I am just now becoming aware that if you don't wash your beard, it begins to smell. Time for the razor. Cleaning facial hair was not part of the deal.
One of the tactile joys of going bearded is lathering up your entire head in one giant froth of shampoo.
Shampoo? I use anti-bacterial soap. I assumed shampoo isn't designed to handle bacteria that might grow from the assortment of foods and fluids that my facial hair accumulates that in turn feed bacteria which are the source of any smell. I admit I've never had a beard longer than 1/2 an inch, so maybe Pantene is needed for the foot-long ones.

I had a few inches of beard up until Saturday, when I trimmed it down to a thin coverage. The setting I put it at turned out to be perfect for a return to the itchy stage.

I used to grow a full beard every winter, but the radiation gave me a couple of permanent bald spots on my face, so that's a no-go. I can't even grow a full goatee, as one of the bald spots is just on the right side of my chin. I look awful without facial hair, so I can't shave completely, and I don't want a pornstache.

So I grow a full goatee and shave the left side to match the bald spot on the right. It gives me a narrow chin goatee with a hybrid horseshoe/Fu-Manchu mustache. It's a little odd, but it's the best option.

My 71 year old father is retiring as of this Friday and he's already tasked me with (1) getting him an iPhone, (2) getting him an internet connection at his house and (3) finding him a laptop. I've feared this day for 10+ years.

Also, my dad has never used an iPhone or a laptop.

He's retired, why doesn't he do these things? Of course my 75 YO father has been retired for 20 years and does all of these things for himself and then I end up cleaning up a mess. I can't complain, though. I get to spend time with them and he'll still crawl under a car or climb on top of a house with me (and does so at a faster pace) so I owe him whatever he needs.

My parents have true high-speed internet at their house via cable. But up until apparently this coming Friday, didn't care. But yeah, thanks for rubbing that in. I suppose I'll be able to go over there and get my STEAM games via their connection.

Although that's the other thing. My dad just wanted me to add him to my 2GB / month cell phone plan. The man has never used a smart device in his whole life and he thinks I'm to add him to my intentionally limited data plan knowing full-well has has no internet at his house? Believe what you've heard - as they get older, they're turning into teenagers.

My dad is paying $150 a month for a landline in their house because, reasons. He...doesn't understand technology in the same way that I don't understand how to build tunnels 10 stories underground in NYC. If I sent him to get a phone, internet connection and/or laptop, he'd get fleeced.

If you're the tech support for this endeavor, I'd work out the easiest way to lock that laptop down so he can't install 37 coupon apps, 43 search bars, 12 kinds of free antivirus, and 161375 malware packages.

I pay $50 a year to keep ESET NOD32 on three of my parents computers that have important stuff on them. Some of the best $50 a year I spend. It's not perfect but nothing is.

Indeed, I'd suggest a decent Chromebook for that reason alone. Obviating the need for malware-prevention and cleanup is a HUGE plus.

If we choose the superior time DST still goes away. The configuration is irrelevant. Our schedules are arbitrary or perhaps variable. The disruptive change twice a year to the chosen norm is what's puppies.

The time change has never affected me in any physical or mental way but I do prefer the summer time schedule so guess thats DST. I want it to stay on this all the time. I prefer a darker morning and longer day MUCH more. Florida is right now passing laws to stay on the new time . Would be nice if we did here. I think we were looking into staying but I think its for the crappier winter normal time which I hate.

EDIT: Looked it up and we want to stay on DST also so thats all cool.

We don't need to. 8-5 will be 8-5 and either darker later in the winter or in the summer. Pick one and stick with it.

I may just be misreading you, but you seem to be saying that there's no difference between the two configurations for an 8-5 job. I'm saying that Daylight Savings is more beneficial all year round

Daylight Savings Time:
  • in summer: fine in the morning, extra sunlight to enjoy in the evenings
  • in winter: dark in the morning, extra sunlight to enjoy in the evenings
Standard Time:
  • summer: wasted sunlight before people wake up in the morning, less sunlight to enjoy in the evenings
  • winter: godawful days in Boston where you commute to work in the dark, stay indoors all day, then commute home in the dark, never once seeing the sun
That last bit is why Standard Time needs to die a firey death.

+1. It's already the standard 8 months out of the year. Standard time is what sucks. That, and having to change the clocks twice a year.

MA has a permanent DST bill in effect (actually, we would join the Atlantic time zone), but it stipulates that a majority of other northeastern states have to take the same move. Since nobody wants to go first it won't go anywhere.

Yes! I go to be -0/+30 minutes and wake up +/- 15 minutes. The change is double plus unfun.

It's not that they're that rigidly scheduled. It's that it's a completely unnecessary pain in the ass. Getting up an hour earlier throws off the body clock something fierce for many people, and leads to a 24% spike in heart attacks. We're literally killing people for this.

Plus my kids are harder to get up to get to school.

Besides, you live in Indiana - did something change, or do you still not follow DST rules?

Reuters
Switching over to daylight saving time, and losing one hour of sleep, raised the risk of having a heart attack the following Monday by 25 percent, compared to other Mondays during the year, according to a new U.S. study released on Saturday.

By contrast, heart attack risk fell 21 percent later in the year, on the Tuesday after the clock was returned to standard time, and people got an extra hour's sleep.

The not-so-subtle impact of moving the clock forward and backward was seen in a comparison of hospital admissions from a database of non-federal Michigan hospitals. It examined admissions before the start of daylight saving time and the Monday immediately after, for four consecutive years.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I think my body is as borderline autistic as much as I am. My insides have been cramped (and worse) all day in addition to being exhausted and foggy and I will feel these effects to some extent for a couple of weeks while my body adjusts.

It's generally accepted that DST Monday is an unhealthy day.

It changed years ago. And it was changed in a way that showcases the absolute brilliance of Indiana politicians: the entire state now observes DST, but counties were allowed to choose per-county which time zone they wanted to be in.

And I know it's accepted, I've just never quite been able to get it to click in my head that an hour's lost sleep can be so significant to some people. I'm not saying that they're wrong or it isn't true, I've just never been able to imagine it. The amount of sleep I get varies between 6 and 8 hours every night, and two nights a week I sleep for four, wake up for two and drive 25 miles, then turn right around, come home, and sleep another 2-3. Those two days suck, but not anywhere near the way people report a lost hour feels.

Again, not saying they're imagining it, just that it sounds really, really odd to me.

Never bothered me either but I can see it bothering others. My sleep is so terrible and varied as to not notice it. Ill sleep 6 hours then 6 hours then 3 hour then 12 hours then be up 2-3 days no sleep then 6 hours then 14 hours then 4 then 4 ....just on and on ..no rhyme or reason.

Also, my dad has never used an iPhone or a laptop.
good luck

My mother was very good on a computer. My father would forget how to log on. He was a very bright man but he just could not get the hang of computers.
My old man would disassemble them and intuitively solder back together circuit boards that were failing in our house based on his knowledge of the way the world works in order to avoid buying new boards but UIs and OSes... Not so much... We did get him to move from AtariDOS to 3.1 to 95/OSR2/7 like pulling teeth but he's not adapting to 10 so well. This will one day be me. Only I don't have knowledge of stuff to fall back on.
