The story bears repeating after the indictment of a top Senate official over his contacts with reporters, including one from the Times with whom he had a romantic relationship.
The Rosenthal standard on conflicts was shaped by a remarkably similar case decades ago. Soon after a woman who had covered politics in Philadelphia was hired by the Times, a story from Philly said she had a secret affair with a politician she covered and accepted expensive gifts from him.
Rosenthal asked the woman if the story was true and, when she replied yes, immediately told her to clean out her desk and said she would never again work for the paper.
Word of the incident spread quickly through the newsroom, and several female reporters complained to Rosenthal. They argued that the woman was treated unfairlyand, at which point, Abe raised his finger for silence and said something to this effect: “I don’t care if you f–k an elephant on your personal time, but then you can’t cover the circus for the paper.”
The meeting was over, case closed.

The governor called on the General Assembly to repeal 13 job licenses and replace them with less restrictive requirements that protect the public for the following:
Auctioneers, only require registration and bonding.
Barbers, only require certification from a licensed barber school, passage of examination, minimum hours of training, and registration with the State Board of Barber Examiners.
Cemetery Broker/Cemetery Salesperson, only require passage of relevant examination, 60 hours of instruction and registration.
Campground Membership Salesperson, only require registration with the State Real Estate Commission.
Natural Hair Braiding License, eliminate this license.
Orthotic fitter/Orthotist/Pedorthist/Prosthetist, only require credentialing, passage of an education program, training, and minimum hours of training.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Only a quarter of U.S. adults in a recent survey could fully identify factual statements - as opposed to opinion - in news stories, the Pew Research Center found in a study released on Monday.

The research showed Republicans and Democrats were also more likely to think news statements are factual when the statements appeal to their side, even if the statements were opinions.

The elections director for Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach told county clerks in a conference call Tuesday to continue enforcing a proof of citizenship law that a federal judge ruled unconstitutional.
Bryan Caskey told the clerks not to make any changes until they receive written instruction otherwise. Danedri Herbert, a spokeswoman for Kobach, said the office needs time to fully review the court’s 118-page ruling before understanding it completely.
U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson made clear in her Monday ruling the documentary proof of citizenship requirement can’t be enforced.
“Defendant’s well-documented history of avoiding this court’s orders, and providing confusing notices and information on the state’s websites in conjunction with this court’s rulings, warrant specific compliance measures,” Robinson wrote.

Demographics is destiny, but maybe not the destiny you think is inevitable.The Census Bureau has projected that whites could drop below 50 percent of the population around 2045, a relatively slow-moving change that has been years in the making. But a new report this week found that whites are dying faster than they are being born now in 26 states, up from 17 just two years earlier, and demographers say that shift might come even sooner.
What does it mean for the political map? Some experts say that rapid demographic change became a potent issue in the 2016 presidential race — and helped drive white voters to support Donald Trump.
Of the 26 states where deaths now exceed births for whites, 13 voted for Trump and 13 voted for Hillary Clinton. Four are states that flipped from President Barack Obama in 2012 to Trump in 2016 — Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida. But it is not clear how demographic change will affect politics in the future.
“People say demographics is destiny and there’ll be more people of color — all that is true,” said Jennifer Richeson, a social psychologist at Yale University. “But they also say the US is going to become more progressive and we don’t know that. We should not assume that white moderates and liberals will maintain current political allegiances, nor should we expect that the so-called nonwhite group is going to work in any kind of coalition.”

Despite demographic change, whites — and in particular less educated whites — will still make up the bulk of eligible voters in the country for a while. Whites without a bachelor’s degree will make up 44 percent of eligible voters in 2020, said Ruy Teixeira, a political scientist who did a broad study of demography and politics this spring. College-educated whites will be about 23 percent. Teixeira said Republicans could continue to win presidential elections and lose the popular vote through 2036 if they did even better among whites who had not graduated from college, while other voting patterns held steady.
That is giving politicians incentives to emphasize issues like immigration and race, where there are the biggest differences in views by education. A class divide has been growing for years among whites. In 1988, there was no difference between whites with a college degree and those without, Teixeira said. Both voted for George H.W. Bush over Michael Dukakis by a 20-point margin. By 2016, Clinton lost noncollege whites by 31 points, double Obama’s 2012 loss, while carrying college-educated whites by 7 points.
“This is a real sea change,” Teixeira said. “This is why Republicans have been able to weather these demographic changes, entirely on the backs of white noncollege voters.”

I mean hell, based on this standard couldn’t a “city” divide itself leaving behind some empty blocks and creating a brand new one that is debt free?
And it’s a dick move. I live in Montgomery County Maryland, there is already a distinct difference in the quality of the public schools, and some of the wealthy areas want to break away from the county school district. That would leave the county district with considerably less money while keeping the oldest and poorest performing schools.
There is no empathy or compassion.
