with him, and featured the always amazing Arnold McCuller, who I'd previously seen backing Ry Cooder.

They've started announcing bands for the next 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. Operation "Talk Mrs. Skinypupy into letting me go again" commences immediately. The lineup already looks amazing...and it's just the first 15'ish bands (out of 60)

Yes it will be a tough one for sure at the end of the concert. Saw them way way back at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach for $20. There were only about 100 people there!

When we were at the Filipino fest a few months ago, we were handed an advertisement for a Jessica Sanchez (American Idol loser several seasons ago). My wife and I both like her, so I figured I'd look into it when it gets closer to the late October date.

In a Filipino restaurant the other day, they had a poster with ticket prices listed. $158! Ummm....does she go home with me for that price?

Last night a former colleague posted on FB that Blue Oyster Cult is playing a free festival in Skokie. Skokie is also where the Filipino fast food joint my wife likes is located. It seems we are going to Skokie tonight.

The first time I saw Blue Oyster Cult was during their Cultosaurus Erectus tour. That show was good, I expect tonight to be not good. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I think you will be. Musically, they haven't lost a beat. They still have a couple of the most important original members, and the replacements are all are excellent, especially Kasim Sulton, the bass player.

Wednesday night we went and saw the current version of Yes on their 'Album Tour' at a lovely old theatre called the Paramount in downtown Denver. A good time was had by all, young and old.

Saw Melvins last Saturday and had a great time.

The past couple years they have had Jeff Pinkus, formerly of Butthole Surfers (my ALL TIME favorite band) playing bass and when I saw he wasn't on stage I was disappointed. But then I looked closer at who was up there...holy shit, that's Jeff McDonald!

Jeff and his brother Steven are the core members of Redd Kross, a band they formed when they were teenagers. I used to be SO into Redd Kross from about '87 to '93.

It was good to see Jeff. He added a lot to the Melvins sound, he's a kick-ass bassist and a great singer. They covered a Redd Kross song, "Janis, Jeanie and George Harrison" but kinda Melvins-ized it.

I swear I was the only person in the club who knew who he was. All my friends were bummed Pinkus wasn't there but I schooled 'em on who Jeff was. Everybody came back to our place after the show and I made them listen to Redd Kross the rest of the night.

Dylan's coming to Phoenix and I'm not even on the fence about going. Tickets are $150-$500. Even nosebleed seats would be $400-$500 once you figure in gas and a motel room.

Problem is, odds are 50/50 on him either being great or really, really sucking. With Dylan it's always a crap shoot.
