I left at 18 too, although I was far too poor to afford a girlfriend, much less get married.

The idea of kids moving out of their parents' home as soon as they are considered adults is a very modern one, It started changing during the industrial revolution, but the numbers only really began to drop after WWII. We aren't experiencing a change so much as we're experiencing a return to historical norms, much of it driven by the iffy economy of the past decade. Of course, that's improving lately, but the jury is still out on whether that improvement will continue for anyone who isn't already rich.

Basically, when America changed from a farming community to a manufacturing, then a service economy.

This kid refuses to grow up. There is ample evidence that he will never have anything but a poverty job without a degree, but he won't even finish his associates degree, even with 39k in his tap. I found 3 of his weekly paychecks uncashed on his bedroom floor. All he does is tweet and play games.

Wow. Sounds like somebody needs to pay rent. Here's a good one. My wife's parents charged her rent to live at home after she graduated college. It wasn't much, but it they absolutely took it. Alternatively, they didn't charge her step brother a dime. In fact, they purchased him a car (which he totaled) and payed off his credit card bills (which he ran up again). Their argument was that he didn't go to college so they needed to "even" things out. Because spending money on college is exactly the same as pissing it away on credit cards or totaling a new car. I'll skip to the tragic end - he ended up dying after making a really, really stupid decision in his late 30s. While I wouldn't try to draw a straight line between how they treated him and his inability to understand consequences, I don't think it unreasonable to assume there was a relationship.

I actually broke up with the gF after I got back from Jamaica. Eventually, I agreed to a face to face, where she demanded I cook her filet mignon and lobstertail (because I'm worth it!) and told me that she had feelings of resentment toward my ex, because she felt that I initially started caring for my m-i-l for Peggy's sake, but at the end, I was doing it for my ex.
Mom died a foot away from me. Fuck you, bitch.

Never knew that. Always loved that theme but now it seems different. MASH is tied with the original Star Trek as best show ever. But I have never watched the movie. I grew up on the show and after seeing stuff on the movie I just never wanted to see it. May have to one day.

When I was younger I was all about getting the kids out ASAP. As they grow older I am softening up on that. If they don't leave, it would prevent us from downsizing. The way assessments and property taxes are going around here we're going to need to downsize if we are ever going to have a hope of retiring. Just yesterday my wife was saying she'd love to get a couple acres in Van Alstyne (small town on the north edge of civilization)... I don't want acres and I do want high speed internet. Our vision of life in 20 years is *very* different.

I like to think I give them proper respect and always keep my limbs out of the path the saw might take if it either jumps forward or backward. I've got neighbors than won't go anywhere near their own chainsaws and ask their friends to use them instead. I've tried the alternatives, axes and hand saws, but f&%k that.

Incentives to move can vary, but at a minimum it sounds like this one should be paying room & board equivalent to whatever it would be to have two other roomies and sharing space. Nothing drives a kid out faster than paying the exact same amount to stay at home as they would if they were out by themselves.

So I'm playing the grocery store's Monopoly game. It's not my main grocer, but they recently renovated the store and added a nice salad bar, so I've been shopping there more than I used to, and I decided to take a game board and their tickets.

This weekend Wife went to a different outlet of the same chain and came home with a phat stack of game pieces that another customer, who wasn't playing, gave her in the checkout line.

While sitting in front of the tv last night I dutifully stuck the little game pieces on the board and tossed the duplicates. Much to my surprise, I apparently won a "$1,000 laptop computer." If it's not a trick it will be the most valuable thing I've ever won. I hope they won't stick me with an Apple product or something else I'd have to sell. I don't really need a new laptop yet but I wouldn't mind having one, and $1,000 would buy a pretty sweet one if I can shop for what I want.

I wonder if I can get the cash instead.

For my 18th birthday (1978), my father handed me $100, and then told me that from now on, I would be paying $100 per month to keep living there. All the old rules still applied, including the 11:00 curfew. I protested the curfew since I was paying rent, but Dad always had this thing about not wanting to hear the front door opening and closing while he was sleeping. Or the back door. Or a window (I ran those options past him). And my girlfriend could come over, but no sex or I'd be evicted.

I paid that rent for two years until I finally got tired of having sex in the car in winter, and moved out. Found a great apartment (one furnished room and a bathroom) for $80 per month including heat. No curfew. Lots of sex. Everybody wins.

I miss those days.

Watched this video. Its about a grocery shopping trip to a food store in 1962. Get this, she buys.....

1 dozen eggs
1 can peaches
5 lbs roast
4 cans soup
1 lb butter
1 jar apple juice
1 bag apples
3 cans beans
3 cans tuna
2 lbs hamburger meat
1/2 gal milk
1 bag carrots
3 cans frozen orange juice
1 box crackers
2 packs frozen peas
1 jar dog food

And I think there was one other boxed item I couldn't make out in the kids buggy ....maybe cereal....and the total was $5.63!!!!!

I fuss about this a lot. Seems cheap compared to wages. If that was today then minimum wage should be like $20 an hour or more. Looking at the wage back then it was $1.15 an hour.

Today that 5 lb roast by itself would be $25. Hell a 12 pack of Cokes is $5. She got 2 bags full of food lol. Geez. I bet if I could go back to 1962 and tell people that 12 Cokes would be $5 they wouldn't believe me. Some might say they are a little high but no way thet'd ever cost that much. Then again I bet people back then were saying stuff was too darn high. In the video she even tells the kid she cant get the strawberries because they are too high lol. GEEZ I say.

$5.63!! Sigh. I get down one aisle in Walmart buying just crap brand crap products and Im at $20.

Locally, food seems to be on an uptick right now too. Sales are going down and all of the crazy customer perks and reward programs have all been drastically reduced. My last grocery shop wasn't that large and was mostly saled staples and I still hit $90. I'm used to that same volume/type of food sales costing me around $50 after I play all of the shopping games. I fear that grocers were discovering their relationship to the Internet and it literally took a decade for them to figure it out and my golden goose for cheap food living has been cooked and eaten. The bright side is that living as a miser is a lot of effort. When you take away all of the meaningful saving, I move to the aw fuck it mode a lot and allow myself the pleasures of eating out and not having to play sales games with everything. During my vacation, someone else prepared a meal for me at least once a day every day. I was friggen king, I tells ya!
