Climb into the wayback machine

.
:horse: Steam Greenlight: GODS remastered
In cooperation with Mike Montgomery, one of the original founders of The Bitmap Brothers, and Sound of Games, we developed a remastered version of the legendary Amiga/Atari ST action platformer GODS. The game itself can be seen as a predecessor of modern 3rd person Action games, paving the way with adaptive level design, puzzles and a lot of action!

While the original gameplay and levels have been preserved very accurately, the new version features more state of the art HD looks based on a complete 3D based refurbishment, lighting effects and an extraordinary new soundtrack. Even if you prefer to revisit the game in all its original pixel glory you can have a go with this version, even play it with a much smoother frame rate than the 16Bit game!

So far the game has been developed for mobile devices and we now want to bring an enhanced version to Steam that will feature better graphics and effects along with controller support to get closer to the original experience.

Highlights:
- Very accurate preservation of the original levels and gameplay
- Includes 4 levels a 3 worlds crammed with action and puzzles
- Enhanced level and sprite graphics in 3D, using proper lighting and effects
- All new sound effects and soundtrack created by Sound of Games
- Includes the original pixel graphics and sound effects of the Amiga version
- Switch anytime between the remastered and the original version during the game

NOTE: The gameplay video and screenshots were captured from the mobile version. The PC version will get enhanced graphics with more details, effects and better resolution!

I found an old game that I haven't played as I had a lousy PC at the time... John Woo Presents Stranglehold. Basically, this is HKPD Inspector Tequila Yuen's further adventures (see Hard Boiled (1992) At its heart, it's a third person shooter, but with bullet time, most of the time, and with classic John Woo moves such as the hero doing off-the-wall dodges, jumps, slides across table, ride down rails, even ride on a cart and keep shooting. And hey, it's Tequila himself (and for a game it did capture Chow Yun Fat pretty darn well.

At its heart the game is quite reminiscent of Max Payne 2, but with a couple florishes. 1) Vastly more environmental stuff to react to, such as shoot through some barriers, explode the barrels (a bit like Time Crisis where you can shoot a beam to collapse it onto all the enemies rather than shoot them individually) as well as ride down stair hand rails, slide across tables, and cross the area on a cart while shooting, that sort of thing. You can even kick over tables as barriers. 3) Extra abilities like quick heal, precision aim, and barrage (berzerk mode) where you wade through enemies point-blank in slow-mo, and 4) Standoff, where you face multiple bad guys, where you can dodge his shots while you shoot them. Heck, they even threw in a 5) shooting gallery mode where you're on a HKPD gunship and you're on a sidegun shooting down at gangs smuggling drugs and guns.

So what's got Tequila riled up? A cop has disappeared, and it appears one of the gangs has declared war on the cops. Tequila shoots his way through the gang and even blew up some smuggling boats, only to realize that his girlfriend and his daughter (both are actually HK gang princesses) had been kidnapped in the US by Russian mob who had teamed up with this gang's rivals. I'm about 3-4 levels in and so far, it's interesting. :)

Finished Stranglehold. It's fun.

Decided I needed a mindless shooter, bought IS Defense. It's a blast. :D I wish for slightly less frantic action though. :)

Somehow, today, I was totally in the zone in IS defense. In the 3rd mission, Croatian Airfield, I racked up a kill count of... 30000+. Yes, I was playing for... several hours on a single mission. My score was in the top 50 worldwide. Indeed, I may have gone on for a bit longer except it's now 4AM. :-P

I found my old copy of "Enter the Matrix" and decided to install it just to see how good (or bad) it is. Dang, this thing brings back some memories... Back in 2003 textures are a joke, and even polygons are hilariously bad, as the car has diamond shaped tires, but the game did deliver *some* interesting gameplay, at least for the time.

EDIT: Also found "The Italian Job" (based on the OLD movie, not the remake) and it's hilariously bad driving as it relies on impossible car physics. The cops can spin donuts around you and thus you can't get around them. While you have huge turning radiuses, and your 3rd person viewpoint is so close as to be worthless when used for driving as you can't see the car in front of you. I remember there were a few missions in Turin that's just about impossible because the enemies are way too fast, and the first mission in Turin had me trying to outrun sedans in a VW Camper (!)

Argh. Made me wonder how did we ever tolerate these old games.

EDIT: Decided to bring up yet another oldie... Wheelman starring Vin Diesel. Yep, licensed likeness and he recorded his dialog too.

:coffee: ... Steam has a massive new competitor

Tencent is refreshing its games platform for a global audience
Chinese megacorporation Tencent is refreshing its flagship games platform. The new service, dubbed “WeGame,” will support international users and could give the gaming world its first true competitor to Steam.

