I wonder if Mueller-averse Republicans are aware that the intelligence agencies of every Western nation are focused like a laser on this administration's dealings with Putin?
Probably not would be my guess. Heads in the sand and all that.

Gawd, I hope so. They (the governments of "the West") may become our last hope for redemption if we end up in a situation where Mueller is forced to fail to finish his investigation. I fear Putin's arm has grown very long indeed...

Too dangerous. I am sure every government is trying to figure out Trump. Our European allies have the most to lose.

I could swear that Trump would have reigned in Giuliani by now because he's stealing a lot of the spotlight from his boss. Trump hates to loose ratings. Makes me think Giuliani was given an order to "Get out there and dance like a monkey. Don't let up until we're out of danger."

First the last thing you want to do is start a discussion of reading between the lines. That is the epitome of how fake news is created.

Second, it was hardly just a photo op.

For Clinton, the rhetoric reflects genuine disappointment and frustration from a tumultuous term as secretary of state during which cooperation between Moscow and Washington briefly soared, only to come crashing to Earth after Putin’s reelection as president in 2012 following a four-year hiatus, according to current and former U.S. officials involved in Russian policymaking at the time. Clinton, who began her tenure by famously offering a “reset” of Russian relations, would end it by publicly blasting Putin’s government on issues including alleged vote-rigging in Russia and Putin’s support for Syria’s authoritarian president, Bashar al-Assad.
Putin would fire back with repeated attacks against her, often injecting an unusually personal tone into the growing diplomatic rift. The exchanges helped cement an adversarial view of Clinton on the Russian side that may explain, more than any other single factor, the apparent efforts by Russian operatives to influence the election by hacking email accounts of senior Clinton staff members, longtime Kremlin observers say.

The reset button photo was 2009, so there was three years before Putin tanked it once he got back to the presidency.

Wow Rip. I wish you could hear yourself in defending Drumpf like this.

How deep does he need to take Putin's dick exactly before you realize you were conned into voting a Russian asset into the Presidency?

Not only did the self proclaimed winners of the Cold War leave the gates open for the Russians to wander right in, but they were waiting for them with blankets and vodka.

I don't think they will ever see it as they were conned. They think "Great! So Russia was paying for adverting and sabotaging in all the right ways! The Great businessman! Russia is now our friend, protecting us from socialism and we are using them." and they happily endorse NO COLLUSION.

When they see Trump become an autocrat supported by a Congress that gets in line, they blame the democrats for laying the ground work for authoritarianism and then praise Trump for using it for AMERICA!

They aren't being conned. They're thralls. Thugs in a nearly literal sense of the word. If they were Hindi Indian it would be literal.

I'm not defending him. I think allowing Russia back into the G-7(8) would be a huge mistake. I am just pointing out that he isn't the first moron to think they could get Russia to play nice.

I was the one who wanted to go after Russia full force after the Crimea invasion. All I saw from you guys was shrugs and comments about how we couldn't really do much.

If we couldn't do much about them invading and annexing territories I fail to see what we could do to properly punish them for what they are doing now.

In fact I would submit that much of what they did as far as election interference was a direct result of largely getting a pass for what should have been considered an act of war.

Not surprisingly we still aren't really doing anything that causes them the slightest bit of fear. Just a lot of big talk with nothing to back it up.

I think he likes pardoning people because it's the most king-like activity he can do as president. People come asking for his help, he waves his hand and it happens... so long as it helps deliver a message or involves photo ops with celebrities.

If I read Rip's message right, he believes the problem with the "reset" was that it failed and that Russia and the U.S. returned to a pre-reset adversarial stance, with us criticizing Russia for rights violations and its support of the butcher Assad and Puting back to badmouthing the U.S.

So where does that leave us now? Rip presumably prefers Trump's approach to HRC's. Obviously we don't see Putin and Trump criticizing each other... and that's the win?

Russia has gotten worse and has become emboldened, and Trump is doing everything he can to reward them for it. In the meantime Trump has played into Putin's hands by weakening our alliances and clearing space for him and parties he supports to make gains in Europe. Is THAT the win?

It's a win for someone, certainly...

Goalposts.

In 2009, trying to engage with Russia was about trying to establish new terms on a thoroughly Western basis after the Bush administration had basically thrown up its hands about Moscow. The reset was the soft-power counterpart to an expanded NATO. It was an attempt to bring Russia in from the cold.

In 2017-18, rolling over and giving Russia everything it wants on sanctions and spying and Syria and the G-7 is *very* different. It's clear that Trump is doing everything he can to make Putin happy on Putin's terms.

Surely you can see the difference between the two.

Pardon him for what, exactly?
President Donald Trump said Friday he was considering granting a posthumous pardon for Muhammad Ali — prompting a lawyer for his estate and family to say thanks, but no thanks: The boxing great had his criminal conviction overturned by the Supreme Court nearly 50 years ago.

"We appreciate President Trump's sentiment, but a pardon is unnecessary. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali in a unanimous decision in 1971," Ron Tweel, who has represented Ali and his family since 1986, told NBC News. "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed."

So obviously the solution is the elect a Russian sympathizer to try to undermine the western alliance and roll back the sanctions we put in place after they annexed Crimea? Rip that doesn't even make any sense and you know your grasping at straws. Pretend it's Obama's fault all you want, but Obama isn't the one who was aided by Russia every step of his election, and Obama isn't the one in office now trying to *reward* Russia for annexing Crimea.

Surely there must be a tiny shred of the old Republican that you used to be that's screaming inside because it's clear now your champion sold our country out, right?

Plus let's just pause over the whole idea.

Trump was going to pardon Ali for taking a difficult, principled stand against Vietnam and refusing to be drafted.

At least he didn't kneel during the national anthem, though. That would have deserved deportation.

DONALD TRUMP To NFL Players ...TELL ME WHO I SHOULD PARDON!
Trump was speaking with reporters in front of the White House when he talked about his new plan to help determine who should be pardoned.

"What I'm thinking to do, you have a lot of people in the NFL in particular ... they're not proud enough to stand for our national anthem ..."

"I'm gonna ask all of those people to recommend to me ... people that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system and I'm gonna ask them to recommend to me, people that were unfairly treated, friends of theirs or people that they know about and im gonna take a look at those applications."

"And if I find and my committee finds that they were unfairly treated, then we will pardon them or at least let them out."

There is a pardon committee in the executive branch, which traditionally handles pardon requests. Trump has largely done whatever he wanted and ignored the committee, but it exists. It's not really "his" committee, though.

:emoticon of index finger pointing up, mouth agape, but no words coming out:

Edit... Finds others words...

Mar 21, 2018 01:56:14 PM I called President Putin of Russia to congratulate him on his election victory (in past, Obama called him also). The Fake News Media is crazed because they wanted me to excoriate him. They are wrong! Getting along with Russia (and others) is a good thing, not a bad thing

Nov 11, 2017 07:43:36 PM Does the Fake News Media remember when Crooked Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, was begging Russia to be our friend with the misspelled reset button? Obama tried also, but he had zero chemistry with Putin.

Nov 11, 2017 07:16:05 PM Met with President Putin of Russia who was at #APEC meetings. Good discussions on Syria. Hope for his help to solve, along with China the dangerous North Korea crisis.

Jul 9, 2017 07:31:23 AM Sanctions were not discussed at my meeting with President Putin. Nothing will be done until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved!
