Netflix and Prime are eight bucks for weeks of entertainment. We'd be paying the same for one show that we pay elsewhere for an entire library.geezer wrote:It's *six* bucks for for hours of entertainment. C'mon...

I saw previews for this during the Regal Cinemas pre-show or whatever they call it before Spider-Man. It looks good. I'd give it a chance if it wasn't on CBS All Access.

I'm sure a new ST series will bring them a wave of subscribers. I'm skeptical that it will meet their projections, and I hope that doesn't tarnish the ST brand.

Not to mention that they've announced they'd be having a midseason hiatus, in effect stretching the amount of time people need to pay for the service before being able to watch more. I think they've also said they're limiting the amount of episodes available at a time to prevent binging. The more I hear about this service, the shittier a deal it seems to be for what is supposedly its main market. I mean, CBS seems to really want their own service to be successful, but it would be so much easier if they didn't have to make Americans jump through hoops in order to watch it and instead strike a deal with Netflix like some of the other countries. Viewership numbers would be higher as a result and less likely to end up being cancelled. As it is, I'm expecting it to be much more successful in foreign markets. This CBS All-Access thing just seems to be asking for trouble.

Anyway, if the show gets good buzz, I'll check it out. What's silly about the CBS All Access thing is that there's basically no way that it's going to make me into a long-term subscriber. I am skeptical that they could structure it in a way to avoid "subscribe for a month and watch the whole show in that time frame". And if they do manage to do it that way, there's so much good TV on my backlog that I wouldn't really have an issue just skipping the show.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/20 ... ality.htmlThe premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery" on CBS' subscription streaming service, CBS All Access, was postponed nine months to maintain the quality of the brand.
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman told the Television Critics Association Tuesday that they "spent a lot of time" discussing how to create this new world for TV that felt authentic to the "Star Trek" universe.

Kind of looks like a mix between an Jem'Hadar and a Klingon. Way too generic.

StarTrek.com
CBS All Access has just released a new video revealing the titles of the first four episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. The titles are "The Vulcan Hello," "Battle at the Binary Stars," "Context Is for Kings" and "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry."

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Nope. I couldn't care less. They have changed the look of the Klingons what, about 57 times? I also read somewhere that they have context we have not been made aware of that explains the different look and that there are actually several different varieties of Klingons, which frankly is kind of realistic. As long as the stories are well written and the series production values are good, Im fine with the aesthetic changes. Is anyone else made uncomfortable by the new Klingon design?
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Once, between the Original Series and The Motion Picture. It has been cleaned up a little here and there, but only that once. They went back and did a whole episode explaining it, so yes - adding narrative to explain it isn't anything new.
I think that after the Abrams films, Trek fans (myself included) with decades and hundreds of hours have just become sensitive when it comes to having canon tossed out.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
We subscribed - not only for Star Trek but also The Good Fight (and to watch old seasons of Big Brother )
The app is terrible - it doesn't always remember what episodes you've watched and it's really hard to go back to a series you're watching after you exit the app. Netflix has spoiled us.
Still, we'll keep the subscription up long enough to watch this season of Trek.

Spoiler
I have no idea how the first officer is going to still have a career. No matter what she does after this, she still attempted a mutiny. Unforgivable.
I'm glad to see it's not standalone episodes. OS this the first Trek show to go that route?
The Abrams lens flare is enough to keep me from watching another episode.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Didn't watch it because of the paywall. That's the first ST premier I've ever missed, going all the way back to TOS (except for the animated series that I only finally saw a few years ago). This pains me a little, although having The Orville around as Poor Man's Trek is an ok consolation prize.
I'm glad it's good, though; if it fails, it must be clearly due to restricted access.

That's rookie mode, guys. Watch the premiere via CBS. Then wait for finale week, sign up for the All Access trial, and complete the season for free.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
So I watched the first 2 episodes. CBS All Access isn't THAT bad.
For those of you who were looking forward to a new Star Trek: TNG, I have good news for you! The Orville is excellent!
ST:D is NOT classic Trek, at all. It is basically Star Trek: Mass Effect. That isn't a complaint - almost everything in this show is very well done. The sets and costumes are great. The actors all do magnificently. The writing is solid, and the effects are beautiful. But the first two episodes play almost exactly like the tutorial mission for a Mass Effect game. I don't think we're going to be having fun adventures anytime soon - it looks like we're going to do an in depth exploration of a single extremely tense moment in Klingon-Federation history.
I enjoyed it. Will happily keep watching.

I've never heard of that. Of course I haven't seen any series after TNG. That she did what she did and (I totally assume) will still be allowed to be anywhere outside of a prison made me dislike the show. I'm glad there is some canon to justify her being allowed to go free.

Re: [TV] New Star Trek Show in Development?
Strongest Star Trek premiere ever. Very solid acting, special effects were good to great, and the esthetic was sort of an shiny metallic updated version of Enterprise (the series). It also had a movie-like set quality. It really felt like watching a movie rather than a TV show.
Once you come to accept that this show was made in the late 201X's and the creative people that live in the here and now want to make something new using the backdrop of the Star Trek story then you'll be fine.
Here in Canada Star Trek: Discovery is being broadcast on Space, our version of SyFy, so we don't need to subscribe to anything except cable to watch it weekly.
If you want a more ST:TNG feel then watch The Orville. It's also good and getting better. However be... warned(?), it is a Seth McFarlane joint and as such isn't straight sci-fi. It's set in the future but with people who fit more into today's society than what we've been trained to think a person from the future might act like.