The news broke on Twitter over the weekend thanks to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad. According to his translation, one of the slides on the Tencent splash page indicates that WeGame will “support both Chinese and global users” through a single storefront. That’s significant, because TGP already has more users, some 200 million according to Ahmad, than Steam, which at last count had more than 125 million.

A new focus on Western users, combined with the massive buying power of today’s Asian consumers, could make WeGame a force to be reckoned with.

Tencent is holding plenty of cards with it comes to developing and publishing games. The company owns Riot Games (League of Legends) and Supercell (Clash of Clans) outright. It has a piece of Glu Mobile, makers of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. It even has a minority stake in both Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.

One market research firm estimates that Tencent controls 13 percent of the entire games market.

The current TGP platform, which a counter says has been downloaded nearly 4.5 billion times already, is here. WeGame should be available soon.

They own some of a Kim Kardashian software title ... whats not to trust?

I smell a legitimization of Chinese gold farmers coming down the road. "You want to be on our platform? We've got some stipulations..."

That said - pass. Steam does just fine for me. I don't need a fourth platform on top of Origin, GoG, and Steam sitting on my system. Especially not one from China.

Tencent is big, in China. WeChat however, is not making TOO much inroads into Western markets except Chinese-Americans. I have WeChat, but I don't use it much. So WeGame is not going to attract too many Western users.

So far, Wheelman is not that bad! Primary action is on wheels, so it's car chases (and mopeds, and motorcycles chases) but it's done reasonably well in Barcelona Spain, good variety of small passages, streets, and highways, along with ramps and whatnot. And it slowly introduces more and more activities. You can follow the main plot, or you can play the side missions to build up your character or car. There's street racing, rampage, take out the other party, run for the safehouse, air jack a car, and so on. Air jack is basically F&F style hijacking... Drive, get close to the other car, jump through the air, land on the other car, kick out the other driver. Yes, this is done while your car's moving. I actually had pretty fond memories of this until one mission that was so over the top it's impossible to complete (for me, at the time). Something about hijacking a prison van and get it away from the cops, IIRC.

Some of these missions are completely random. Racing, for example, the other side cheats in that the other six drivers SHOOT at your car. WTF?! So either blow past them or slam them, but they slam you as well, and one bad slam and you're out of track and no time to pass.

I figured out why some missions are so difficult... I didn't use the "aimed shots" ability. There was a mission where I had to jack the info broker's limo, but he had two nasty escorts with heavily armed guards. But with Milo's aimed shot, I can just explode the escorts, then shoot the limo driver directly. Once he tumbled out, the limo just stops, then you can jack the limo without shooting anyone else instead of shoot the three guards separately (which takes too much time). Then the mission is pretty simple.

EDIT: Previously, I chased these yahoos all over town, and I barely get to disable ONE of the escorts, much less two of them. Once I figured out the problem. I exploded both escorts well before the long tunnel, then spent the next ten attempts stuck in the tunnel trying to shoot all three of his gunners (one of whom has a LMG!). I discovered the shortcut by accident. I pulled up to the left of the limo and just started shooting into the driver window, and next thing I know, the driver tumbled out of the limo and limo coasted to a stop! I was like ,'WAT?' so I walked up to it and got in. The three gunmen stepped out and started shooting at the limo like they're reacting to a hijacked vehicle. So I accelerated out of there. Muahahahahaha.

Oh man, this "get the document mission" is the most frustrating mission ever, because it's so f***ing long. It goes roughly like this:

You got news that two gangs, the Chulos Canallas and the Lantos gang are fighting over some documents. Your job is to shoot your way into the place to reach the document.

Except once you get there, the Romanian gang crash the party... they blocked all the exits, and it becomes kinda demo derby as the Romanians are fighting the Chulos and you're shooting both of them. And the head honcho's car is bullet proof, so you have to vehicle slam him to submission.

Once you do that, the Chulos' leader crashes the party on a motorbike, and he leads you into a LONG chase all around town, down into the subway station. Then you fight through his minions.

Then he got down onto the platform and jumped on and hijacked a subway train. And you have to get on a motorbike to chase him down. Then you have to shoot away the other cars (of a 4 car train) so he's alone, then you have to get in front of him and shoot him enough times he croaks. WHILE being chased by his minions whose bikes and cars somehow got into the subway tunnels.

The problem in the tunnels is if you crash your bike, it's pretty much game over, as you can't keep up with them on foot. You either hijack one of the chasing minion's vehicles, or you restart at the checkpoint, which is where he got on the train. And if you went down the wrong branch, you are f***ed. If you ruined your bike, hit an incoming train, got shot off your bike or crashed off your bike, you're f***ed. There are so many ways to die it's a wonder ANYONE finishes this mission.

