Re: Random randomness
Well, I've upset another couple of christians.
A 90+ year old man and a 75+ year old woman came to my front door to try to give one of their pamphlets. Before the old guy could remove it from his pocket I told him I was a pagan. His look was priceless. Then I said "For real. I really am a pagan." He says "You don't believe in God?"
I go "No. Not your god". Then I closed the door on both of them with their mouths wide open.
I have since looked out front to see if he died out there but they were gone.

Re: Random randomness
Apple stopped making the iPod 4 years ago, 3 years after Jobs died.
They have since stopped making the nano or...the other one, both of which were niche items to begin with, mostly for exercising.
While the iPods were more expensive than other MP3 players, they were still relatively cheap.
If your phone is under warranty and something goes wrong, you get a whole new phone.
If it's not under warranty, why haven't you bought the new phone yet?
I don't know wtf an airport router is.
Now I'm curious what their policies were before Jobs died, because most of what daehawk describes sounds exactly like Apple for the last 20 years, but what do I know? The only Apple product I've ever purchased was a nano, years ago. And that was for my wife.

I've just learned that plastic bags aren't supposed to be thrown in my single source recycle bin. I've been fucking that up for a decade, which I'e otherwise been perfect when it comes to not contaminating my bin. Fortunately, I rarely put bags in the recycling, opting to reuse them until such a time as I hit a crazy high volume.
Now I have to pay attention to which grocers have a bag recycling program.

Help Us Make a Difference
Meijer created a reusable shopping bag made from recyclable materials in 2007 as a symbol of our focus on green choices. We also offer customers an opportunity to recycle plastic grocery bags in store.

Yeah, I gotta make a commitment to buy and carry a bunch of bags.
That and I'm sure I'm blind to whatever recycling station they have set up 'cause "why do they even need this when I can just put the bags in a bin at home."

Even more specifically

But I think the post I have on my fridge at home is more exhaustive of what not to include because it also mentions that mail with plastic windows is OK but cardboard with food/grease (such as a pizza box) and teflon is not. Of course, things may have changed since I put that insert on my fridge...

Why don't you just get paper bags? Those are recyclable for sure. Plus you can take popcorn in them to your co-workers on Fridays and they will love you. For the popcorn...

Re: Random randomness
Make sure you eat it in moderation
A verdict has been reached in the ongoing case of Colorado man Wayne Watson, who sued the manufacturer and retailers of microwave buttered popcorn that caused him to develop "popcorn lung" after eating two bags daily for 10 years.
Jurors awarded Watson $7 million in damages; the verdict came after a day and half of deliberations in Denver Federal Court, reports CBS Denver. Watson, 59, was diagnosed with respiratory problems in 2007 after years of inhaling the smell of artificial butter.
The jury found the manufacturer of the popcorn, Gilster-Mary Lee Corp., 80 percent at fault, and the parent companies of the King Soopers' supermarket where he purchased the popcorn - Dillon Foods and Kroger - divided the other 20 percent. The supermarket chain said it would appeal.
...
Prior to the lawsuit, [Dr. Cecile Rose, a lung specialist at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver] wrote a letter to federal agencies warning that an unidentified person may have developed the first case of the disease outside of factory workers.

Re: Random randomness
The equation is more complicated than that. Apparently you have to reuse a paper bag four times to bring its carbon footprint down to that of a single plastic bag. Similarly, I remember reading that you have to use an aluminum coffee mug for over a year before it becomes better for the environment than having used disposable styrofoam every day.

And I put greasy pizza boxes in my black bin. I let the recycling dudes figure it out. Someone has to keep them employed.LordMortis wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 3:07 pm I've just learned that plastic bags aren't supposed to be thrown in my single source recycle bin. Because of this thread I went and read what was acceptable for the black bin in my local recycling situation. Clean, uncontaminated pizza boxes are ok. My question is, who has clean pizza boxes? Pizzerias I guess, but then why are the recycling them? Don't they need them for, you know, pizzas?
I get it, they are just regular cardboard and are totally fine if they aren't greasy, and so they are listed, but they are just cardboard, so of course they are recyclable (barring grease).
For the record, greasy pizza boxes are supposed to go in your green bin, assuming you have a composting program in your area.
Anyone know if the plastic "cling wrap" used for bottled drinks is recyclable? I was just wondering this yesterday, but never bothered to find out.

Judging by your post history and all the electronics problems you have, perhaps your issues aren't with the manufacturers but with the user.

I have to refill my car's flat tire every time I go some place. I only have a little 1 gal compressor and that thing IS LOUD. So while it fills to pressure I stay inside. Anyways I go out and put in some and come in then back out. After the 2nd time I turn to head in and think to myself "Where did that stick on the sidewalk come from? Wasn't there a sec ago"...oHhhhh snake yup yup. Another rat snake but a juvenile. He was about thumb thickness and as long as my arm. I picked him up and he wrapped around my wrist like a bracelet. I brought him in to show the wife. I dont think appreciates how cute snakes are. He even shook his tiny tail to be frightening for her.
I let him go out back again.
I let him go out back again.

Ugh, my teeth are acting up again, specifically the left upper molar that's broken several times. It's been hurting for a full 24 hours now. Usually if I just bit something wrong, it stops after a couple of hours. It may be infected. I've got a bottle of antibiotics I was given by a friend (it's a thing poor people do, go with it), but don't want to waste them if it isn't really infected.

Re: Random randomness
11 year old Daughter just asked "what does pansexual mean?"
That was a fun one.
Actually it wasn't too bad, but this is how it begins.
My 14 year old son refuses to discuss sexuality. Not a great sign. He's had his sex ed at school which is pretty substantive in Ontario, and my wife and I are very open about sexuality (probably because we have none. Hi ooohh!) but he's just not interested. No discussion of girls. No discussion of boys. Nothing. I had already had a sexual relationship (but not sex) by the time I was 13. I find his lack of interest weird. He's clearly embarrassed by the topic, but I don't know that that's all that's holding him back.
Anyway, we're here when he needs/wants us to be.

It was in a Simpsons episode we were watching, if you can believe it. I guess it's not particularly unbelievable. I told her I thought I knew, but the term was a relatively new term (or at least it's usage in the general population) and that I was an old dinosaur, so I was going to look it up to make sure I didn't tell her the wrong thing.
