That poor woman author got SO much free advertising from the local and national news shows. All the banter-bot morning shows reading bad passages from the books as if it was award-worthy writing.

Max Peck wrote:Tell me "When he told her he worked in IT support, it really turned her on. Then it turned her off. Then it turned her on again." isn't funny. I dare you.
The problem is that I am currently working in IT, and hear that joke on average, once a day. Sometimes from my own peers. What humour it might have contained is long since wrung out of it.
I will say that once upon a time I would have found "did you try turning it off and on again?" at least mildly funny.
And an hour after I wrote this a co-worker made the joke. "Did you try turning it off and on again?" Haha. *punch*
One afternoon in March 2007, Jack Daws stepped up to a newsstand in Los Angeles International Airport with a handful of change, including a counterfeit penny made of 18-karat gold that Mr. Daws, a Seattle artist, had fashioned.
...
He never expected to see it again, but he wondered where the penny ended up: stuck in a giant penny jar, melted down with other coins back at the United States Mint, lost in a street gutter. Meanwhile, one of his other counterfeit pennies sold for $1,000 to a collector through the Greg Kucera gallery.
Then, Mr. Daws woke up one morning in October [2009] and listened to a voicemail left by a Brooklyn graphic designer named Jessica Reed.
“I think I found your gold penny,” the message said.
Kathleen Quinn just finished creating a popular gooey concoction called “slime” at her kitchen table last week when she noticed both of her hands were starting to hurt.
The 11-year-old girl from Rockland, Massachusetts, said her skin suddenly started to feel “really hot and tingly.”
She told her parents, who noticed her skin was starting to turn bright red and starting to bubble. They immediately drove her to a nearby hospital, where they discovered her hands were covered in second- and third-degree burns, CBS Philly reports.
...
The blistering burns were a result of handling homemade slime, the newest social media craze that’s inspiring kids to make their own with do-it-yourself recipes.
In fact, it’s become so popular, liquid glue sales rose during the second half of 2016, and during the last four weeks of the year they more than doubled, according to Newell Brands (NWL), the parent of Elmer’s Glue.
...
Quinn was using three key ingredients Elmer’s glue, water and Borax -- sodium borate -- to make her slime.
Borax sales are also on the rise because it’s a key ingredient in making slime. Doctors, however, have warned parents that Borax can be toxic if it’s not safely diluted, which may have been the case with Quinn.
According to CBS Philly, doctors said Kathleen’s blisters came from “extended exposure” to Borax.
Though she’s in pain, Kathleen is expected to make a full recovery. But her parents hope others share their daughter’s story as a warning to beware of homemade slime, and be extra cautious when using Borax.
Both of my kids love watching videos about making stuff on youtube. So far it is just watching. They ask about trying stuff but I always say no... that will probably have them trying without me. Time to hide the borax.

Though I suppose it's better than them playing with a found lighter or matches in their bedroom and burning the house down.

After watching a few episodes of the Primitive Technology guy, my 4.5-year-old son decided he wanted us to build another house in the back yard, using only tools we made ourselves, of course.
I kind of feel that when you're offered an opportunity to take courses on IED construction and classification, identification and awareness you just do it. It's totally legit (the classes are offered through the DHS) and not a trap in any way designed to entice sketchy people to sign up for a class, right?

That isn't slime, that is known as Gak. you are suppose to saturate water with borax and use it as one component. the idiots probably put borax directly into the glue.
50ml non washable white glue
50ml water
40ml saturated borax water.
mix the glue and water in a ziplock; when combined (when glue is thinned a bit) add the borax water and it will start to thicken.
just like silly putty. very cool stuff.
these are the types of things you know off hand when you work in a science museum.

Eating homemade silly putty made from cleansers?
In fairness to Smoove, that's preferable to the reeking malignancy of New Jersey.

I've used it for a few things over the years, including for preserving animal hides, and believe it or not, cleaning. It isn't actually toxic unless you're eating vast quantities of it, and touching it isn't dangerous (it is used as a foot soak, for instance, or as a hair rinse.) It is, however, pretty alkaline. I'm guessing that she must have either not followed the directions, or mixed it with something else for it to have that severe of a reaction. There's more to this than just what a kid would get handling slime.
My gf freaks when she sees a spider, but made me promise not to kill them when I try to get rid of them.
Therefore, I certainly get my exercise whenever she spots one. I have to go get a paper cup and a piece of cardboard to slide underneath, and then try to capture the spider by trapping it under the cup. I invariably wind up in a sweat by the time I've (usually) captured it. Because I'm not allowed to kill them, my success rate is not very good. Maybe 50%. After I capture them, I throw them outside. I didn't bother to tell her that they likely wouldn't survive long outside with the winter we just had. But the weather is getting nicer now, so I won't be feeling so guilty.
I also have to do this with moths.
Flies and mosquitoes, however, I am allowed to terminate with extreme prejudice, so I do.

Unless its a large spider or strange looking I either pick it up by the legs or let it fall or crawl into my hand and then set them outside.

Burns / Allergies can happen with almost anything, if you use enough of it.
Once I found out I was allergic to packing tape glue. That's because I used up about 5 rolls worth doing packing, a LOT of packing. My hands started having tiny little blisters. Had to wash my hands thoroughly and waited a week or two for it to go away.

Spiders are pretty hardy. I just use a tissue and pinch them gently through it. They are typically still alive when I flush them down the toilet.
I only do that when a family member insists though. As I've lectured them repeatedly, spiders are our friends.
PC gamers have reacted angrily to a joint admission by Nvidia and AMD that both companies have been working together to make identical graphics cards, then simply paint them red or green and ship them off.
"We can't live a lie any longer," confirmed Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang as he stood side-by-side with AMD CEO Lisa Su at a joint press conference organised earlier today. "This has gone on too long. It's time that we set things right."
The press conference included a walkthrough of the joint graphics card factory, which showed a highly advanced production process that finished up with sheepish-looking workers carefully painting the cards red and green and coughing in an embarrassed fashion.
Su revealed that the two companies joined forces years ago, after realising it would be "much cheaper" and "pretty funny" to simply make one graphics card and then pay for advertising to convince people the two were different.
"Watching people analyse and pore over every detail, convincing themselves they were 'an AMD man' or a 'diehard Nvidia fan', was immensely satisfying," Hu said. "We had some good times. We laughed as each new card release 'took the lead'."
Amazon is now collecting state sales tax from everyone.
I, for one will be buying less on Amazon. That was the one thing that kept me from Wal Mart as that's 10% taxes. will probably be dropping Prime.
Been doing it forever to me thanks to having a huge warehouse / shipping point in my town. ( Which never f'n ever ships anything to me from that f'n mofo'n building)

Funny, this was the exact subject of the nightmare I had last night.

I've been paying taxes on Amazon stuff for years. I figured everyone had been at this point.
The real money-saver for me is that I don't have to pay for gas. Out here in Rural Land, running to a store that has more than basic necessities is a 50-mile round trip. Going to a specialty store is double that. I actually get to see the inside of a video game, RPG, or board game retailer once or twice a year at most.
