At that distance I just saw "something" moving and shot at it.

From that FAQ link I posted criticizing GGs thread title, I learned the game uses an ELO rating system like is used for Chess. When the game officially releases they plan to do some skill matching based on these ratings.

Ranking[edit | edit source]
Q: What is the ranking system?
A: ELO to be added in the future after Early Access; An early version of the skill-based matchmaking system is already in the game.
Q: How do I get a better ELO score/rank?
A: It's nothing to do with kills. It's based on the rank the player(s) you are you competing with and player(s) that have died around you. It's based on skill and your own rank. A lot of it is behind closed doors so that people can't take advantage of the system.[6]
Q: How do I lose a ranking?
A: If you die to an utter noob with a low ELO, you will most likely lose ranking depending on their rank.
Q: Stream snipers are killing me, how is PUBG going to combat that in ranking?
A: PUBG will have ranked and unranked servers. But, throughout Early Access you will be put on the ranking system. Once ELO is fine tuned after Early Access, all the noobs that are trying to kill you and ruin your experience, they will be put on different servers according to your ranking. So these stream snipers will never be in a game with you anymore.[7]
Q: I'm I being matched with other people in my ranking?
A: As of now, no. After Early Access you will be matched with people within your ELO ranking.[8]
Q: Will there be unranked servers?
Yes, unranked will come so you can learn the game or fool around without losing your ELO ranking.[9]

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Heh. I used the video to explain situational awareness to my son and showed him the moment you completely occupy my view through my scope and I pull the trigger anyway because I'm hyperfocused on my target and don't even realize you are there until my bullets land in the back of your head.
Oops.
Oddly, I was dimly aware you were moving around, but once I started firing, putting the reticle on the tiny moving pixels in the distance was all that mattered.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
I don't think any of you are up when I'm up. I've been on from 8:30pm to 11:30pm EST and searched between matches, but found no one.
I had a middling night, more good than bad, and since I'm still learning I'll take that as a great thing. It was enough to shift my stats from 1275 to 1424.
Things Learned:
5th place, 5 kills. It started as mentioned above, with three of us landing in a small farming compound southwest of Pochinki. I dropped right next to one of them and beat him to death with my bare hands. I know where the other went and darted for the opposite side of the compound. I cleaned out the three buildings on that side and was modestly equipped - 1911, Machete, Tommy Gun, Level 1 Armor, Level 2 Backpack, no helmet. I knew the other player was back on the other side and scooted out to see if I could locate him. What I saw was that he had closed himself up in the biggest building and resealed the doors. I wasn't buying it, and I patiently watched over a wall in 3rd person until he exited.
He ran towards where I had looted and started searching for any dregs I left behind. All through his search, I crouch-snuck and watched his progress. As he passed through the last building, I assumed he'd come out the same door I did and set up behind it and to the side. Footsteps, louder an louder, and he popped out the door in front of me and never looked back. He left me a nice AKM and a couple mods, along with Level 2 Armor and Helmet.
I started across the wheat fields north of me, towards where the border was going to inevitably push me - but this is barren land. I crawled a hundred meters before I stopped and crouched inside a bush to look around. As I was sitting there, a vehicle drove up and the driver got out to search the compound I had left. I watched the compound and my surroundings dutifully from my bush for ages. Nothing. The zone wall eventually pushed the driver out and I watched him safely run up a hill in the distance. Satisfied, I crawled again until I made it through the entire wheat field. Long trip, not exciting, but very safe.
As the border closed in again, I caught gunfire off to the left and watched as the victor hopped in a buggy and drove off. Feeling confident that he was the last person in the area, and needing to outrun the zone wall, I stood and ran up a massive hill, moving closer to Pochinki. Near the top I found a buggy parked conveniently in the shade and out of sight, but a stealthy search found no driver. Not wanting to make any noise, I crouched and ran off to stay ahead of the wall. It was herding us towards the other side of town. The most direct route to avoid dying to the wall pushed me right through the town.
As I cross the wheat fields south of the town gunshots are echoing everywhere ahead of me. Pitched but brief battles whittled down the numbers quite a bit. Someone took pot-shots at me from a great distance, but failed to get close so I didn't stop to inspect and kept crouch-running along the side of bushes for any possible cover and safety. The southern border of the town made me tense. I've never passed through a city before. I've always heard they were death traps.
I raced at a low crouch through town, suppressing all curiosity and desire to explore. I skirted alleys and stuck to low walls like glue, passing like a crunchy shadow in the night. My own footsteps felt like thunderous drumbeats in my ears. How many people heard me? How many people would be aiming at me around the next corner? I can't sneak! If I slow down, I'll meet the blue death.
The border wall pushed us again, right up against the northern edge of town where someone had set up shop on a rooftop and was sniping. To my left and right I heard people taking shots and I had to get out of there. My path to safety was directly through that house the sniper occupied. When he popped up to look around, I shot at him - and when he ducked, I started running for his house in a zig-zag. Shots ricocheted around me and clipped me. I made it into the open garage bay with 40% of my health left.
With few options, I hunkered down in a corner and healed myself. First Aid, Bandages, Painkillers, anything I had. I heard the sniper stomping around upstairs, clearly upset that he had an intruder downstairs, and clearly uncertain of how to deal with me. I heard more gunshots outside where I had come from, and then heard running toward the house. I positioned myself and aimed carefully - they'd have to come right through where I was to get out the back. The zone wall was going to push us again very shortly.
One person darted through, and I dropped them with a full-auto AKM burst to the side. I didn't even get a chance to check for his gear before a second person ran through and was also dropped in the same fashion. Rats fleeing a sinking ship. The sniper upstairs was agitated and jumping. I hastily picked over the loot and upgraded myself to Level 3 everything. I kept my 40-round AKM and Tommygun. They had served me well. The jumping upstairs stopped abruptly and changed position. The sniper had made it off the roof. I caught him darting across the back yard as the blue wall enveloped me.
I ran for the small circle of safety. I knew it held four other killers. It was two rocks and a few trees on the side of a hill. Crap. I took fire as I ran in, knocking me down to 20% health as I dove behind a low rock and started trying to heal myself. Another player saved me the trouble. He must have been prone in the grass and watched me hunker down, because I was dead a moment later.
I had a middling night, more good than bad, and since I'm still learning I'll take that as a great thing. It was enough to shift my stats from 1275 to 1424.