These "next to impossible" missions are plentiful.

There was a mission where you're hijacking a huge semi and trying to go home... on the other side of the city. And you're always hounded by multiple enemies it's almost pointless to swat them.

There's another where I'm supposed to hijack a police van under escort by SWAT! Had to disable to SWAT van first, by shooting out all four tires, THEN somehow get close enough to air jack the prison van while police cars are hounding me. I think I ended up shooting the driver and jacking the van that way.

There's another fun mission... The Chulos 2nd in command got jumped by Romanians and got a bomb strapped to his chest, and the car's hot (as in just got involved in an armed robbery). I have to get the guy out of police intensive search area by sticking to the backroads, then somehow get him to HQ where he gets his bomb taken off without running out of time, oh, and my brakes are shot (handbrake only). :D

The missions so far are not too painful except the extended chase missions. Imagine driving half way across down while being chased by infinitely respawning minions that you can't outrun. So you basically have to drive a car until it's toast, jack a different car, rinse and repeat, and hope you don't die in the meanwhile.

Right now, this is fun as Wheelman tries to get the three major gangs go after each other, and in the confusion, he (secretely backed by CIA) conduct some sort of a heist with a couple of independents.

Finished "The Wheelman". Driving model is quite good, not sim good, more like Need for Speed series good in that kinda inbetween where driving model is simplified but not so much so you can't tell the cars apart. And the city of Barcelona is done nicely. The plot however, is plainly out of Fast and Furious.
Spoiler:
The big ending had you crash a vehicle into the yacht by jumping off end of a pier, resulting in a huge kaboom, which was the exact ending of one of the F&F movies.
A lot of the missions are MUCH simpler if you... borrowed the right vehicle. And I used a... Big rig for many of them. They are lumbering beasts, but when the enemy was rubber-banding (they go just ahead of you) it doesn't matter if you pick a fast or slow vehicle. And this vehicle is VERY bullet resistant, capable of running even when all the tires are shot off.

My 13-year-old finished up Fallout 4 a couple of weeks ago, and bought himself Skyrim for his next project. I'm setting it up for him. You know what that means for me: two solid days of modding!

The good news is that Mod Organizer is reliable enough that I can just copy his install over to my system when he's done and use the same mod set myself, so I'm basically modding it on multiple systems simultaneously.

I still strongly suggest that anyone planning on modding Skyrim start with the STEP Project Guide.

If you want a super-polished, bug-fixed, stable experience that feels like the vanilla game, stop after installing what they suggest.

If you want something more (like running Legacy of the Dragonborn, an amazing mod), then use STEP as your baseline and add others to it.

Convenient, given that I don't own the SE.

The main achievement of the SE (from a PC perspective) was splitting the mod community. There will always be far, far more mods available for the original version, and those mods can do almost everything for the graphics that Bethesda did with the SE. I'd be willing to bet that a well-modded regular install could beat the snot out of an SE install visually.

Not unless you've got an extra $6 in your wallet.
"Collection"... as in a physical copy, I assume.

I *think* Battlespire was the first LAN party game I ever played. It went terribly. I do still have my CD and manual somewhere. If someone on eBay would give me $500 for it, they can have it.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Perhaps, but he said "game" not "box" so one assumption is as good as the other. :)

I mean, it's a nice box...

But not $500 nice.

I never really liked fantasy so I guess I missed that one.

I was digging through my old pile and found a BUNCH of games from 2000's. and quite a few of them won't install right. Guess I'll have to toss them. Most of them are still in boxes. :) Heck, I think I have more than a few on Steam already. :D

Found an old game: Outlaw Chopper, basically a cute budget attempt to make a motorcycle gang game... Start with just simple courier jobs, slowly graduate to beatings, shootings, turf wars, and so on. Unfortunately, the beginning jobs are really lame, and driving model has you "drifting" a chopper (i.e. "handbrake", eek!)

Gamespot review:
This god-awful Grand Theft Auto clone looks, sounds, and plays like it cost even less to make than it will cost you to buy it.

Some people might argue that the Grand Theft Auto series, for all the attention it gets, wouldn't amount to much if you stripped out the games' top-notch storylines, consistently excellent voice acting, unique sense of style, clever mission designs, enjoyable driving mechanics, engaging combat, and sheer environmental scope. For those who believe this, your messiah has arrived in the form of Outlaw Chopper. This budget-priced PC action game strips out all of the above from the GTA formula, leaving only the most bare, skeletal mechanics required to make for a functional game. And it is functional--but as far as entertainment goes, Outlaw Chopper is completely bereft of anything of the sort.
