I've never had an issue with my Kindle's charging port, and I've had it for two years now.

Perhaps the issue with your Kindles isn't in the Kindle but in the user?

Drove the 30+ miles home from the office and headed straight to the grocery store. At which point I realized that I left my wallet in my desk at work. And I need gas tonight.

Went home and found that I also left the fridge ajar and everything is nice and warm in there.

FML.

the USB wall charger and USB cable that came with my Kindle Keyboard (generation 2... secondhand) - i don't know what was up with those. the wall charger just stopped working one day (all my other USB wall chargers still work) and the micro-USB side of the cable literally fell apart. surprised they were so junky.

Having been through a number of different manufacturers and models, I can tell you that most charge ports are going to experience problems eventually. Especially if they are not treated gingerly, or the tablet is used while plugged in.

I had to learn some things about why they break and how to fix them (I am not into electronics), they break so often. Of course we're a family of 5 and everyone has their own tablet (except me) and there are several phones too.

I'm pretty gentle with electronics and cables (vast understatement), and I lost a Kindle Paperwhite due to the USB port/charging/battery. I'm pretty confident that there's a design flaw there (possibly not unintentional) rather than a manufacturing or component issue. The devices are so cheap for what they provide and don't offer obvious feature upgrade paths (as would be with a tablet or phone) which kills most incentive to build quality into the device (sure they milked page advance buttons in the bezel, and we all know that color is somewhere down the line, but you know {well, the reasonable you} what I mean...). Whatever percentage of users swears "that piece of junk" off forever is dwarfed by folks who simply purchase a new one. In my experience, at least.

I've had my original Kindle since they came out. Altho a few years later I went with the Fire. Both connectors are doing well.

Alas, Amazon Kindles and Kindle Fire tablets are somewhat notorious for having weak solder points on the charging port. If you have the tools and skill to solder small parts, DIY repair is fairly inexpensive. Otherwise, if you're past the warranty period, you're basically stuck with buying a replacement, paying a repair service to fix it, or a costly table shim.

I put a wireless charging receiver coil (with USB connection) on my Fire tablet and use a wireless Qi charger, so I don't worry about such things. The only "catch" is the charger blocks the USB port when it's plugged in. But then my tablet usually lasts the whole day, so I just leave it on the charge all night. (I have a separate charger for my phone)

Kindle Fire is not the e-ink Kindle. The Fire is Amazon's tablet.

Oops, my brain totally skipped that. I have never had issues with my Kindle readers and have always had issues with Kindle Fires. I always attributed it to the users. I used the readers sometimes and the kids use the Fires constantly.

Indeed, it seems more prevalent in recent Kindle e-readers, and especially Kindle Fire tablets (I also own a 3rd gen Kindle Keyboard which is still going strong).

If the cheaper tablet is seven months old, it should be covered for repair/replacement under Amazon's standard warranty.

As for the older $200-version, MissionRepair.com provides Kindle Fire charging port replacement for $49.00, which could be worth considering.

Why am I the one having to bring up physical security issues regarding the behavior of our IT VP, who is storing new, boxed PCs in a vacant office with no locks, no blinds on the interior windows, open blinds to the exterior sidewalk, and a handy checklist on the office door of all the equipment that's eventually going to be stored inside?

Ill look into that for the newer one. For the old one I can get the part and the iFixit kit and repair it myself for about $25......barring breaking the screen which seems to be common.
