The madman theory only works if the subject has a sane baseline. Trump doesn't, so feigning insanity gets him nothing.Nixon
Nixon's Chief of Staff, H. R. Haldeman, wrote that Nixon had confided to him:
I call it the Madman Theory, Bob. I want the North Vietnamese to believe I've reached the point where I might do anything to stop the war. We'll just slip the word to them that, "for God's sake, you know Nixon is obsessed about communism. We can't restrain him when he's angry—and he has his hand on the nuclear button" and Ho Chi Minh himself will be in Paris in two days begging for peace.
In October 1969, the Nixon administration indicated to the Soviet Union that "the madman was loose" when the United States military was ordered to full global war readiness alert (unbeknownst to the majority of the American population), and bombers armed with thermonuclear weapons flew patterns near the Soviet border for three consecutive days.
The administration employed the "madman strategy" to force the North Vietnamese government to negotiate an end to the Vietnam War. In July 1969, according to a recently-declassified CIA report, President Nixon may have suggested to South Vietnamese President Thieu that the two paths he was considering were either a nuclear weapons option or setting up a coalition government.
Along the same lines, American diplomats, especially Henry Kissinger, portrayed the 1970 incursion into Cambodia as a symptom of Nixon's supposed instability.
Trump
The theory is believed by some to be a strategy used by U.S. President Donald Trump in dealing with both allied and hostile nations. Jonathan Stevenson argues Trump's strategy may be even less effective than Nixon's because Nixon tried to give the impression that "he'd been pushed too far, implying that he would return to his senses if the Soviets and North Vietnamese gave in." Whereas the North Korean government is unlikely to believe that "Trump would do the same" because his threats are "standard operating procedure", not a temporary emotional reaction.

It's cute how people keep trying to attach intent and rational thought process to Trump's insanity.

Plus, the word triggered has taken on a life of it's own and I'd prefer that the term never be used again about anything, ever, so you've triggered me about triggering me. My point is not that *I* don't like to be "triggered", it's that it has become a derogatory term and used to immediately dismiss anyone's concern about anything. It can literally be used to dismiss anything.
Sorry brah, didn't mean to trigger you about climate change.
And while I used your comment to rant, it's not you specifically that I was ranting about, just the idea that drumpf is some evil genius who is out thinking his opponents and has a master plan has to be put to bed, a gun to it's head, the trigger pulled, then the bed buried at the bottom of the sea.
It was obviously not true 2+ years ago when his proponents were claiming it was, and the evidence of the last 2 years should be enough to shame even his strongest proponents.

I'm kind of hoping he's mentally unraveling as the mounting evidence suggests he's in deep shit and the walls are closing in. Alternatively, I'm more afraid that he's not actually begun to lose it and this is just him operating under his assumptions that everything is super. If that's the case, I'm not sure we'll collectively survive him melting down.

I'm not sure that he understands that the world is not his to command. Not even if you're the president. In fact, there are a lot of laws and rules that make it more difficult in some ways to exert your will upon the world.

Yeah, I am not gender biased as far as I know. Man, woman, green, blue, bald, hairy....this is currently on my car, and kind of sums up my feeling on that:

I learned I was gender biased in 1996
and that I was much less gender biased that most people around me. I've been guarded against perpetuating my own biases for more than 20 years.
I learned about my biases while in the school of education, being asked to note such things in my observations. I saw how those biases were unconsciously institutionalized in the dozens of classrooms I visited as part of "pre-student teaching". It was one of the more eye opening experiences of my college career. Those observations have informed my awareness and interactions ever since.
(I'd say don't put Hillary in front of me again. But truth be told, I'd have to vote for her. She'd still lose Michigan though. Even as the blue wave is pretty deep here, now, I think she'd still lose in rematch here. I'm sad for many around me and blame ZCorn.)

I don't think LM was being serious about 'blaming Z-Corn'. I read that to be sarcastic and not AT ALL the way you took it. I'm not aware of a rivalry between the two of you (I could be wrong). And maybe I haven't properly measured LM, but I pay attention over the years of being on this board, and LM isn't the kind of person to blame other people for the world... certainly not taking jabs at people on the board for 'actually' being to blame. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I thought LM meant that in good humor. Maybe I'm wrong, but I watch LM struggle with his condemnation of Trump even when he doesn't question the condemnation of Trump at all.

I think you will see it's not just my opinion, but perhaps most everyones. GreenGoo's reaction was like mine... (IMO)
LM's problem was that he thought you two had a slightly friendly/familiar/brotherly relationship that wouldn't take the 'I blame Z-Corn' as an attack, when in reality you have obviously been rubbed very wrong by some of the comments he's made about the area you live in.
Your problem is that you see these things as spitwads, and not just (friendly) social nods to past head-bumping.
My problem is that I also hate conflict and I'd like this to be worked out so it doesn't keep happening, but I should probably just shut up.

Hey! West Michigan is a beautiful area. The lake shore is absolutely majestic. Living in South Carolina shouldn't throw stones. West Michigan may have given Devos to the world (sorry already, geez. Trust me I regret that family much more than you) but S.C. gave us Graham among other things so I think we are even.stessier wrote: Fri Nov 30, 2018 10:31 am I'm more upset that you think West MI doesn't deserve ridicule.

Unagi nailed it in saying LM was just playing with someone he thought would play back. You, on the other hand, just come across as someone misdirecting their anger from this whole thing. Whatever has you that upset take a deep breath and let go of the anger so you can focus on a better solution than this.

No, you are not, but since I know LM is much smarter than I am and I am no where close to special needs mentality I figure that one will roll right off him and let it go.Combustible Lemur wrote: Fri Nov 30, 2018 10:52 am Am I the only one offended for the equating of LM with a special needs kid incapable of self responsibility? No anger at all - I was laughing as I typed it. Poking the bee's nest. You really shouldn't shout out your insecurities in this forum.Remus West wrote: Fri Nov 30, 2018 10:58 amHey! All I know is that there's an awful lot of infighting going on when we should be sticking together to fight the caravan and Mueller's fake Russian probe!

No worries (or real anger - thus the smiley). IIRC you assisted me in tossing Chaosraven out an airlock playing BSG at Octocon so you have a TON of good will you can burn through.stessier wrote: Fri Nov 30, 2018 11:04 amNo anger at all - I was laughing as I typed it.
