I'm not all that interested in being perfectly accurate or assigning labels, but if the people that the labels apply to are adamant about it, that's fine with me. Just tell me what terminology you want me to use and I'll use it.

Not necessarily in this case, but I do find that the pursuit of accurate, politically correct terminology is getting to be a bit much. I'm not prejudiced so I'd appreciate it if you didn't lose your shit if I use the wrong terminology. Ignorant is not the same as bigoted. Especially if there hasn't been much time to unignorant yourself yet. Just politely explain the correct usage and I'll do my best.

When terminology is evolving, with multiple groups pursuing their own ideas of what is and isn't appropriate, of course the general public is going to be making mistakes for quite awhile. If the groups themselves don't readily agree then how can they expect others to lock down their usage? Typically, it seems to me, that terminology evolves and standardizes over time, as certain terms go out of favour and everyone just sort of migrates to using the same terminology so that everyone understands what everyone else is talking about.

Yes I'm an old dinosaur. That doesn't make me a monster.

While the terminology is evolving is a time of upheaval. If people would just remain calm and understand that the world at large is not out to denigrate them by using outdated terminology, that would be great. Kthxbye.

Well, maybe some people are, but mostly not the rest of us.

For the record this has never happened to me, so I'm tilting against windmills here, but I *do* read about such things happening, especially on post secondary campuses, and that seems angrier than necessary.

It feels like sexual and gender identity topics seem to be moving at the same pace as technology now, and if you're not fully immersed in the culture growing it, you're very likely to be out of date within a week. Personally, I don't keep track of it. Willful ignorance? Maybe. It just doesn't have any bearing on my day to day life.

I used to watch videos on Youtube all the time but since they've decided to put commercials in them I've cut back drastically. Even the damn news sites videos.

Dear beverage companies. Stop using fake sweeteners in your drinks. I love sugar in my drinks. I like corn sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup just fine. But when you already use sugar or hifruc PLZ dont add fake junk like sucralose and assflame Acesulfame potassium. I know they are in there. I taste them in there. Fake sweeteners make me nausea and I HATE the taste and after taste.

So plz just stop it.

I wonder if Burger King uses some kind of additive in their cooking gas? Or maybe in the meat patty itself? Because when we grilled using gas it had a distinct flavor to it yet BK burgers taste chargrilled like with charcoal. So how do they do it? I worked there as a teen.....cooked even...and I dont know.

I don't think typical cellphones can get much above 100 decibels, which is rock concert level, I read.

Not sure about land line phones.

Which is good. dbt is free to piss them off to his heart's content, while being unlikely to actually injure them. Probably. Maybe.

Thought it looked fun. Its getting great word of mouth and reviews. Would go with the wife to see it.

Theres a scam call here where they say they are collecting for firefighters. People should know by now not a single place calls for donations now days. Older folk who are used to that kind of call will not catch on though.

Wife and daughter went to see it yesterday as my wife was really, really looking forward to it.

I asked how it was but I don't remember her answer.

Actually I'm pretty sure she didn't answer directly. She said she had a splitting headache from the emotional rollercoaster.

I have no idea if that's a positive or negative.

Near $1,000,000 pound Banksy auction item self destructs after sale. :)

https://boingboing.net/2018/10/06/dead- ... innit.html
Banksy's iconic "Girl With Red Balloon" street art went under the hammer at Sotheby's in a custom frame of the artist's own design; moments after it sold for £953,829, a booby-trap kicked in, drawing the canvas into a series of shredder blades built into the frame, rendering it down to a pile of forlorn strips of shredded cloth.

The art speculation market has run white-hot for a decade and more, as inequality floods of dark money has sought highly liquid, tax-invisible assets. As a result, the world's most important art treasures sit in climate controlled containers in "freeports," changing hands without ever moving, seen by no one.

My wife informed me last night that if I died, she'd probably just get a female room mate and give up on men all together. Nothing sexual, just a person she could live with and be friends with. She asked if it would bother me to have a woman helping her raise the kids if I passed away before they left home.

I'm putting this out here in case I suddenly stop posting. You'll know who did it. :ninja:

I had read about Vesuvius and Pompeii and Herculaneum all my life. Always fascinated me. A few years back I read how the heat supposedly popped skulls like eggs in a microwave. Now scientists have more proff.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2018/10 ... ed-skulls/
Petrone and his colleagues were intrigued by the strong red and black residue on some of the bones that could not have come from coins or other metal artifacts, since there were none near this particular site. They used Raman micro spectroscopy to analyze samples for iron and other remnants of blood. There was a very high concentration of iron, most likely derived from victims' bodily fluids, although they could not say definitively that the source was human blood.

Most of the bones were also fractured—another indicator of being exposed to sudden extreme high heat. They especially noted "cracking and explosion" of the skullcaps of many of the skeletons, consistent with forensic cases of bursting skulls, when "expelled brain matter may form a circular pattern around the head." Essentially, the hot pyroclastic flows boiled the soft brain tissue and evaporated the bodily fluids of the unfortunate victims, raising the internal pressure so severely that the skulls quite literally exploded.

That is not a nice way to go, to say the least. But perhaps it was faster than suffocating to death.

Not sure of the point of paying for something this slow except to add to the renters webpage that you have internet service.

Started Firefox last night and it had a 41MB update. 3 hours later it was finished.

Looks like I'll be looking at the tiny phone screen and using my verizon data.
