While taking photos alongside military leaders and their spouses before a dinner at the White House, President Donald Trump made an ambiguous statement, citing "the calm before the storm."
"You guys know what this represents? Maybe it's the calm before the storm," Trump said at the photo op Thursday night, following a meeting with his top military commanders.
When reporters present asked what he meant, Trump replied: "It could be, the calm, the calm before the storm."
Reporters asked if the storm was related to Iran or ISIS.
Trump replied: "We have the world's great military people in this room, I will tell you that. And uh, we're gonna have a great evening, thank you all for coming."
When asked again what he meant, Trump said only: "You'll find out."
Reporters in the room asked for a hint, but Trump concluded the questioning.
"Thank you everybody," Trump said.
The White House has not immediately responded to CNN's request for comment or clarification.
Geopolitics was so boring back when presidents acted all presidential and tried to make their citizens feel safe and such. This sort of stuff makes things feel much more interesting than they probably are.

I had someone ask me (seriously) last night if I was boycotting the NFL like he was. I laughed at him and said no. It doesn’t matter what the NFL or the players do - I’m watching. They could ritually sacrifice fans at the start of each half, and I’d still watch.
The notion that I would take *any* action in my life based on whether a football player stands, kneels, sits or stretches while a song plays is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of.

As of Wednesday, half of Puerto Ricans had access to drinking water and 5 percent of the island had electricity, according to statistics published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency on its Web page documenting the federal response to Hurricane Maria.
By Thursday morning, both of those key metrics were no longer on the Web page.

I received my 401k statement and my (8yo) kid's 529 fund statement last night, and I actually thought for an instant "I wonder if our society will still be around and structured in such a way that I will be able to collect on these." I mean, I am not seriously worried about it, but I'm semi-semi-seriously worried about it.

the events this past week has really hurt me in a way that I've never felt. I didn't have anyone connected to the shooting, but from the moment I saw the news, I have been inspired.
for me, this isn't about politics. i don't even know if this is the proper forum or thread to post it in. I also don't mean for this to sound like I'm taking a shot at Rip or anyone else with differing opinions or beliefs.
but I personally can't sit around any longer and bitch about what's happening to our country and world. I have a son that I believe I need to show that what is happening is not right. that sounds simplistic, but that's just the way I feel.
racism, homophobia, sexism, slaughtering innocent people, etc etc etc can't continue. I need to make a difference for my son, hopefully grandkids, and everyone on here's kids.
I don't know where to start, but I just can't take it any longer. I'm not part of the solution by bitching and not taking action.

But where do you start? My biggest thing is trying to model behaviors of inclusion, empathy, and the unwillingness to tolerate racism/sexism/homophobia/etc. Show my kids what I mean by being kind, charitable, and loving so they have an understanding of what that actually means. The challenge comes when that the simple act of being kind or tolerant somehow becomes a political statement. I've had the "real 'Murican" members of my family tell my 8 year old - my 8 year old - to stop being so politically correct because she mentioned that she is concerned that a couple of her school friends might get deported (they won't, but that's beside the point).
When basic human decency and respect gets shot down as a political belief? I'm not sure where you go from there.

It was a year ago today that the Access Hollywood "Grab 'Em by the Pussy" tape came out. For days afterwards, Trump's approvals tanked and the election seemed like it would be Clinton cakewalk. Those days in October 2016 must have been the last time I felt secure about America's future.
In direct response, WikiLeaks went full steam on its campaign of selective leaks and disinformation. The media ate it up, apparently in the interest of keeping the horserace exciting.

It would be very amusing if the football fan base suddenly became super progressive because of this.
As a super-progressive, I stopped watching football two years ago when the links to early deaths and brain disease became too strong to ignore. I didn't make a big deal about it....I just stopped paying attention.

My wife and I got involved in local politics and in our local Indivisible chapter. It makes me feel a little better.
What Trump says has no bearing on what Trump does.
Hell, what Trump says has no bearing on what Trump says next about the same thing. I think he counts on his followers having such effective blinders that they can't see anything but today's stance.