Things Learned:
- If I have a double-barreled shotgun and a Full-Auto Assault Rifle, I should just drop the shotgun. I did my patient stalker thing and sealed myself inside a building with all the doors closed once I realized the zone barrier was going to herd people my way. They did. I crouched unmoving in a top room behind two closed doors and heard someone break in downstairs and start scouring the house. As they busted into my room, I unloaded both barrels on him - but he had Level 3 Armor and Helmet and was a twitchy bugger, moving left as he came in instead of straight ahead. As a result, I grazed him and was left with a glorified club. He unloaded on me after the shock wore off and that was all I wrote. He did get to pick up a nice AKM with a couple mods if he wanted it. I should have had him dead to rights, but thought I'd get myself some style points for the double-barrel to the chest.
- "Ramming Speed" is not what I assumed it would be. I saw a guy sitting behind his sedan and thought I could run him down with my Land Rover. I successfully swerved and dodged his shots at me as I came up to him, but when I "slammed" his car, it didn't roll backwards and crush him like I intended it to. It wiggled a bit and nudged him about 6 inches. I'm sure I wiggled a bit too as I died.
- The "Red Zone" is no joke. I've been running through it unhindered on foot, or waiting it out inside buildings - but last night I was trapped in the open as the shells started to fall. Thankfully, I heard the Land Rover coming down the hill behind me and jumped over a rock in time to see it roll past me in flames and then bump a wall and stop at the bottom. No one got out. I then noticed a message saying the driver had been killed by the Red Zone. I visually traced his path up the hill and found his loot box... complete with LMG, AKM, Level 3 Helm, and Level 3 Armor. He was insta-gibbed inside a vehicle while completely decked out. Manna from heaven, though it ultimately did me no good.
- Winning a fisticuffs battle with an experienced player (based on his clothes). Three of us landed, one went into a building and the other landed right next to me. I ran in and started pounding away at him. He only hit me once, and I'm not sure what the hell he thought he could accomplish by bunny-hopping around me as I hit him.
- Succeeding in the style points of double-barrel to the chest earlier. I landed in a remote house with no one around, and found just a double-barrel shotgun. I had only opened one door on the outside, and apparently someone else thought the back door being closed in a remote location meant easy loot. I heard them coming up to the door and sat in the kitchen, poised and waiting. The door opened, an unarmored pistol-wielding lady stepped through, and she caught both barrels before she could even raise her gun.

