I can't decide on a new game :(

Post by godhugh »

I'm just about done with GTA: Vice City and I'm on the hunt for a new game. Unfortunately, I can't make up my mind on which one I want. Here are the main candidates:

Battlefield 2
GTA: San Andreas
Hearts of Iron 2
Supreme Ruler 2010
Rise of Nations: Gold Edition

I'm also open to new suggestions. The only genre I'm not interested in right now are MMORPG's, kinda burnt out on those and I'm still playing CoH everyonce in a while as well.

Of that list I'd say Rise of Nations. Great, great game. Best RTS evar.

I give you that advice on the condition you go to my thread and tell me what to buy. :)

Of the games I've played:

Supreme Ruler 2010
Both of these are very good games - especially if you like turn based strategy- but they have a steeper than average learning curves. They're both fairly detailed, and they both offer lots of options for playstyles (economics, diplomacy, etc). SR2010 has a lot more options (military options, economic, diplomatic, domestic, immigration, etc), but is somewhat less polished (there are some major gamebalancing issues, IMO, depending on what region you play, for instance). However, both games are, IMO, fun, and I think both developers have done a good job of supporting the games. I recommend both, although HOI2 more than SR2010.

Oh, and neither have cd protection, meaning I don't have to hunt for the CDs to play the game. :D
Rise of Nations: Gold Edition
I've only played the non-gold version, but it was the most polished of these games, and was very fun. But I don't think I played it for more than a weekend. It just didn't have the sustainability of gameplay that Civ did.

Odd mix of games :)

I'd say nix GTA SA as you just fineshed Vice City. haven't played any of the others. I'd go with BF2 as its the flavor of the month and there are a ton of OO'ers playing ATM. Always more fun to frag people you know.

Battlefield 2 is on your list and you can't decide? I don't understand.
Famine and death and pestilence and war-
I'm pretty sure I heard this one before

If you liked the depth of Vice City their is no choice but to go to San Andreas. The size of the game this time is nothing short of incredible.

I have BF2 but in my spare moments I find myself firing up GTA SA. Maybe once they have sorted the game browser out in BF2 i'll change but at the mo my game of choice has to be GTA SA

I'd have to recommend Hearts of Iron 2 as I am the resitent Paradox Fanboi. After all, I am making my own mod for the game.

Really? I was a HUGE fan of The Stony Road mod for the original HoI. What kind of mod are you putting together?

Thanks for the suggestions so far yall, I've got it narrowed down to HoI 2 and GTA: SA. I really want BF2, but I think I'll let it simmer for a month or so until the bugs get worked out and I've upgraded my system.

Out of interest GTA SA appears no more machine intensive than Vice City. Not sure if they have done this by the draw distance - either way if it ran fine for VC you'll have no issue with SA.
