He's spent his entire adult life selling himself as a brand. To do that, he's used exaggeration as his primary tool. Now that he's in a position of trust and not simply sales, he needs to be taught that what he's doing will only erode public trust.

Re: The Trump Presidency Thread
I'm genuinely curious how Trump supporters defend that kind of behavior. If they do at all.
I'm not trying to be facetious - I really want to know if they believe that the President of the United States should be on Twitter insulting celebrities. That goes way beyond politics. I voted for Bush....twice....and even in my most staunch card-carrying Republican days I could admit when he was being an idiot.
I just can't grasp when things became so black and white. My guy is always right, your guy is always wrong, end of story. That's not how real life works. It's so delusional it borders on mental illness.

Most of the ones I know are fully supportive of it. Doesn't matter that it's entirely absurd andridiculous, it's more important that this is something no other president has ever done. In their minds, that fact automatically makes it great because Trump is "shaking up the DC establishment" or some such bullshit.
Their entire ethos is stigginit and repercussions be damned, basically.

I also can't grasp it, but don't kid yourself that it's a Republican issue. It's a human issue. Democrats would do the same thing to defend their guy if the tables were reversed. People are idiots. We clearly can't be trusted to govern ourselves.YellowKing wrote:I'm genuinely curious how Trump supporters defend that kind of behavior. If they do at all.

She has a point. Yes, I do believe that fear and racism were essential tools that helped usher in Trump's victory. But i also believe that there has been an elitist element within the liberal sector that tries to portray all conservatives as dumb, racist hicks. And being talked down to by Hollywood simply reinforces that view.Max Peck wrote:YellowKing wrote: Why defend Trump when you can attack Streep, and all the Hollywood Liberal Elites™ for good measure.
And while I agree with her opinion of the orange orangutan, I don't understand why she had to go out of her way to associate a love of football and MMA with being a bully and supressing free speech.
McCain is no fan of a Trump. She's made that perfectly clear. I think her tweet was meant more as a reminder of what sets Trump followers on edge.

Talk about missing the point entirely. I really couldn't care less about what Streep said, positive or negative. Whether a celebrity wants to praise Trump or criticize him, it doesn't matter in the least and, frankly, should have exactly zero impact on a person's opinion of him.Max Peck wrote:Why defend Trump when you can attack Streep, and all the Hollywood Liberal Elites™ for good measure.YellowKing wrote:I'm genuinely curious how Trump supporters defend that kind of behavior. It's the fact that the soon-to-be-leader of the free world decides that the appropriate response to any criticism or praise is to either throw around insults and have a temper tantrum or gloat about it like my 7 year old when she beats me in Mario Mart. THAT is the gorram problem.

Of all the statements evaluated by PolitFact, only 4% of Trump statements were graded as 100% true. This means that 96% of Trump statements contain some degree false or misleading statement. In other words, if Trump is talking, he's probably not telling the whole truth.

Because they have been told repeatedly for the past 25+ years that you cannot trust the media. And Politifact and any other fact checking sources are seen as bias by them and not trustworthy. So in effect they don't think Trump lies about anything. Plus Benghazi and emails. Duh!Remus West wrote:This is the part that baffles me the most. He is an outright liar. That's not even in question. I've said it before and I'll say it again Conservatives hate any institution that is charged with researching, evaluating and then presenting the truth/science/news. Whether it be the media, universities, ethics review panels, etc. They tend to get in the way of their "common sense" approach to figuring things out.

But it isn't just that. You can simply listen to him on two separate occasions and he will probably directly contradict himself at least once. If you simply pay a little attention to him you see it. He doesn't try to hide that he is a liar. This is why it is baffling. I get that they don't trust the people telling them he lies. I don't get how they can listen to his lies and not see it and/or not care about it.Scraper wrote:Because they have been told repeatedly for the past 25+ years that you cannot trust the media. In one encouraging development, twitter's userbase shrank last year. One would like to believe that Trump had something to do with that. As this blogger aptly put it, "I have to conclude, after half a decade of troubleshooting, that it may simply be impossible to make this platform usable for anyone but trolls, robots and dictators."LawBeefaroni wrote:

Trump is about to give a whole new meaning to the term "bully pulpit."
My conference today is uncertain over whether Trump can deliver on permanent Death Tax Repeal -- a Republican talking point for 20 years. There is a real possibility of making it part of the income tax with basically the same effect. Incredible.
Trump has proposed tax reform that includes making net operating losses permanent -- like his $916 million loss from 1995 which lasts only 20 years (so 2016). The cynic in me expects the Trump Presidency to turn out being the YUGEST tax shelter ever.

Cynic? That was my first thought when first through his hat in the ring. To me he more known for personal accounting with bankruptcy protection than he is for any other thing. Whoever get screwed or helped would have been afterthought. He wanted to be president to protect his financial well being and legacy.Zarathud wrote:Trump has proposed tax reform that includes making net operating losses permanent -- like his $916 million loss from 1995 which lasts only 20 years (so 2016). I'm guess record sales and buybacks will continue to raise prices on GM for a few days... Unless DJT goes after Mary Berra for basically telling him to piss off like Toyota did.

I'm just happy to be out of the "guess" department in this sector. I'm okay with some volatility. Holding a position in a manufacturing company that's square in DJT's sights? Amen to that. Only I'll be holding my F through the DJT choppy waters. I really wish I had money to burn when they sunk to around $11 and dividends were looking close to 6% and they're sales were still on target for record numbers. Once they got his praise, I wished I had money to buy and sell on a quick a turn around or that I was comfortable enough to get in the options games. The Meal wrote:I'm just happy to be out of the "guess" department in this sector. The problem is trying to sort out DJT from R domination that promises to deregulate and cut taxes. Again I wish I was comfortable enough for the options game. I think a lot of people are going to make (and lose) a lot of money in an unstable market that is going to quickly hit obviously overvalued tootsweet.
What aren't you "guessing" on right now between DJT and Congress? Oil is on the rise even when we're selling off the strategic oil reserves and POTUS Elect is about to make the US Oil Tsar the best friend of Russia who is looking to expand production to levels high enough to export? Health care?
Comfort foods... I think comfort foods is where it's at. Who owns Kraft?

Thats disappointing to hear even while being understandable. Disappointing because that is exactly what he wants. If investors leave them then companies will be forced to cave to his bully tactics. Understandable because it isn't as though you have so much money you can afford the risk. The Meal wrote:I'm just happy to be out of the "guess" department in this sector. It's simple. If he trashes it, buy it. He probably is.The Meal wrote:I'm just happy to be out of the "guess" department in this sector. I'm okay with some volatility.