I'm not Steam friends with anyone, mostly because it kind of wierds me out to have people seeing what I'm up to and to be able to see what other people are up to; there's a mild but uncomfortable anxiety I get when I'm 'friends' with someone but I'm opting to do my own thing and I feel like they might think I'm dissing them. It might be why I don't have a Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, InstaGram, SnapChat, or other social media account for myself. I promise it's not personal.
I've been searching for folks using the in-game invite/search tools - but admit that I couldn't remember how to spell your username and wasn't checking for you. "RedFive" didn't pull you up, just like "GreenGoo" isn't actually our GreenGoo. I'll try searching again for "Red51ve" and see if I can find you. It might be fun to do some team play - but I'm a handicap since I can't talk back. As a result, I'd make a terrible leader and would need to follow you as you might expect a bot to...
I don't know if there are 'quick chat' options like pressing "M" to say "Medic!" or "E" to say "Enemy Spotted!" but if there are, I'd use those too.

I try to be kinda good on weeknights. Note, you say EST, I assume you mean EDT because it is that time of year (I hate being corrected on that, but technically correct and all that...). I can play, but multiplayer when my family is in bed isn't very nice. I close the office doors, but my squeaky voice still penetrates.Paingod wrote:I don't think any of you are up when I'm up. In case you hadn't seen or figured this all out, one first aid kill will heal you to 75% from any health level. Bandages give +10% up to 75% max. Painkillers and energy drinks(?) can heal you beyond 75% but are slower heal over time. If you take multiple painkillers/energy drinks and the bar gets into the third section you get a movement speed boost. I think the fourth section is even faster.Paingod wrote:With few options, I hunkered down in a corner and healed myself. First Aid, Bandages, Painkillers, anything I had.

The bunny hopping is because he was trying to get a punch headshot on you, which is a one hit kill if you're not wearing a helmet.Paingod wrote: Highlights:

I was laying low the last two days to get some practice in. I'm generally around 8:30PM - 12AM. I'm getting to the final circle a lot, but I need to man up and stop trying to hide in the grass. It only works so long.Redfive wrote:Are we Steam friends Paingod? I hopped in the discord channel at about 9:30 CST last night but didn't see anyone or any in my friends list playing.

Well, that's different. I had no idea. I'm guessing you can't just aim up to hit someone's noggin? Makes me glad I was dodging, bobbing, weaving, and circling him as I hit him. Kinda scary to think he just needed a lucky hit to do me in.wonderpug wrote:The bunny hopping is because he was trying to get a punch headshot on you, which is a one hit kill if you're not wearing a helmet.Paingod wrote: Highlights:

