Re: World internet speeds
Its very helpful in Steam and other online game downloads to install. When games are 60 gig plus its nice to be able to grab ti and play it when you want. Plus when downloading one I can watch videos or such easy.

Re: World internet speeds
Thanks to living in a rare competitive area we get 1,000/1,000 (actual is usually 750/750) internet at a very reasonable price. However, it’s mostly wasted. I’m not sure I have ever seen Steam max out the line. As an example, I hadn’t used Steam in a few weeks so there were 12 games that had patches, including a 3gb (for Pillars I think). A 3gb download should be about ~24 seconds if my math is correct. It took 6 minutes because Steam never came close to reaching the max bandwidth and just outright quit at times. Sometimes I think the Internet is outrunning my hard drives, so Stream pauses to let the computer catch up.
On the other hand, I can, as you said, watch videos simultaneous to downloading without issue. Or two videos. Not that I do. But sometimes my wife watches YouTube while I’m downloading and there isn’t a noticeable issue.
It’s possible you really do use the Internet enough that the high speed would be noticeable, but I suspect we wouldn’t notice much difference at 100. Except that I do need high upload, 100/100 would be fine. The savings is tiny here, so I went the greedy route.
If I didn’t need the upload bandwidth I’d trade with you. Well, maybe not, I think you’re paying as much as we are.
Internet is seriously weird in this country. We’ve paid more for less, now are about in the perfect situation short of a local, government solution, and have relatives still in areas that get zero broadband other than satellite.
Sorry you’re stuck in an area where your options don’t meet your wants.

Broadband in the US is very hit or miss and sketchy to boot. Its a patchwork of companies and tiers. In the end it comes down to money in state and local government employee pockets. Whoever gets wined and dined means thats what their citizens get for broadband. Which means shit.

Yeah, I currently have 150/150, with the option to go to 1000/1000, and I just haven't done it. It's only an extra $20 a month, but I can't identify too many times where the extra bandwidth would be super useful right now.Fitzy wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 10:24 amThanks to living in a rare competitive area we get 1,000/1,000 (actual is usually 750/750) internet at a very reasonable price. Dont tempt Smoove so...you know he is fragile.
Got an email last night at 1am spot on. It said my internet would go out at 2am and stay out until around 4am while they work on it. It then promptly died at 1:01am and was out until 4am. But now my speed is back to normal.

Ive never seen an upload faster than the download.
its funny how life changes you. I was all about speed and dying for more. Now that my wife died I dont care. About the speed or much anything else. In fact I tried getting them to LOWER my speed to 30/4 so it would be $15. Strangely school lunch and such can get that but not a disabled adult. Madness.

I can now add to my title of slowest internet, because starting in November, the speed fluctuates madly between less than advertised and dial up. Poor friends from this forum constantly have to listen to me bitch during PUBG.

I no longer care about internet speeds. I actually begged them to lower me to 30/4 . But no. Asshats.
Anyways saw on the local news just now where EPB that I used to want is raising their 100 meg customers to 300 meg for free and lowering their gig price.

Re: World internet speeds
Ever since November my lovely "Radio Tower" internet has been misbehaving, dropping to speeds of 1 to 3 MB/s, and getting anything done about it has been a circus, to say the least. Roughly 10 days ago, it started to frequently lose connection as well, progressively worsening until 4 days ago we have no signal 99.9% of the time. Today they were to come out and "do things", but were thwarted by the heavy snow piled up in my yard and on my roof, so nothing happens until I get my yard cleared and both of our highly inflexible schedules intersect.
When it does kick on for a minute or so, Steam will start downloading something at blinding speeds of up to 50 Bits/s!
I think I can reliably hold on to my title for the foreseeable future.

Update and possible PSA. I've been reading lately about people having trouble connecting to Windows Update Service. Seems to be some mix of issues between a recent Windows update and certain ISP's DNS servers. Comcast and some media place in Britain being big ones. The work-around is to use Google's Public DNS servers. On a lark I gave that a shot; absolutely fixed my issue with zero internet. My speeds still vary more than I would like, but at least as good or maybe slightly better than they were back in November when things degraded.

No longer a thing to me but EPB just gave a free upgrade and price cut to their customers. 100 meg is now 300 meg and they cut the price of gig to $67.99 a month.

Re: World internet speeds
This isn't going to help Daehawk's peace of mind:
Google said Wednesday it forgot to mention that it included a microphone in its Nest Secure home alarm system, the latest privacy flub by one of the tech industry’s leading collectors of personal information.
The company said earlier this month that its voice assistant feature would be available on the system’s Nest Guard, which controls home alarm sensors.
But Google hadn’t told consumers about the device’s built-in microphone when it began selling the hubs in the fall of 2017. As recently as January , the product specs for the device made no mention of a microphone.
Google said in a statement that the omission was a mistake. “The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs,” it said.
The microphone hasn’t been active since launch, and people have to specifically enable it going forward, Google said. Business Insider first reported the microphone had been missing from the product’s description.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

10 gig? Holy moly. I don’t think my hard drive can write that fast. I’m around 500 mbps which is good for me however I think I have to upgrade my old router because it doesn’t seem to handle multiple wireless devices downloading large chunks of data. I got a bottleneck somewhere and it’s probably the router.Daehawk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 11:29 pm Heres a page with the place i cant get thanks to state gov

I put my deposit down for Starlink last year, was supposed to come here summer of 21, now it is summer of 22. And they just increased thier prices for the service and the hook-up. They are giving me a small discount, since they have had my money for a year without providing anything.
But my current ISP sucks, and they stopped talking to me, so I really have no alternative.

Im at 400/20 but come Nov i think it is I have to drop it to 100/4. My discount runs out and Charter is awful about giving you one while you have one or even extending it. They want you to lose it and go a few weeks before asking for another.

Bill Harris posted this link: Multigig fiber is too fast for your computer.
I'm sure it wouldn't be for your main PC from what I recall, but other devices won't be able to take advantage of it. I have a decent gaming router, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to upgrade if I went beyond a gig. Given that they haven't even announced faster speeds here yet, I'm not going to worry about it. I'm just going to enjoy what I have since it feels crazy fast.

I have enough down speed to get fast downloads while mutliple people stream in HD, but I really just want to get above the godawful Comcast upload speeds. A 30-minute video takes me over an hour to upload, and if I have several I usually just have to leave it running overnight.

My Xfinity plan right now is "up to 300mbps download". I'm only getting 200-225mbps or so. I'm annoyed but not enough to bother with their customer service, especially since I have my own modem, and that's going to be the first thing they harp on. In practical terms, it's not noticeable. I'm on a 12-month contract until next February - maybe I'll look for something else at that point (like T-Mobile 5G).

The Comcast 5mb upload cap is what really drove me to Centurylink after 18 years with Comcast.
I now get ~500/500, which is fine with me, at about 20% savings from Comcast.

Re: World internet speeds
I would get almost anything comparable over Comcast. The 300 down, 10 up is absurd, and with the unlimited data added in, it's more than it's worth. But the only alternative in the entire town is full wireless, which would give the entire family 50 down.
For the time being, I did some shopping at Comcast, and was able to upgrade to 900/20 with unlimited for a net -$20/month for the next year with no contract, so yeah - I took that. The upload speed still isn't great, but it will help when I need it, and it does open a few other options.
