John Oliver Is Buying Ads on Cable News to Talk to President Trump

Trump, Oliver assumes, does not watch Last Week Tonight; he doesn’t have the SNL lobby-by-way-of-sketch-comedy path available to him. So Oliver announced that he and his staff had come up with a way to circumvent that unfortunate situation: ads. Cold, hard, capitalistic ads. Bought for the time during the morning hours of cable news—set to air, specifically, in Washington, D.C., between the Trump-friendly times of 8:30 and 9:00 a.m.

Oliver and his team based their ads on one spot that commonly airs during Fox & Friends and the like—an ad starring a cowboy, talking about his catheter.

Last Week Tonight’s spin on that ad went like this: “I’m a professional cowboy, and I use catheters,” the Oliverian cowboy tells his viewers. “Been cowboyin’ for 25 years, and there’s two things I know: I don’t like pain when I cath. And the nuclear triad consists of land-based missiles, submarine-launched missiles, and aerial bombers. This increases our ability to strike back in the event one of those is destroyed, and deters an attack on us or our allies.”

The cath-cowboy concluded: “So that’s the nuclear triad, in case you’re the kind of person who might really need to know that.”

Because she's the actual FLOTUS?

Apparently she's the person who organized the conference in question.

To be clear: Justin Trudeau, on his way to meet with a president who has hinted at deep, even existential damage to Canada's trading economy and perhaps even its sovereignty on security matters, decided he wanted a showy meeting about the role of women in the workplace.

No matter that even a few days ago, nobody on either side of the visit was saying anything in briefings about women in the workforce. There'd been too much negative coverage about free trade and immigration and border crossing problems. The subject needed changing, big league.

It was a bit rich, given the history of this president, but it was understandable, and it worked.

Everybody won: Trudeau got to be the feminist again, and Trump, the fellow with the grabby hands and the history of bullying and bad-mouthing female employees, got to sit with a photogenic foreign leader and a bunch of women executives and look concerned. Trump's daughter Ivanka, a private businesswoman who officially has no role at the White House, sat beside Trudeau, looking like she had a big official role in the White House.

At the table, Trump himself announced the creation of something called the "Canada-United States Council for Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs," because women, in Trump's words, are "phenomenal," and "I know, Justin, in Canada, it's happening, big league, and it's very important."

Ivanka's been having a rough week. If pimping out our prettyboy PM to make her feel important (and give her some eye candy) makes her feel better, and that makes her dad feel a little less like crushing Canada, then I'm willing to make that sacrifice in the national interest.

Besides, she's got to learn the new family business somehow...

In general, these border crossings seem to be by people that are already in the US, but are afraid that they'll be deported, so they're making a run for Canada while they can. At least that tweet went with a friendly, photogenic scene. Some of the asylum seekers really didn't plan well for trying to walk across the border in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter.