No problem. Probably the best way to meet up is to d/l discord and join the OO channel (it's not just for voice, you can chat too) and then you can see which of us is in the PUBG channel. That's I think my go to thing for 'making myself available' to play teams.Paingod wrote:I'm not Steam friends with anyone, mostly because it kind of wierds me out to have people seeing what I'm up to and to be able to see what other people are up to; there's a mild but uncomfortable anxiety I get when I'm 'friends' with someone but I'm opting to do my own thing and I feel like they might think I'm dissing them. Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
#7. Played possum the whole game, found a great spot in the ruins with decent los with my akm and 4x scope, but never got a shot at anyone. Later while moving with the circle had a clear shot at a dude, HUGE in the scope, 3 shots, game is reporting 0 hp xp. Sigh. As the circle shrunk, I was in a bad position as I was going to have to move before anyone in the building off to my right did. I managed to get inside the circle again, heal up (DAMN that circle hurts when it gets small), drink a red bull and started scanning around. As my view turns 360 it stops and rests on a dude squating beside a tree looking down his barrel at me. Blam blam. Game over.
edit: Watching my death video, I scan past this guy 2 times before spotting him on the 3rd. He's in full view the first two times and it's only by the third time that I realize what I'm seeing. I've needed new glasses for some time and have been putting it off. I'm starting to think it might be a priority now.
I also need bifocals. Damn it.
I was wearing a full lvl 3 helm and at about 80-90% health. Sigh.
I think the entirety of my thought process was "damn".
Still, I knew I was in a tactically poor situation and unlikely to survive, at the same time, the game let me live long enough to start to hope.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
I watched a YouTube video the other day that pretty well explained the bullet physics in this game. I found it pretty informative, but haven't had a chance to put it into practice at all. I assume I'm either not leading enough, not lifting enough, or both. At any range over ~75m you've got to start aiming off your target slightly, and increasingly with distance. They also steady their shots by holding their breath. Again, I suck at this so I'm not a guide. It's just what I've seen. I need a lot of practice at my long range game. I had someone snipe me with a UMP9 last night, so I'm guessing there's some skill there.GreenGoo wrote:#7. Played possum the whole game, found a great spot in the ruins with decent los with my akm and 4x scope, but never got a shot at anyone. Later while moving with the circle had a clear shot at a dude, HUGE in the scope, 3 shots, game is reporting 0 hp xp. Sigh.
I think I've got the stealthy short-range game going pretty good, but it seems easier. I'm sure the things I'm doing are making other people jump-scare, though. Who doesn't love opening a supposedly "safe" door to a shotgun blast in the face?

Typically ELO starts at 1200 and it would keep moving until you reach your real skill rating. How steady it becomes depends on their algorithm. There is a formula for Chess but it doesn't really apply here since it isn't 1v1.Paingod wrote:I had a middling night, more good than bad, and since I'm still learning I'll take that as a great thing. Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Given that I've only played a couple of nights and am rusty on my competitive FPS skills, I'd like to think I'll keep getting oiled. I have no idea what my 'true' skill rating might be. I know I'm still learning with each game, and am worse than a complete novice at combat over 60m.
I'm really enjoying this. More than I thought I might. I'm generally not a FPS person, nor do I typically enjoy PvP - but the recipe here is just right. A combination of a huge map, spurts of intensity, loot randomness, chaos, and a game element that prevents dickery like camping in one spot all day long.
I find myself replaying scenarios in my head, trying to think of ways I could have done it better ... and enjoying little moments like watching that burning Land Rover roll past me with the driver KO'd by an artillery shell.
Now - where are all these people finding Level 3 Armor, Helmets, and Backpacks? I don't think I've found any of those except on corpses. I also don't think I've found a single AR suppressor.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
I meant to comment when you posted about the rating system. I too thought it looked familiar, in that any ratings I EVER see in the 1200 range automatically make me think of the chess rating system. Which is interesting, because while I loved chess as a kid, I've never played as an adult and don't really know how the rating system works (outside of a general intuition).coopasonic wrote:Typically ELO starts at 1200 and it would keep moving until you reach your real skill rating. Rating in a game like PUBG has got to be tough. There are just so many factors that may or may not be beyond the player's control. That said, with enough hours, things are going to level out in a decent approximation of an accurate rating. It helps that the ratings are not objective, but subjective to others also playing. i.e. your rating is based on everyone else's rating, and again, with enough hours, all the random factors tend to flatten out.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
For the record I absolutely despised my entire game time in my #7 ranking. I was, again, playing sim-looter, and even though I went looking for trouble, I found none until the very end. I admit that part of my is already falling out of love with the game.
If I wanted to play a pvp combat centric game, there are better games out there. If I wanted to play a survival game, there are better games out there. If I wanted to play a solo game, then clearly I'm in the wrong game.
As I noted right from the start, the one thing this game has going for it is the human element. And I just don't find it particularly engaging. And that is totally on me, I get it. My encounters are shooting a distracted player in the head, or getting shot from out of camera. The number of gun battles that were engaging have been about 10%. Maybe as low as 5%.
I still have a lot of fun playing as a team, as there is a teamwork aspect that I miss from my sports days, but I'm less and less interested in firing up the game for a quick solo match or two.
I don't regret spending the money, and I'm not completely off the game by any means. I'm just in a bit of a funk, and since I've only had the game for a short while, that seems incredibly short amount of time to start losing interest.
Maybe I just went too hard at it and need to dial it down a bit, but I don't think I even played yesterday and have only done 1 round today.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
As Oct and others will tell you, there are maps that highlight vehicle and high quality loot spawning areas. The maps aren't completely random. Areas that I tend to find myself in usually cap at the level 2 stuff. Very rarely do I find a lvl 3 helmet or armor. Scopes...scopes are the holy grail in my games because they are just so rare in the less contested areas. A 2x is nice find. A 4x is a godsend. Anything above that was either brought in from outside in a player's backpack, or was a random jackpot rng.Paingod wrote: Now - where are all these people finding Level 3 Armor, Helmets, and Backpacks? So just look online for loot maps. I haven't bothered yet, but if I get frustrated enough with never having a scope, I probably will.
I like vehicles. There is a time when driving a vehicle is not a bad idea, but as the circle shrinks, it's just a bullet magnet. Before then though, I enjoy driving around.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
I rarely play more than three rounds solo, usually two.
I just don't have the attention span (I guess?) to stick with really any game for very long solo. I mean in one single session and not over time coming back on multiple days.
Playing with friends, however, is still very engaging and I'm likely to run several rounds (like we did) or I'm likely to stay logged into ESO or whatever MMO I might be playing if I have others around to hang with.
Played MOO IV with my dad last night but it appears I didn't miss anyone (except Paingod, but I wasn't sure how to look for him).
Hopefully we can get a squad for some rounds this evening.

