There's probably also some loophole in the legalese about the fact that they're not getting paid to run 'promotions' for their own shows. If it isn't commercial, is it a commercial?stessier wrote:I think they can get away with it because a commercial is trying to sell you something. Just doesn't seem legit. In some markets, this could be constituted as bait-and-switch, offering one service and delivering on another, all the while, pocketing more money.

Buh-bye, Bryan Fuller!! Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised to see this killed off before even premiering.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Being on a CBS network was kind of a bad sign, really. Star Trek doesn't really fit the network's image or feel right now, anyway. Look at Supergirl, it was pretty good for what it was trying to do, but it was out of place. Its move to CW makes sense, with the other superhero shows to provide a larger world to play in. Star Trek doesn't make sense on there, either, especially with the much larger budget.

Guess this means one less show for me to have to pay attention to. Now I can focus on American Gods and Amazing Stories.

No worries folks! Fuller may be stepping down, but Variety reports that Akiva Goldsman will soon be joining Star Trek: Discovery in a "top creative role."
You remember Goldsman... he's the guy who wrote Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin movie and the 1998 remake of Lost in Space. Oh, and he also produced that screen classic, Paranormal Activity 4! So all is well!
(In fairness, Goldsman also won an Oscar for adapting the A Beautiful Mind screenplay -- so there is that.)

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Ok I get why people are complaining about the "commercial free" service having promo breaks but after reading this, is it really a big deal?
So 10% of CBS's streaming shows will have 30 seconds of tv show promos every half hour? Yeah thats a 1st world problem if I ever hear one.The “promotional interruptions” will be brief, but un-skippable, promos — 15 seconds at most, and no more than two promos per half-hour — for other CBS shows. They’ll show up in about 10 percent of CBS’ episodes
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Losing Bryan Fuller is a pretty big deal. He at least brought a bit of integrity, vision and trek expertise to the new show, but if he's leaving before it even airs, it feels to me like there may be more things going on behind the scenes that point to it being doomed. Not a very good sign.

Ugh. Akiva Goldsman is just terrible at genre stuff. He's got some decent dramas under his belt - the aforementioned A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, The Client, A Time to Kill - all decent. I don't really blame him for The Da Vinci Code because that book was crap to begin with.
But the genre stuff - Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, I, Robot - all garbage. He's also the reason I'm really pessimistic about the Dark Tower adaptation.
He's like an anti-J.J. Abrams.

Seems pretty simple to do.
Sooo, if you can fake what country you are in, you can watch this. And here is a link as to how to do this:Following its May 2017 premiere on the CBS Television Network, all episodes of Star Trek: Discovery will be available in the U.S. exclusively on CBS All Access. Continuing the worldwide appeal of the franchise, each episode of the series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere, presented on Netflix in 188 countries and through Bell Media platforms in Canada.

Actually, it was announced long time ago that the female lead of Star Trek Discovery will NOT be the captain.
4. Asked about the lead character’s rank, Fuller said, “Lt. Commander … with caveats.” Fuller said that the lead character’s most important traits include “a strength and sensitivity and an amusing neurosis that goes with exploring space.” When asked why he chose not to make the lead a captain, Fuller noted “We’ve seen six series from captains’ points of view, so to see a character from a different perspective, who has a different dynamic with the captain, with subordinates,” was something he was eager to explore.

Its delayed again. Why it may even start filming 'soon'ish.
Originally planned to premiere in January 2017, 'Star Trek Discovery' was delayed until May late last year, and now that date has slipped again. In an announcement today from CBS, the network has confirmed that the series will be "flexible on a launch date if it's best for the show", but that filming is finally set to kick off next week.

Seems like total shit to me and Im a huge Trek fan. Looks like they simply mishmashed crew together to be PC for everyone, a black, a white, a Asian, a gay , a Klingon, a alien....all we need now is a Muslim(which is rumored) and a midget,,,ohhhh short person...vertically challenged. My wife hates it when I say that.

Unlike the Original Series, which had a black, a white, an Asian, a Russian, and an aiien.Daehawk wrote:Some character info

Or Picard's crew, which had a black, a white, a Klingon (and Asian support characters.)
Or DS9, which had a black, a white, an Asian support character, a bunch of aliens, and touched on homosexuality for the first time in Trek.
Or Voyager, which had an Asian, a white, a Klingon, an alien, a Native American, and a black alien.
Or Enterprise, which had a black, a white, an Asian, and an alien.
The only thing that hasn't been well represented in Trek is gay characters, and that was because most of the Trek was made before that was allowed (although DS9 had a hugely controversial episode in which Dax was involved with a woman.) In fact, one of the things that makes Trek stand out so much is that they push controversial social issues. TOS had the first interracial kiss on TV, a black woman in a position of respect, and an Asian and a Russian during the heart of the cold war. Those things get called out as the best qualities of Roddenberry's message in every Star Trek documentary or discussion I've ever seen.
So, what was the complaint again?

I have a hard time believing that they'll actually manage to come out with anything resembling a TV season. Maybe 5-6 episodes tops, by the time it's all said and done. Fewer, if they go with the "TV movie" format for each episode.

Netflix does have an extensive international collection that I'll introduce my daughter to. Right now subtitles are a bit hard for her to follow. But she was a huge fan of the 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Will expand her horizons as she gets older. There's a Filipino movie which was on Netflix which was really well done and serious in nature but man it was depressing as hell.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
The thing is, as of the 2010 census, Asians were still only 4.7% of the population. Based on personal anecdotes, it seems to me many of these Asians still wrap themselves in their own culture here; they watch their own TV shows and their own movies. It would be interesting to see what percentage are second-gen or later, but it would be a subset of an already smallish-group that is sparsely represented in many non-urban centers of the country.$iljanus wrote:Of course there's a big world of media out there. I wouldn't count on the US TV industry to explicitly set about trying to create an Asian TV star. More likely one will arise from a supporting role, or perhaps an international breakout star will be conscripted.
Which Filipino movie are you referring to? My wife subjects me to silly rom-coms all of the time, but I've seen some that were not. I tend to prefer Korean movies, but often everyone dies in the end. There's good stuff coming out of Japan, China, and even Thailand. Of course there is also Bollywood, but I haven't really developed an interest in Indian culture.