Loot Map
I can confirm from experience that I have found good gun loot in both the prison and the power plant.

I had seen the map, but I guess I didn't know there was such a drastic shift. I thought it was just "better odds" not "certainly will be" ... when I drop, a dozen people head for the Prison. I usually aim for the little rectangular compound to the west of it, hoping to catch someone who looted the prison unwares as they move across the map to the other side.

3 of us landed on the prison at the same time. I thought, AHA! I'll run up the hill to the house and get everything to myself and come down swinging. I found a smoke grenade and maybe level 1 body armour.Redfive wrote:Loot Map

I came down the hill, spotted/got spotted, ran, dumped my smoke grenade between me and him, ran into a house and started looting, opened a door that I thought was a closet. It wasn't. It was a main floor balcony looking out directly at the other player. I kid you not. I open what I think is a closet and I'm nicely framed in the doorway as he opens up with his akm.
Not my best showing.

Corpses are the best places to find loot. It saves all the trouble of looking for it yourself!Paingod wrote:Now - where are all these people finding Level 3 Armor, Helmets, and Backpacks? I don't think I've found any of those except on corpses. I also don't think I've found a single AR suppressor.
I'm kind of like you in this regard. I am a care bear. I do enjoy single player shooters that are more open world like Far Cry. I don't play Call of Duty or anything like that. Depending on how you look at it the results are so meaningless, that a loss is no big deal, but you can still revel in a top ten finish or someday I imagine that chicken dinner.Paingod wrote:I'm really enjoying this. My watch keeps telling me I am burning calories playing the game because of my elevated heart rate, so it's exercise!

You'll be happy to know that I tried the right click method of looting, but I think it's slightly slower than sliding, although my opinion is not conclusive proof.

They should mark "balcony" doors similarly to exterior doors if they haven't. All the interior doors are solid white. All the exterior doors have a bronze mail slot in the middle. I use these indicators to determine which doors to open and which to leave closed. I'd be pretty annoyed if I opened a white door and found myself casting a beautiful target.GreenGoo wrote:I came down the hill, spotted/got spotted, ran, dumped my smoke grenade between me and him, ran into a house and started looting, opened a door that I thought was a closet. Because each right click seems to be followed by your guy doing a looting animation, whereas when you swipe, he doesn't bother to sync up with each item being looted.coopasonic wrote:How can a click/release be slower than click/drag/release? I mean I guess if your right click finger is slower...
I'll try to remember to test.
